This is a 1983 Harley Sporster 1000cc Ironhead motorcycle. It has 40,900 miles on it. It's really dependable. It has had regular maintenance since I bought it about 5 years ago. It just had its transmission rebuilt. The tank and front fender are custom. The rear fender is original and has some wear. The pipes are wrapped. I put drag bars on and took the back seat and windshield off. (Original bars/windshield/back seat included with sale, as well as the battery tender) It barely leaks oil. It is kept on a battery tender. And while it sits outside, it is always covered. the only real problems are that there is a short with the blinkers so they don't work at the moment (probably an easy fix) and the speedometer needle is broken off, but the odometer still works. I love this bike. It's really fun, and sounds great! I unfortunately don't have time to ride it at the moment. So I hope to find someone who loves him as much as I do.

1983 Harley Davidson XLH Sportster. The bike runs and rides good. Mostly original except for the air filter, rear shocks, and the paint is not original. The speedo doesn't work, but the odometer does. The bike starts right up and is ready to ride, just push the button and go. 1983 Harley Davidson XLH 1000 Sportster, Last Year of the Iron Head!! Here is a older bike. 1983, The last year of the Iron Head Sportster. This one runs and rides good, we did install a new "o" ring drive chain, and a new rear tire. It has what I think every iron head needs to run correctly, a Super "E" carb. on it. We have also done a full service to it, fresh oil & filter. We also replaced the gasket on the rear rocker box. As far as the looks, well, I would say it has a 10 foot paint job on it, It is a bit ugly. It is a bike that can be ridden until you decide how you want to make it look. The hard part is done, it runs, rides, and the charging system works correctly!! I have the mileage listed as 20868, that is what the aftermarket odometer shows, I do knot know the act. mileage on it. If you are looking for an Iron head that needs some cosmic loving, this one is worth a look!

MPG: 46mpg (period test) Price then/now: $6,995/$5,000-$12,000 Back in the early 1980s, Harley-Davidson executives were still a bit nervous about the viability of the company. After all, they were trying to sell old-fashioned pushrod, two-valve, air-cooled V-twin machines in an era of multis with double overhead camshafts, 4-valve heads and liquid cooling. Shortly after Harley bought itself back from AMF in 1981, the decision was made to junk the revolutionary Nova prototype AMF had been developing, which had a V-four engine incorporating all those contemporary innovations. However, something decidedly kick-*** was needed to convince the faithful that this 80-year-old company still had what it takes to whoop the upstarts, and it had to be done on the cheap. What to do? The new heads used slightly larger valves to allow for the increased 998cc displacement, and also offered better support for the valve guides, considering that this was intended to be a high-mile street bike, not a constantly rebuilt race bike. After basic machining in Milwaukee, the heads were all sent to flow-guru Jerry Branch s shop in California. Branch did the porting and polishing, shimmed the double valve springs, and put in titanium collars and keepers. None of this was cheap. One big difference between the iron XL and alloy XR heads was that the valves were set at an included angle of 90 degrees on the stock Sportster versus 68 degrees on the XR. This allowed for a shallower combustion chamber and a flattish-topped piston on the XR, which helped create a shorter route from the spark plug to the combustibles. Performance package Harley claimed 70hp at 5,600rpm, along with 48lb/ft of torque at 4,400rpm. That power traveled along a triplex primary chain to a multiplate wet clutch, through a 4-speed Sportster transmission and out to the back wheel on a 530 chain. By Clement Salvadori

This is 1983 Harley-Davidson Sportster XLH 1000 Ironhead was rebuilt in spring of 2014. It was converted into a "mild" hard-tail bobber with classic Army Air Core paint scheme.Original mileage is about of 38k, but the engine was rebuilt 316 miles ago.It has the standard factory four-speed transmission.It has an S&S Super E "Shorty" carburetor, properly jetted and tuned.It has a brand new chrome o-ring chain and primary drive sprocket. It has wide custom foot pegs and highway pegs.I've hard tailed it with 11 inch struts, but I will throw in the original shocks at no additional charge if the sprung solo seat is too hard on your tushy. The spring-mounted solo seat makes the hard-tail a little less hard-on-the-tail.It has a custom fabricated bobber-style side-mounted tail-light and license plate.Front and rear bake pads and rotors are in good shape with about 80% of the surface left on the pads and no major wear or grooves in the disks. This has dual front disk brakes for extra stopping power (very helpful if you commute in DC traffic like me).The tires have 80% of their tread.The battery is new and has a battery tender cable installed.This is a great commuter bike and bar hopper: I commute into DC from Alexandria on it several times a week and take it out on twist roads on the weekends. It has a "bikini" fairing, which actually does help a bit with wind resistance while rocketing down the HOV lane at 90MPH, laughing at the cagers stuck in bumper to bumper traffic in the slow lanes. The bike is registered in Virginia with a current safety inspection. The title is free and clear, in hand, and ready to be signed over. If you want to restore the bike to original, I have most of the necessary parts, and will be happy to give you a good deal on them.
