1980 Harley-Davidson FLH Shovelhead (FLH-80 Electra Glide II), The Shovelhead is an air-cooled, 45 degree, V-twin motorcycle engine manufactured from 1966 to 1985 by Harley-Davidson. Initial models had an engine displacement of 1,208 cc (74 cu in). Roughly halfway through production of the 1978 model year, this was increased to 1,340 cc (82 cu in) for some of Harley's Big Twin bikes. 1340cc, referred to by the company as 80ci., engines were optional on FLH models halfway through 1978 and through all of '79 before becoming standard equipment for FLH models in 1980. These bikes were referred to as FLH-80 Electra Glide II models. FX model bikes continued to be offered with either 1200 or 1340 cc engines till 1981 when 1340cc, also referred to as 80 ci., was made standard across the Big Twin line.Customized Shovelhead Electra GlideThe "shovel" cylinder head represented an offshoot of the Harley-Davidson Knucklehead engine but featured a slightly different look. The name was derived from the appearance of the rocker box covers. Because these covers bring to mind the head of coal shovels when inverted, the name shovelhead was a natural progression. The shovel engines powered Harleys up until the introduction of the Evolution engine in 1984, ending the reign of the "shovel" as enthusiasts frequently call these engines. The shovel engine does not have covers, per se, but rocker boxes and rocker arms which pivot on shafts. The design provided more than a unique look; it produced 10% more horsepower than the panhead engine which it replaced. From 1966 through 1969 the shovelhead kept the panhead style lower end. These early style shovelheads with the generator bottoms were often referred to as slabside shovels. From 1970 on the shovelheads used an alternator bottom often termed a cone shovel.

1984 FLH Electra Glide Shovelhead !! Matching Numbers Motorcycle !! This bike has factory final belt drive & primary separate from the motor oiler, also has factory electronic ignition & spin-on oil filter. This is a very rare bike as it was 1984. This was the year that you could buy a Shovel, an Evo, belt drive, chain drive, kick-start.....you name it Harley would sell it to you. Anyway this Shovelhead was about as advanced as the 4 speed Shovel ever got to be before she got phased out. This Harley classic has new tires, all balls starter, solenoid, battery, coil, spark plugs, plug wires & all three fluids have just been changed. This old girl is ready to ride this spring!! Normal wear & tear for a 31 yr/old motorcycle, but very presentable for the age! Has scrapes and chips that have been touched up, mostly on the hard-bag lids. The tank, fenders and fairing are VERY nice. The bag lids look like they may have flew off a time or two, which is quite common, but they are not cracked. Outer primary leaks a TINY amount of oil. Rear base & front head gaskets barely weep when running 50W, she is real tight running 60W so that is what I would suggest, especially in the warmer weather. People always mention how dry & oil drip free this bike is for a shovel. Runs, drives & shifts VERY nice!! Not sure how valid the mileage is, the speedo cable was broken when I got it but has since been repaired. This is a completely restored, correct and original 1973 Harley-Davidson FLH Shovelhead. This FLH has had a complete ground up/ frame off restoration. Mechanically better than new. Balanced-Blueprinted. Unleaded valve seats. This FLH was my personal bike when I owned the Harley dealership in Pueblo Colorado. No expense spared. Repair Order totaled $9,874. Copy of repair orders are available, listing all work completed and parts used. I am the 2nd owner. I bought in 1996 from the wife of the original owner who had died in 1984. This FLH has the Original Paint scheme for 1973. Less than 300 miles on bike since rebuild. Converted ignition from points to electronic ignition. Upgraded Outputs of Voltage Regulator and stator/charging system. All new primary chain/sprockets, drive chain and sprockets. Brakes rebuilt; all new fluid lines, cylinders & shoes. New wiring harness throughout. Converted exhaust to dual fishtails. Install Kick start assembly. Unleaded valve seats installed with new valves and tappets. Bendix (original) Carb rebuilt.
