It's received great reviews and quite a change over the 2009 model. A great change. Take a look at the photos for more details.Kevin Cameron had this to say: You wanna talk new? Okay, hows this? Except for the wheels, tires and an assortment of nuts and bolts, everything on the 2010 Honda CRF250R is all-new. Everything. The engine is a complete redesign, as are the frame and suspension, and even the bodywork is new. Not only that, this Lites-class Honda now is the first 250cc motocrosser to be fuel-injected rather than carbureted. And its not just another typical fuel injection; this is the most impressive system ever used on any MX bike. Its impressive for a couple of reasons. The EFI noticeably improves engine performance, which is a hugely important factor in a motocross class where power means so much more than it does on bigger bikes. The injection also functions flawlessly, never guilty of a single blubber, bog or hiccup as it shoots a sharp, crisp exhaust note out of the single muffler that replaces the previous models twin pipes. Further, the systems precise fuel metering gives the rider a greater sense of throttle-to-rear-wheel control. Perhaps best of all, Honda was able to make the switch from carburetor to fuel injection without increasing the bikes weight. Our test 250 tipped the scales at 217 pounds, exactly the same weight as the 2009 model, and it actually feels even lighter than the 09 when you ride it.Credit a more-focused program of mass centralization and a lower center of gravity. Honda did not accomplish this feat with radical designs, such as the backward engine on Yamahas new YZ450Falthough the CRF250R already utilizes the offset crankshaft design proudly boasted by Yamaha. Instead, Big Reds engineers made the 249cc Unicam engine even more compact than before. The engine is vertically shorter, achieved by means of a thinner piston crown, along with a relocated crankcase breather that allowed the crankshaft to be lowered in the cases by 10mm. The intake ports are now straighter, the bore and stroke were changed from 78.0 x 52.2mm in 09 to 76.8 x 53.8mm, and the compression ratio has gone up from 13.0:1 to 13.2:1.On the track, the 250Rs outright power seems about the same as that of last years bike. Jumps that require full-throttle acceleration off corners launch the new 250 as far as the previous one, and wide-open runs from corner to corner also are roughly equal. But the new bikes power can be deceiving; the fuel-injection system smoothes delivery so much that the abrupt, snappy power of the previous bike is history.This has an effect on the way you ride the new 250. On the carbureted model, you turned the throttle, usually wide-open, then waited for a fraction of a second for a big hit to show up; but on the injected bike, you get immediate results when you twist the grip, and the amount of power that arrives is pretty much proportional to how far you open the throttle. So, theres no need to be wide-open constantly like on the previous 250F; instead, you ride the new bike a lot like a 450, because it is more sensitive to throttle position and always ready to make power. Actually, even the 450s havent felt as good, engine-wise, since they generally have too much power for you to fully appreciateor even sensetruly spot-on fueling.In fact, all aspects of the CRFs performance are more sensitive to rider input. The new twin-spar aluminum frame is a mere 1mm narrower and 4mm lower, but revised steering geometry moves the front wheel 0.6-inch closer to the crank-shaft, while the wheelbase is claimed to be 0.6 inches longer. Triple-clamp offset was shortened from 22mm to 20mm, with rake and trail going from 27.9 degrees/4.9 inches to 27.3/4.6.All this makes for a sharper-handling bike that corners with more precision and accuracy. The only possible draw-back is the loss of some high-speed stability. The new bike is busier coming into bumpy corners off of a fast section, whereas the old bike tended to stay straighter and have less of a reaction to braking bumps. But I was able to dial out most or all of those headshakes by turning up the Honda Progressive Steering Damper (HPSD) a couple of clicks.Overall, it takes less effort to make the bike go where you want it to go than it did on the 09 model. As mentioned earlier, the new bike acts as though its even lighter than it is, and excellent front-to-rear balance gives it a very neutral feel. This makes it easier to change direction in midair, and the bike flicks side to side with less effort, allowing quicker directional changes when on the ground. But because the CRF is more sensitive and makes instantaneous reactions, its not as forgiving, so the rider has to be on his/her game more than before.Fortunately, improvements to the suspension help reduce the negative outcome of a riders poorly thought-out moves. Honda has stayed with Showa components at both ends but upped fork diameter from 47 to 48mm while retaining the 09 bikes 12.4 inches of travel. The shock, meanwhile, gets a larger piston and now delivers 12.6 inches of wheel travel (up from 12.4) as it works on a lighter swingarm and a redesigned Pro-Link linkage.This suspension package provides solid tracking out of corners with no kicking or packing. Both ends are more plush, so there is no real harshness when hitting sharp bumps or landing off skyscraper jumps. To suit my riding style, I opened up the shocks high-speed rebound one click and stiffened the forks compression by two clicks. At those settings, the suspension worked great for me, but it has enough adjustment range that it can accommodate riders of most styles, sizes and skill levels.And so can the engine. Despite being only a 250, the CRFs easy-to-start engine is actually more user-friendly than ever for less-experienced riders, thanks mostly to the fuel-injection system, yet it makes enough power to keep experts running up front. Thats the kind of flexibility that helps separate winners from also-rans.Whether or not the CRF250R proves to be the class of the class remains to be seen in a future comparison. But with this bike, Honda has proven that a 250cc four-stroke can be successfully fuel-injected without any loss of power, but also without gaining weight, all while making the CRF250R a better motocross racer than it already was.HondaS CRF250R goes digitalBetter riding through fuel injectionGetting carburetors to accurately deliver fuel in motocross has historically been quite difficult because of the challenging conditions. Bumps, jumps and zero gravity get float-bowl fuel sloshing around in such a way as to make it nearly impossible to guarantee predict-able engine response 100 percent of the time.Fuel injection changes this completely.Because the CRF250Rs PGM-FI system monitors throttle position, air and coolant temperatures, plus intake manifold pressure and rpm, its base performance is equivalent to attentive, accurate tuning by a carburetion expert. In addition, ignition timing is derived not from advancing or retarding the stator plate with little taps from your 2-ounce ball-peen hammer but from a stored internal electronic map. That means 1) a closer match of ignition timing to what the engine really needs; and 2) once you have the equipment for altering fuel and timing maps, you can change performance in specific areas of the engines powerband. This brings the tuning accuracy of MotoGP to motocross.I spoke with American Hondas Ray Conway about the new fuel system. The real question is, what does this new technology let us do? he began. Its not just the old bike plus fuel injection. This 250 has a bigger airbox, a smaller gas tankthis is an all-new motorcycle.Single-cylinder engines always need more airbox volume than there is room, and more accurate, more efficient fuel delivery allows the gas tank to shrink. The 76.8 x 53.8mm cylinder takes big gulps of airbig enough to pull air out of a too-small airbox faster than the boxs snorkel can make it up. Big is good.I also wanted to know what MX-specific performance advantages injection brings. For instance, how about the zero-gravity situation in midjump?The 2008 and 09 carbs on the 250 were good, but we fought a bog, said Conway. With a carburetor, a jump makes the fuel go one way and the bike the othereven with complicated float baffles and plastic jet hoods.Aside from not needing altitude and weather tuning and cold-starting so well, a real advantage is no springtime carb cleanout, he added. You just drain the old gas, fill up with fresh and go.The same 50mm throttle body serves both the 450 and 250, and the 250 injector nozzle is a 12-hole Keihin. Injection pressure is 50 psi. A larger AC generator provides the extra power needed by the system. Dual crank-position sensors identify the compression stroke and piston position.Okay, the system compensates for weather changes, but what if you want to tune in modified cam timing or a different compression ratio?Tuning uses the PGM-FI Setting Tool, Conway replied. Theres base data for mixture and ignition timing, and the kit lets you make changes using a (Windows) laptop. This isnt just for power; you can soften the power for a new rider or a slick track. This unit just arrived and below is a review from Dirt Rider magazine: Second in line for first new bike of 2009 is the KTM 450 SX-F. Once a fiercely hard-edged motocrosser, the new and improved KTM is showing a more refined compliance that should gain it some new track-addicted fans in 2009.Right away you know this KTM is different than last years bike. One look into its graphics, one stare at the factory-colored fork and one glance at the blacked-out triple clamps and youll see KTMs forward-thinking style is alive and well. But the beneficial changes dont stop with aesthetics.Clearly the most noticeable improvement and most obvious to the eye is the new front suspension components. The fork on the 2009 450 SX-F shares similar construction refinements with the 250 XC weve already tested. Thinner tubes, stiffer springs and new valving put the fork action in a different direction: a much softer one. Really, KTM engineers accomplished something directly in line with what American customers will appreciate: a more supple, friendlier ride aboard an orange bike. Surely, more riders will feel at home with the new plushness. While the combination of the flex character of the setup and overall softer damping makes fans from novice to intermediate, pro-level riders will need to stiffen up the front end to keep from getting stuck in the wallows. Same goes for the shock, which has its own upgrades.The linkageless shock out back on the 450 SX-F has an all-new PDS needle. This is the linkage in a dual-piston shock system. It acts similar to a carb needle in that upon compression, the amount of oil passing by the needle is reduced the farther the shock travels. When the needle closes off the bypass, the valving includes the secondary piston and the rate of damping force increases. The angle of the shock puts a certain amount of rising rate (like a linkage) on the shock, but the internal valving adds even more dimension to this.The result of all this fluid dynamic needle business is a great rear shock feel. Again, better than the 08 and more friendly to a wider range of riders. Were pretty sure the shock plushness has a lot to do with the improved front end feel, too. Also mirroring the front, the shock seems to be on the soft side for the fastest riders in our testing posse. Dial it in by stiffening it up, and dont forget to use rebound adjustments for traction control!Speaking of adjustments, the only really strange thing about KTMs suspension this year seems to be the sensitivity of the clickers. Our testers all felt the range of one click was huge. So huge that we were looking for half clicks. So click wisely. Or if you want to learn what things do, click recklessly and pay attention.Inside the KTMs renowned motor is some enhancement worth noting. The motor nicely packages more bottom-end than a year ago with the same great overrev and top-end superiority. Everyone is in love with this motor, and since theyve proven to have a solid track record in the durability department, were more than confident giving it a positive endorsement. Changes internally include a new, lighter weight piston which is at least partially responsible for getting the SX-F motor into the revs sooner. The valve train has some updates (lighter finger followers, new valve springs and slightly different timing) to enhance this rev-up further. Also new in the head are revised intake and exhaust ports that match the all-new intake and exhaust manifolds which bookend the top end. In a refinement year, youd think a suspension overhaul and major motor character enhancements would be enough. Especially since KTM has the control and style market more than cornered with its juice clutch, radical braking power and gnarly graphic treatments. But for 09, that game is stepped up, too.New levers and master cylinders for both the brake and clutch side make another nice addition. The clutch is now less-funky feeling with a normal sized lever, and the front brake system (which is all new down to the caliper) is smaller, lighter and easier to modulate. The braking power is still there, though, trust us. The clutch lever also features great position adjustability and boasts fold-away crash-damage resistance.Weve given this orange ride the First Test treatment over here at the Dirt Rider shop, for sure. Not only that, this Lites-class Honda now is the first 250cc motocrosser to be fuel-injected rather than carbureted. And its not just another typical fuel injection; this is the most impressive system ever used on any MX bike. Its impressive for a couple of reasons. The EFI noticeably improves engine performance, which is a hugely important factor in a motocross class where power means so much more than it does on bigger bikes. The injection also functions flawlessly, never guilty of a single blubber, bog or hiccup as it shoots a sharp, crisp exhaust note out of the single muffler that replaces the previous models twin pipes. Further, the systems precise fuel metering gives the rider a greater sense of throttle-to-rear-wheel control. Perhaps best of all, Honda was able to make the switch from carburetor to fuel injection without increasing the bikes weight. Our test 250 tipped the scales at 217 pounds, exactly the same weight as the 2009 model, and it actually feels even lighter than the 09 when you ride it.Credit a more-focused program of mass centralization and a lower center of gravity. Honda did not accomplish this feat with radical designs, such as the backward engine on Yamahas new YZ450Falthough the CRF250R already utilizes the offset crankshaft design proudly boasted by Yamaha. Instead, Big Reds engineers made the 249cc Unicam engine even more compact than before. The engine is vertically shorter, achieved by means of a thinner piston crown, along with a relocated crankcase breather that allowed the crankshaft to be lowered in the cases by 10mm. The intake ports are now straighter, the bore and stroke were changed from 78.0 x 52.2mm in 09 to 76.8 x 53.8mm, and the compression ratio has gone up from 13.0:1 to 13.2:1.On the track, the 250Rs outright power seems about the same as that of last years bike. Jumps that require full-throttle acceleration off corners launch the new 250 as far as the previous one, and wide-open runs from corner to corner also are roughly equal. But the new bikes power can be deceiving; the fuel-injection system smoothes delivery so much that the abrupt, snappy power of the previous bike is history.This has an effect on the way you ride the new 250. On the carbureted model, you turned the throttle, usually wide-open, then waited for a fraction of a second for a big hit to show up; but on the injected bike, you get immediate results when you twist the grip, and the amount of power that arrives is pretty much proportional to how far you open the throttle. So, theres no need to be wide-open constantly like on the previous 250F; instead, you ride the new bike a lot like a 450, because it is more sensitive to throttle position and always ready to make power. Actually, even the 450s havent felt as good, engine-wise, since they generally have too much power for you to fully appreciateor even sensetruly spot-on fueling.In fact, all aspects of the CRFs performance are more sensitive to rider input. The new twin-spar aluminum frame is a mere 1mm narrower and 4mm lower, but revised steering geometry moves the front wheel 0.6-inch closer to the crank-shaft, while the wheelbase is claimed to be 0.6 inches longer. Triple-clamp offset was shortened from 22mm to 20mm, with rake and trail going from 27.9 degrees/4.9 inches to 27.3/4.6.All this makes for a sharper-handling bike that corners with more precision and accuracy. The only possible draw-back is the loss of some high-speed stability. The new bike is busier coming into bumpy corners off of a fast section, whereas the old bike tended to stay straighter and have less of a reaction to braking bumps. But I was able to dial out most or all of those headshakes by turning up the Honda Progressive Steering Damper (HPSD) a couple of clicks.Overall, it takes less effort to make the bike go where you want it to go than it did on the 09 model. As mentioned earlier, the new bike acts as though its even lighter than it is, and excellent front-to-rear balance gives it a very neutral feel. This makes it easier to change direction in midair, and the bike flicks side to side with less effort, allowing quicker directional changes when on the ground. But because the CRF is more sensitive and makes instantaneous reactions, its not as forgiving, so the rider has to be on his/her game more than before.Fortunately, improvements to the suspension help reduce the negative outcome of a riders poorly thought-out moves. Honda has stayed with Showa components at both ends but upped fork diameter from 47 to 48mm while retaining the 09 bikes 12.4 inches of travel. The shock, meanwhile, gets a larger piston and now delivers 12.6 inches of wheel travel (up from 12.4) as it works on a lighter swingarm and a redesigned Pro-Link linkage.This suspension package provides solid tracking out of corners with no kicking or packing. Both ends are more plush, so there is no real harshness when hitting sharp bumps or landing off skyscraper jumps. To suit my riding style, I opened up the shocks high-speed rebound one click and stiffened the forks compression by two clicks. At those settings, the suspension worked great for me, but it has enough adjustment range that it can accommodate riders of most styles, sizes and skill levels.And so can the engine. Despite being only a 250, the CRFs easy-to-start engine is actually more user-friendly than ever for less-experienced riders, thanks mostly to the fuel-injection system, yet it makes enough power to keep experts running up front. Thats the kind of flexibility that helps separate winners from also-rans.Whether or not the CRF250R proves to be the class of the class remains to be seen in a future comparison. Bumps, jumps and zero gravity get float-bowl fuel sloshing around in such a way as to make it nearly impossible to guarantee predict-able engine response 100 percent of the time.Fuel injection changes this completely.Because the CRF250Rs PGM-FI system monitors throttle position, air and coolant temperatures, plus intake manifold pressure and rpm, its base performance is equivalent to attentive, accurate tuning by a carburetion expert. In addition, ignition timing is derived not from advancing or retarding the stator plate with little taps from your 2-ounce ball-peen hammer but from a stored internal electronic map. You are looking at a 2013 Husaberg FE 250 Enduro motorcycle, it has blinkers, and a brake light added so that it can be ridden on the street. It has a digital enduro timer and speedometer that can be reset to zero for the next competition, as a result we dont know how many miles it has on it. The previous owner said the oil was changed twice once at 25 hours and again at 50 hours. He estimates it to have about 60 hours on it. Husaberg is a top quality Austrian built competition bike. It has an upgraded Performance exhaust and a 35 hp four stroke high output motor. It has a few scrapes on the number plates, and the grips. It runs real strong with lots of power, I noticed the right fork seal is starting to leak. Look at the pictures and watch the video, give us a call with any questions. Below is a review written by dirt wheels magazine about this bike.An all-new model, this 250cc four-stroke was built for the competitive E1 race division and was designed to be as light and agile as possible. Like all Husabergs, the FE250 is set up for 100% enduro and features a high-revving DOHC engine with titanium valves that is claimed to produce 35 horsepower. As expected, this machine responds well at higher rpm ranges and likes to be shifted often. The bottom-to-mid range is slightly soft, yet it only takes a quick snap of the clutch to awaked a more lively side of the bike. Response is excellent and the electric starting is absolutely flawless. When it comes to handling, the lightweight feel of the bike is easy to notice on rapid direction changes where the weight is transferred smoothly and without any surprises. The all-new WP4S-closed cartridge forknot to be confused with a separate function forkfeatures a compression adjuster on the top left fork cap and a rebound adjuster on the right. The two are not connected in any way, and the hardware in each leg is identical, yet making small adjustments on each adjuster impacts the overall ride of the bike. Our experience was that minor changes to clicker settings resulted in minimal affects to the bike; you need to really tweak these clickers in order to make any progress on setup. The stock character of the fork is slightly soft initially with good bottoming resistance and smooth action. On the other end of the bike, the shock holds up well and wasnt overly busy or harsh. Except for the wheels, tires and an assortment of nuts and bolts, everything on the 2010 Honda CRF250R is all-new. Everything. The engine is a complete redesign, as are the frame and suspension, and even the bodywork is new. Not only that, this Lites-class Honda now is the first 250cc motocrosser to be fuel-injected rather than carbureted. And its not just another typical fuel injection; this is the most impressive system ever used on any MX bike. Its impressive for a couple of reasons. The EFI noticeably improves engine performance, which is a hugely important factor in a motocross class where power means so much more than it does on bigger bikes. The injection also functions flawlessly, never guilty of a single blubber, bog or hiccup as it shoots a sharp, crisp exhaust note out of the single muffler that replaces the previous models twin pipes. Further, the systems precise fuel metering gives the rider a greater sense of throttle-to-rear-wheel control. Perhaps best of all, Honda was able to make the switch from carburetor to fuel injection without increasing the bikes weight. Our test 250 tipped the scales at 217 pounds, exactly the same weight as the 2009 model, and it actually feels even lighter than the 09 when you ride it.Credit a more-focused program of mass centralization and a lower center of gravity. Honda did not accomplish this feat with radical designs, such as the backward engine on Yamahas new YZ450Falthough the CRF250R already utilizes the offset crankshaft design proudly boasted by Yamaha. Instead, Big Reds engineers made the 249cc Unicam engine even more compact than before. The engine is vertically shorter, achieved by means of a thinner piston crown, along with a relocated crankcase breather that allowed the crankshaft to be lowered in the cases by 10mm. The intake ports are now straighter, the bore and stroke were changed from 78.0 x 52.2mm in 09 to 76.8 x 53.8mm, and the compression ratio has gone up from 13.0:1 to 13.2:1.On the track, the 250Rs outright power seems about the same as that of last years bike. Jumps that require full-throttle acceleration off corners launch the new 250 as far as the previous one, and wide-open runs from corner to corner also are roughly equal. But the new bikes power can be deceiving; the fuel-injection system smoothes delivery so much that the abrupt, snappy power of the previous bike is history.This has an effect on the way you ride the new 250. On the carbureted model, you turned the throttle, usually wide-open, then waited for a fraction of a second for a big hit to show up; but on the injected bike, you get immediate results when you twist the grip, and the amount of power that arrives is pretty much proportional to how far you open the throttle. So, theres no need to be wide-open constantly like on the previous 250F; instead, you ride the new bike a lot like a 450, because it is more sensitive to throttle position and always ready to make power. Actually, even the 450s havent felt as good, engine-wise, since they generally have too much power for you to fully appreciateor even sensetruly spot-on fueling.In fact, all aspects of the CRFs performance are more sensitive to rider input. The new twin-spar aluminum frame is a mere 1mm narrower and 4mm lower, but revised steering geometry moves the front wheel 0.6-inch closer to the crank-shaft, while the wheelbase is claimed to be 0.6 inches longer. Triple-clamp offset was shortened from 22mm to 20mm, with rake and trail going from 27.9 degrees/4.9 inches to 27.3/4.6.All this makes for a sharper-handling bike that corners with more precision and accuracy. The only possible draw-back is the loss of some high-speed stability. The new bike is busier coming into bumpy corners off of a fast section, whereas the old bike tended to stay straighter and have less of a reaction to braking bumps. But I was able to dial out most or all of those headshakes by turning up the Honda Progressive Steering Damper (HPSD) a couple of clicks.Overall, it takes less effort to make the bike go where you want it to go than it did on the 09 model. As mentioned earlier, the new bike acts as though its even lighter than it is, and excellent front-to-rear balance gives it a very neutral feel. This makes it easier to change direction in midair, and the bike flicks side to side with less effort, allowing quicker directional changes when on the ground. But because the CRF is more sensitive and makes instantaneous reactions, its not as forgiving, so the rider has to be on his/her game more than before.Fortunately, improvements to the suspension help reduce the negative outcome of a riders poorly thought-out moves. Honda has stayed with Showa components at both ends but upped fork diameter from 47 to 48mm while retaining the 09 bikes 12.4 inches of travel. The shock, meanwhile, gets a larger piston and now delivers 12.6 inches of wheel travel (up from 12.4) as it works on a lighter swingarm and a redesigned Pro-Link linkage.This suspension package provides solid tracking out of corners with no kicking or packing. Both ends are more plush, so there is no real harshness when hitting sharp bumps or landing off skyscraper jumps. To suit my riding style, I opened up the shocks high-speed rebound one click and stiffened the forks compression by two clicks. At those settings, the suspension worked great for me, but it has enough adjustment range that it can accommodate riders of most styles, sizes and skill levels.And so can the engine. Despite being only a 250, the CRFs easy-to-start engine is actually more user-friendly than ever for less-experienced riders, thanks mostly to the fuel-injection system, yet it makes enough power to keep experts running up front. Thats the kind of flexibility that helps separate winners from also-rans.Whether or not the CRF250R proves to be the class of the class remains to be seen in a future comparison. But with this bike, Honda has proven that a 250cc four-stroke can be successfully fuel-injected without any loss of power, but also without gaining weight, all while making the CRF250R a better motocross racer than it already was.HondaS CRF250R goes digitalBetter riding through fuel injectionGetting carburetors to accurately deliver fuel in motocross has historically been quite difficult because of the challenging conditions. Bumps, jumps and zero gravity get float-bowl fuel sloshing around in such a way as to make it nearly impossible to guarantee predict-able engine response 100 percent of the time.Fuel injection changes this completely.Because the CRF250Rs PGM-FI system monitors throttle position, air and coolant temperatures, plus intake manifold pressure and rpm, its base performance is equivalent to attentive, accurate tuning by a carburetion expert. In addition, ignition timing is derived not from advancing or retarding the stator plate with little taps from your 2-ounce ball-peen hammer but from a stored internal electronic map. That means 1) a closer match of ignition timing to what the engine really needs; and 2) once you have the equipment for altering fuel and timing maps, you can change performance in specific areas of the engines powerband. This brings the tuning accuracy of MotoGP to motocross.I spoke with American Hondas Ray Conway about the new fuel system. The real question is, what does this new technology let us do? he began. Its not just the old bike plus fuel injection. This 250 has a bigger airbox, a smaller gas tankthis is an all-new motorcycle.Single-cylinder engines always need more airbox volume than there is room, and more accurate, more efficient fuel delivery allows the gas tank to shrink. You just drain the old gas, fill up with fresh and go.The same 50mm throttle body serves both the 450 and 250, and the 250 injector nozzle is a 12-hole Keihin. Injection pressure is 50 psi. A larger AC generator provides the extra power needed by the system. Dual crank-position sensors identify the compression stroke and piston position.Okay, the system compensates for weather changes, but what if you want to tune in modified cam timing or a different compression ratio?Tuning uses the PGM-FI Setting Tool, Conway replied. This unit just arrived and below is a review from Dirt Rider magazine: Second in line for first new bike of 2009 is the KTM 450 SX-F. Once a fiercely hard-edged motocrosser, the new and improved KTM is showing a more refined compliance that should gain it some new track-addicted fans in 2009.Right away you know this KTM is different than last years bike. One look into its graphics, one stare at the factory-colored fork and one glance at the blacked-out triple clamps and youll see KTMs forward-thinking style is alive and well. But the beneficial changes dont stop with aesthetics.Clearly the most noticeable improvement and most obvious to the eye is the new front suspension components. The fork on the 2009 450 SX-F shares similar construction refinements with the 250 XC weve already tested. Thinner tubes, stiffer springs and new valving put the fork action in a different direction: a much softer one. Really, KTM engineers accomplished something directly in line with what American customers will appreciate: a more supple, friendlier ride aboard an orange bike. Surely, more riders will feel at home with the new plushness. While the combination of the flex character of the setup and overall softer damping makes fans from novice to intermediate, pro-level riders will need to stiffen up the front end to keep from getting stuck in the wallows. Same goes for the shock, which has its own upgrades.The linkageless shock out back on the 450 SX-F has an all-new PDS needle. This is the linkage in a dual-piston shock system. It acts similar to a carb needle in that upon compression, the amount of oil passing by the needle is reduced the farther the shock travels. When the needle closes off the bypass, the valving includes the secondary piston and the rate of damping force increases. The angle of the shock puts a certain amount of rising rate (like a linkage) on the shock, but the internal valving adds even more dimension to this.The result of all this fluid dynamic needle business is a great rear shock feel. Again, better than the 08 and more friendly to a wider range of riders. Were pretty sure the shock plushness has a lot to do with the improved front end feel, too. Also mirroring the front, the shock seems to be on the soft side for the fastest riders in our testing posse. Dial it in by stiffening it up, and dont forget to use rebound adjustments for traction control!Speaking of adjustments, the only really strange thing about KTMs suspension this year seems to be the sensitivity of the clickers. Our testers all felt the range of one click was huge. So huge that we were looking for half clicks. So click wisely. Or if you want to learn what things do, click recklessly and pay attention.Inside the KTMs renowned motor is some enhancement worth noting. The motor nicely packages more bottom-end than a year ago with the same great overrev and top-end superiority. Everyone is in love with this motor, and since theyve proven to have a solid track record in the durability department, were more than confident giving it a positive endorsement. Changes internally include a new, lighter weight piston which is at least partially responsible for getting the SX-F motor into the revs sooner. The valve train has some updates (lighter finger followers, new valve springs and slightly different timing) to enhance this rev-up further. Also new in the head are revised intake and exhaust ports that match the all-new intake and exhaust manifolds which bookend the top end. In a refinement year, youd think a suspension overhaul and major motor character enhancements would be enough. Especially since KTM has the control and style market more than cornered with its juice clutch, radical braking power and gnarly graphic treatments. But for 09, that game is stepped up, too.New levers and master cylinders for both the brake and clutch side make another nice addition. The clutch is now less-funky feeling with a normal sized lever, and the front brake system (which is all new down to the caliper) is smaller, lighter and easier to modulate. The braking power is still there, though, trust us. Except for the wheels, tires and an assortment of nuts and bolts, everything on the 2010 Honda CRF250R is all-new. Everything. The engine is a complete redesign, as are the frame and suspension, and even the bodywork is new. Not only that, this Lites-class Honda now is the first 250cc motocrosser to be fuel-injected rather than carbureted. And its not just another typical fuel injection; this is the most impressive system ever used on any MX bike. Its impressive for a couple of reasons. The EFI noticeably improves engine performance, which is a hugely important factor in a motocross class where power means so much more than it does on bigger bikes. The injection also functions flawlessly, never guilty of a single blubber, bog or hiccup as it shoots a sharp, crisp exhaust note out of the single muffler that replaces the previous models twin pipes. Further, the systems precise fuel metering gives the rider a greater sense of throttle-to-rear-wheel control. Perhaps best of all, Honda was able to make the switch from carburetor to fuel injection without increasing the bikes weight. Our test 250 tipped the scales at 217 pounds, exactly the same weight as the 2009 model, and it actually feels even lighter than the 09 when you ride it.Credit a more-focused program of mass centralization and a lower center of gravity. Honda did not accomplish this feat with radical designs, such as the backward engine on Yamahas new YZ450Falthough the CRF250R already utilizes the offset crankshaft design proudly boasted by Yamaha. Instead, Big Reds engineers made the 249cc Unicam engine even more compact than before. The engine is vertically shorter, achieved by means of a thinner piston crown, along with a relocated crankcase breather that allowed the crankshaft to be lowered in the cases by 10mm. The intake ports are now straighter, the bore and stroke were changed from 78.0 x 52.2mm in 09 to 76.8 x 53.8mm, and the compression ratio has gone up from 13.0:1 to 13.2:1.On the track, the 250Rs outright power seems about the same as that of last years bike. Jumps that require full-throttle acceleration off corners launch the new 250 as far as the previous one, and wide-open runs from corner to corner also are roughly equal. But the new bikes power can be deceiving; the fuel-injection system smoothes delivery so much that the abrupt, snappy power of the previous bike is history.This has an effect on the way you ride the new 250. On the carbureted model, you turned the throttle, usually wide-open, then waited for a fraction of a second for a big hit to show up; but on the injected bike, you get immediate results when you twist the grip, and the amount of power that arrives is pretty much proportional to how far you open the throttle. So, theres no need to be wide-open constantly like on the previous 250F; instead, you ride the new bike a lot like a 450, because it is more sensitive to throttle position and always ready to make power. Actually, even the 450s havent felt as good, engine-wise, since they generally have too much power for you to fully appreciateor even sensetruly spot-on fueling.In fact, all aspects of the CRFs performance are more sensitive to rider input. The new twin-spar aluminum frame is a mere 1mm narrower and 4mm lower, but revised steering geometry moves the front wheel 0.6-inch closer to the crank-shaft, while the wheelbase is claimed to be 0.6 inches longer. Triple-clamp offset was shortened from 22mm to 20mm, with rake and trail going from 27.9 degrees/4.9 inches to 27.3/4.6.All this makes for a sharper-handling bike that corners with more precision and accuracy. The only possible draw-back is the loss of some high-speed stability. The new bike is busier coming into bumpy corners off of a fast section, whereas the old bike tended to stay straighter and have less of a reaction to braking bumps. But I was able to dial out most or all of those headshakes by turning up the Honda Progressive Steering Damper (HPSD) a couple of clicks.Overall, it takes less effort to make the bike go where you want it to go than it did on the 09 model. As mentioned earlier, the new bike acts as though its even lighter than it is, and excellent front-to-rear balance gives it a very neutral feel. This makes it easier to change direction in midair, and the bike flicks side to side with less effort, allowing quicker directional changes when on the ground. But because the CRF is more sensitive and makes instantaneous reactions, its not as forgiving, so the rider has to be on his/her game more than before.Fortunately, improvements to the suspension help reduce the negative outcome of a riders poorly thought-out moves. Honda has stayed with Showa components at both ends but upped fork diameter from 47 to 48mm while retaining the 09 bikes 12.4 inches of travel. The shock, meanwhile, gets a larger piston and now delivers 12.6 inches of wheel travel (up from 12.4) as it works on a lighter swingarm and a redesigned Pro-Link linkage.This suspension package provides solid tracking out of corners with no kicking or packing. Both ends are more plush, so there is no real harshness when hitting sharp bumps or landing off skyscraper jumps. To suit my riding style, I opened up the shocks high-speed rebound one click and stiffened the forks compression by two clicks. At those settings, the suspension worked great for me, but it has enough adjustment range that it can accommodate riders of most styles, sizes and skill levels.And so can the engine. Despite being only a 250, the CRFs easy-to-start engine is actually more user-friendly than ever for less-experienced riders, thanks mostly to the fuel-injection system, yet it makes enough power to keep experts running up front. Thats the kind of flexibility that helps separate winners from also-rans.Whether or not the CRF250R proves to be the class of the class remains to be seen in a future comparison. But with this bike, Honda has proven that a 250cc four-stroke can be successfully fuel-injected without any loss of power, but also without gaining weight, all while making the CRF250R a better motocross racer than it already was.HondaS CRF250R goes digitalBetter riding through fuel injectionGetting carburetors to accurately deliver fuel in motocross has historically been quite difficult because of the challenging conditions. Bumps, jumps and zero gravity get float-bowl fuel sloshing around in such a way as to make it nearly impossible to guarantee predict-able engine response 100 percent of the time.Fuel injection changes this completely.Because the CRF250Rs PGM-FI system monitors throttle position, air and coolant temperatures, plus intake manifold pressure and rpm, its base performance is equivalent to attentive, accurate tuning by a carburetion expert. In addition, ignition timing is derived not from advancing or retarding the stator plate with little taps from your 2-ounce ball-peen hammer but from a stored internal electronic map. That means 1) a closer match of ignition timing to what the engine really needs; and 2) once you have the equipment for altering fuel and timing maps, you can change performance in specific areas of the engines powerband. This brings the tuning accuracy of MotoGP to motocross.I spoke with American Hondas Ray Conway about the new fuel system. The real question is, what does this new technology let us do? he began. Its not just the old bike plus fuel injection. This 250 has a bigger airbox, a smaller gas tankthis is an all-new motorcycle.Single-cylinder engines always need more airbox volume than there is room, and more accurate, more efficient fuel delivery allows the gas tank to shrink. The 76.8 x 53.8mm cylinder takes big gulps of airbig enough to pull air out of a too-small airbox faster than the boxs snorkel can make it up. Big is good.I also wanted to know what MX-specific performance advantages injection brings. For instance, how about the zero-gravity situation in midjump?The 2008 and 09 carbs on the 250 were good, but we fought a bog, said Conway. A larger AC generator provides the extra power needed by the system. This is the newest 2008 Suzuki Rm 250 that is for sale, the only way to find one any better would be to find one still in the crate. The thing that surprised me the most about the bike isnt the fact that the RMZ motor rips with plenty of low-end (I expected that from a Suzuki engine), but the fact that top end is endless. The bike puts out a lot of power which allows you not to shift after a mid-range push. The amount of power delivered ends up boosting the bike long and strong until the rev-limiter is reached. You would see it as an easy goal but I guarantee you that reaching the rev-limiter will become your biggest challenge in your first days on the RMZ250. The engine is that amazing!The improved version of the chassis created by Kawasaki can be found on the new Suzuki RM-Z250. Nice was the fact that the aluminum frame seems to retail traditional Suzuki cornering characteristics if set properly. The bike turns awesome but with the alloy frame, it becomes much more sensitive in getting ample grip on the front Dunlop tire.The suspensions are tuned for maximum performance and it shows on the bumps as the bike tends maintain the rhythm imposed by the rider in comfort and stability which is a very important aspect when after a big, long jump a tight corner expects you.But preparing for tight corners involves powerful braking which means that the bike is suppose to feature strong brakes but which can be maneuvered carefully in order to further lean the bike as the corner starts giving you a great rush of adrenaline, found only on such machines. Do the hydraulic front and rear discs their job? Of course they do!The 2008 Suzuki RM-Z250 is a very well engineered motorcycle, with a great powerful motor, especially designed aluminum frame which makes it handle like a dream, and with powerful disc brakes for great stopping power.
