This bike has just over 15,000 ( fifteen thousand ) original miles on her. This is barely ridden in / broken in for a BMW :) All of the miles on this bike were put on it by me. And only by riding on paved good condition canyons / roads and in good condition weather ( no off road, and no dirt use ). The bike was purchased for use on the paved canyons and roads of the Rocky Mountains ( which are right outside my back door....literally :) .......so this bike is considered a very low mileage example for her age. [please see photos] OVERVIEW: The last single-cylinder shaft-drive BMW motorcycle ever made was the relatively powerful and elegant R27, a 250cc OHV vertical single with the only rubber-mounted thumper engine BMW ever produced. The engine pumped out 18 horsepower, the highest ever for a shaft-drive BMW single. BMW manufactured 15,364 R27s over the production years of 1960 through 1966 (some of the 1966 R27s were sold as 1967 models). The vast majority of R27 motorcycles exported to the United States by BMW were black with white pinstriping. BMW never did run with the crowd and always struck out on its own path. This is evident in its R27. Its enclosed shaft final drive is extremely rare for a thumper, of course. But it also had a triangulated Earles (named after English designer Ernest Earles) front fork; so the motorcycle had a front swingarm as well as a rear swingarm. When you squeezed the front brake lever hard not only did the front end not dive, it actually rose slightly. Thus, braking was a very steady activity, though the brakes were weak by today’s standards. The R27 engine’s crankshaft was laid out fore-to-aft, not side- to-side; also a rare feature. This way, the crank and the final shaft were in line, and drive forces did not have to be run through a set of 90-degree gears. On my last road trip to Denver (July 2015) on I-25 North of Las Vegas, NM, a piece of cardboard blew onto the highway, striking the upper left side of the windshield, scratching it & damaging the attachment hardware that raises & lowers the electric adjustable windshield. Cost to replace hardware (per Denver BMW) and a new V Stream windshield will be $800. Thus, the asking price has been reduced accordingly. Have not replaced windshield... as I thought new owner might wish to install something other than a V Stream. Other than the damage described above the bike is in fantastic condition, minus a few bruises here & there, which are virtually imperceptible, as evidenced by the attached photos. Everything works except the heated grips, which have not been replaced because I live in Phoenix, AZ. Last road trip: Show Low, AZ to Denver, CO and return in July 2015. (1,600 miles) averaged 51 mpg, utilizing Cruise Control 90% of the time.
