During the 1930s BSA concentrated on producing a range of dependable, well-made, competitively priced motorcycles. The firm’s single-cylinder range was re-designed by Val Page for 1937, the engines taking on many of the characteristics they would retain in the post-war era, most notably dry-sump lubrication, rear-mounted magneto and that distinctively shaped timing cover. There were four new offerings in the 350 class: the sidevalve B23 and a trio of overhead-valve models comprising the B24 Empire Star, the B26 Sports and the B25 Competition model that came equipped for trials use. For 1939 the overhead-valve 350s (either single- or twin-port) were renamed Silver Star. These B-series models lasted until the wholesale revision of the range for 1940, which saw all of them dropped, thus making the Silver Star one of the rarer of 1930s BSAs. The beautiful 1939 Silver Star offered here is a prime example of these bikes. Its details are well illustrated by the many close-up photographs. We cranked and rode the bike upon delivery to us. It started with no difficulty, ran well, shifted through the gears, and operated as we expected. The bike is located in Tallassee, AL 36078. All delivery expense to be paid by buyer. Many manufacturers had traveled down the scrambler-style street-oriented route before Honda, including BSA and Triumph. None of them, though, were as successful as Honda and their CL350 model, and according to Honda restoration guru Charlie O?Hanlon, none of them have the same cachet. They were built to be ridden, they were built to be reliable, and they were built for people to have fun on them. Honda broke open the American market for small, rider-friendly motorcycles in 1959 when they established their import business in LA. Prior to Honda, many of the motorcycles being ridden on the streets and in the dirt in the U.S. were heavy American-built V-twins. Lighter British iron was more sporting, but still featured relatively crude production qualities.

BIGGER IS BETTER (back Ground) The MOV was doing so well that a larger version was needed & by lengthening the stroke, they created the 350cc Velocette MAC in 1934. It became the real bread winner for Velocette Motorcycles, their best-selling model. The much-needed capital was invested in an entirely new design, a big 500cc OHV single sport version to be called the MSS in 1935. This utilized an all-new frame, developed from the MkV KTT race machines & shared this frame with the KSS MkII, 1936-48. The MSS was another runaway hit for Velocette Motorcycles. World War II halted production which did not resume until much later. The 1935 MSS was a much more modern machine with the same frame as the Velocette MAC and was fitted with sidecar lugs and had optional panniers to appeal to the touring market. Buyers started tuning the MSS for speed, however, and the factory responded by producing the sports Velocette Venom model. Burt Monro from New Zealand, featured in the film "The World’s Fastest Indian" chose a 1936 MSS 500cc raced a heavily modified Velocette MSS. Racing preparations including making special pistons, changing the frame and increasing bored out engine capacity to 650cc. His top speed record on this motorcycle was 138 mph. with a 1/4 mile time of 12.31 seconds. This fine example is reported to be an excellent runner and fun to ride. A little History on Harry Hindall: Harry HindallHarry Hindall was a motorcycle frame builder, aerospace engineer, and a desert racer From England who learned his welding skills working from some of the best; Don and Derrick Rickman. A new job brought him to SoCal. where he worked for Northrop in L.A. area, and until the layoffs of the 70’s would work as an engineer. While in SoCal he became a desert racer in District 37 AMA. Others noticed his specially built Triumph Twin in his home built frame, and they asked to ride it.After that he had friends wanting frames built for their bikes as well. When he was layed off for a few years, he ramped up his production of hand built one-of-a-kinds’s to make frames for D & RT1’s, Suzuki’s 250/400, Kawasaki 350 Bighorns, BSA and Triumph Twins and Singles. His final design was a TT500 Yamaha. Most 2-stroke bikes were about 30 lbs lighter when done, and the Twins sometimes up to 60 lbs lighter! He also made his own plastic Rickman style tanks (in Red) and seat combos.You would custom order your frame telling him what forks and wheels you were going to use. He also sold lightweight hollow axles and swing arm bolts, as well as Adel clamps that were used to mount most anything to his frames without welding. Frames sold finished were all nickel plated, unfinished w/o motor mounts, and would come bare metal. Less than 75 total frames were built, and no real records were kept. But if you look at the bikes VIN’s they are very different. Both of these bikes end in #72. Made in 1972 maybe? Both bikes had the then new state of the art conical 1972 Yamaha front wheels on them. Maybe a clue… I believe the VIN is nothing more than a manufactures date, and nothing more. I have seen two bikes with big horn motors and the #71 as the last numbers also. This is an original Harry Hindall DT1 250 still the original nikel plating in the frame in excellent condition! this bike runs great! has the Akront shouldered rims, DT1 tank, Hindall seat, Motocross style bars (solid) Really nice rare bike! if you google Hary Hindall you will see several of his bikes that sold, another DT1 250 sold for $15000.00 you can have this one for less. Can crate and ship in the continental US , and can crate for overseas Shipping also .I will not ship overseas though. there is no title on this off road bike
