APPEARANCE Originally introduced in 1938, Harley-Davidson's UL Sport Solo line ran the gamut from broad-shouldered cruiser all the way to commercial utility bike. Lovingly restored, and kept on permanent display, this lust-worthy UL hasn't logged any miles since the last wrench was turned on its NOS Harley hardware. A mirror-like coat of black paint serves as the foundation for era-correct scallops that are detailed with red pin striping. At the front of that pigment, the dark vibes start with an NOS Harley fender, which parades NOS Harley trim and an NOS Harley light in front of a correct fuel tank. Simple and classically shaped, that attractive tank, equipped with a factory dash, breaks perfectly in to an NOS buddy seat that's propped on NOS buddy springs. That saddle hangs over a second NOS Harley fender that centers an NOS tombstone taillight behind an NOS Harley bumper. And overall, this UL features classy, retro-cool aesthetics that are sure to age just as well as their high quality components allow. ACCESSORIES Restored to mix timeless visuals with a roster of components that was tirelessly hoarded over many years, this HOG is a virtual Case Study in authenticity. Up front, a correct Springer fork rides between an NOS Beck headlamp, NOS Harley handlebars, NOS Beck throttle grips and a polished brake handle that controls a correct brake system. Behind those bars, NOS Harley pegs, NOS Harley running boards and NOS Harley mats let the rider kick back, stretch his or her legs and chase the sun. Beneath those components, NOS Harley exhaust hangs a finned tip behind NOS Harley slinky covers. CHASSIS By the late '40s Harley had successfully recovered from the Great Depression and kick started civilian production on the coat tails of World War II. The 1948 model year would be the last to use the Springer fork, but little else changed when it came to the bike's foundation. And, naturally, this UL has been fully rebuilt to era-correct status all the way down to its NOS shock absorber. That stiff suspension is great at ensuring the rider gets an authentic feel for the road. There's an NOS Harley electrical system that works well with an NOS Harley accessory carb choke. And everything rolls on NOS Harley rims, which twist NOS Beck tires around NOS hubs and NOS cadmium spokes. DRIVETRAIN After almost two decades of manufacture, Harley had tweaked their flathead engines into well-tuned running gear. That said; 1948 would be the last year of the Big Twin UL, as it and the brand's wildly popular 'Knucklehead' were replaced by an upgraded V-Twin that would eventually earn the nickname 'Panhead'. That means this bike's original, 74 cubic inch flathead was an interesting rarity even in its heyday. Naturally, that VIN-matched powerplant is outfitted with an array of NOS components, including aluminum motor heads and old school primary covers. Electricity still takes the shape of a 6-volt system, which is augmented with a vintage-look gel cell battery. And behind that zero-mile motor, a correct Harley 4-speed processes commands from an NOS Beck gearshift knob. Like virtually all hard working, blue collar car guys, Jim respected Earnhardt's talent, virtues and will to succeed. And, after spending significant time piloting his own open-wheel modified, he especially admired Dale's tenacity and skill. In 1998, Jim was present as The Intimidator clenched his milestone Daytona 500 victory. In 2001, he shared the heartbreak of NASCAR losing its biggest and brightest star. And, in 2004, when his wife mentioned the long-planned tribute, he began assembling this award winning, 1 of 1 chopper. While most professional motorcycles are standardized, mass-produced packages that lack the intensity and attention to detail of grassroots art, true customs maintain a level of style and authenticity that can be tweaked and massaged to create an individual masterpiece. The product of a five month build, this awesome 'Performance Barn' chopper features traditionally sculpted sheetmetal that's bathed in a familiar House of Kolor basecoat. When that clean pigment dried, a dynamic theme of success, family and gratitude was ignited at its forks, fueled through its tank and sealed on its fender by high quality PPG clear. And that rugged sheen reflects a glossy, wet-look shine that, thanks to skilled work by Ed Head Graphics of Des Moines, Iowa, makes people stop, turn and stare! On the surface, this show stopping chopper is an incredible tribute to one tough customer. In practice, it's Jim's way of saying thanks to many respected peers, as every piece of the bike's world class hardware was hand selected based on character and merit. Up front, a Perse Performance fork centers a Paul Yaffe fender between an Arlen Ness headlight, a 21-inch Carriage Works wheel and an MH90-21 Avon Venom X tire. At the side of that wheel, a high quality Performance Machine brake system utilizes braided Goodridge lines to squeeze a polished, dual-piston caliper around a giant, drilled rotor. Above that caliper, chrome Paul Yaffe handle bars hang stylish Arlen Ness mirrors in front of slick Performance Machine Renthals. Behind those grips, the bike's smooth, Softail frame cradles a highly detailed RevTech V-twin that mixes a polished casing with a classic, instantly recognizable sound. I mean, you can always go out and find some pieced together beater that was built by the president of the local Jesse James fan club. Or you can walk into our showroom and fire up this slick 2005 P.B. Choppers Hardlife, which features a proven S&S V-twin, a modern 6-speed, stunning House of Kolor paint and a roster of accessories that were planned, placed and assembled by a credible, professional builder. With its exceptional attention to detail and great fit and finish, this super clean two wheeler provides the kind of comfort and ease of ownership that's only available from one of America's premier motorcycle artists. And, with that in mind, the crew's clean welds certainly aren't the only thing that catches your eye. This Hardlife's sculpted PBC tank and fenders showcase a slick coat of House of Kolor Black Cherry two-stage that demands serious attention. That timeless pigment is executed across clean, modern lines which provide a sophisticated, world class appearance. And that sophisticated appearance lends perfect credence to the saying 'custom choppers are the street rods of the motorcycle world'. Chock full of carefully spec'd components that promote higher levels of performance and significantly increase its all-important 'WOW' factor, this gnarly two wheeler is built with the same no-expense-spared, best-of-everything approach that's the cornerstone of all great 'custom Harley' projects. At the front of the bike, a Perse Performance fork hangs a fantastic Arlen Ness headlight above a polished, 21-inch Xtreme Machine wheel and MH90-21 Avon Venom-X tire. At the side of that wheel, a high quality Hawg Halters brake system squeezes a polished, dual-piston caliper around a giant, drilled rotor. Above that caliper, chrome PBC handle bars hang stylish Paul Yaffe Originals mirrors in front of slick Arlen Ness hand controls. Behind those controls, the bike's smooth, hard tail frame cradles a highly detailed S&S V-twin that mixes a polished casing with a classic, instantly recognizable sound. At the back of that engine, an Independent outer primary hangs a full set of Independent pegs in front of a ProFab Metal Werks tail light. Above that tail light, a sinuous fuel tank anchors a wide PBC seat in front of a bobbed rear fender. And below that fender, a second Hawg Halter disc hovers next to a 300/35R18 Avon Venom R that spins around a second Xtreme Machine wheel. The heart of this awesome creation is a 96 cubic inch S&S V-twin that utilizes Crane Hi-4 ignition, CNC-ported heads, forged rocker arms, a full set of stainless valves and forged flat top pistons to create gobs of reliable power. Founded in 1958, S&S Cycles is one of the biggest and most trusted motorcycle motivators in the world, and this chopper's fully sorted mill performs every bit as good as it looks! At the top of the highly polished block, a stylish PBC coil cover splits the difference between traditional chrome rocker boxes. On the right side of the frame, a familiar S&S Shorty slurps wind through a custom Arlen Ness air cleaner. Below that carb, chrome rod covers lead the eye to polished Grumpy's Customs pipes, a compact Independent oil tank and a standard S&S cam cover. That top notch hardware rolls on a rigid PBC hard tail frame, which mixes a 6-inch stretch with a 40 degree rake. And the V-twin's power flows through a show-polished Baker 6-speed that provides solid shifts and reliable cruising.
