This one fits that category quite easily. The first thing I will tell you is that I am no expert on Honda motorcycles. So if there is a question or concern that I haven't addressed please don't hesitate to call or email. I will tell you what I can see and what I know about the bike and if you know your way around them and have a question, ask and you can walk me through getting you the answer. This particular 2006 HONDA ST1300 with 60,575 miles was recently traded on a new vehicle at a Toyota dealership in Limerick, PA roughly 50 miles from me. I was there picking up another bike and I just liked the condition and took it for a spin. Oh boy. I will have to admit, I was impressed at the handling and how perfectly smooth this baby ran. It is a super amazingly clean bike . I don't see any damage other than the one rub bar that has some scrapes. No other nicks, dents or anything else to mention. No haze on the headlights, no busted up plastic body panels, nice saddlebags and a real nice addition is the removable Monokey System GIVI MAXiA tour pack it is equipped with along with ZUMO Navigation. Like I said, it's hard for me to believe it has 60k on it and you won't believe it either. If the odometer showed 18,000 miles you would never question it. What you see in the pictures is what I am offering for sale. The bike runs out perfectly and has no issues whatsoever. I take over 100 pictures to give you multiple angles in different lights so that you can get a clear idea of the condition of the machine. Unparalleled in the world of sport touring, the ST1300 combines long-distance comfort with superlative performance and excellent handling. Unique features - Powerful, liquid-cooled 1261cc longitudinally mounted V-4 engine produces 125 bhp at 8000 rpm and 85 lb./ft. of torque at 6000 rpm for effortless acceleration and passing power. - The 2006 ST1300 meets the California Air Resources Board (CARB) 2008 emissions standards. - Programmed fuel injection (PGM-FI) and electronic digital ignition maximize power output and provide immediate throttle response. - Aluminum frame combines optimal rigidity and tuned flex to produce excellent handling, superb riding comfort and wonderful road feel. - A second model is equipped with an Antilock Brake System (ABS) for even better braking control. - Touring features include full-coverage bodywork, three-way adjustable rider's seat, and two large, 35-liter detachable saddlebags. Windscreen height can be adjusted manually, and both models feature push-button, motor-driven windscreen adjustability to alter height and angle. Engine/Drivetrain - Compact, powerful 1261cc DOHC 90 V-4 engine with an oversquare bore and stroke of 78mm x 66mm. Longitudinal engine-mounting eliminates an inefficient 90-degree turn in the power flow for improved drivetrain efficiency. - The ST1300's low overall center of gravity contributes to improved low speed handling. The 360 degree crank contributes to a very broad powerband. Two engine counterbalancers virtually eliminate primary and secondary vibration. Both gear-driven counterbalancer shafts are installed in the lower crankcase, to the left side of the crankshaft. The first shaft is driven directly by the crankshaft at a 2:1 ratio. The second shaft is positioned below the first and is driven in the opposite direction by the first balancer shaft's drive gear. The combination of these two balancers assures a supremely comfortable ride for the long-distance touring rider. - Aluminum composite cylinder sleeves are high-pressure-formed from sintered aluminum powder impregnated with ceramic and graphite. The composite sleeves provide better wear resistance and superior heat dissipation compared to conventional sleeves. - Silent-type cam-chain drive eliminates the previous model's wider belt-driven cam drive, reducing engine length 10mm and lowering overall weight. - Large, 31mm intake valves and 27mm exhaust valves feed a combustion chamber with a 10.8:1 compression ratio. - Direct shim-under-bucket valve actuation system ensures high-rpm durability and allows 16,000-mile valve maintenance intervals. - Four 36mm throttle bodies. - High-pressure PGM-FI delivers fuel at 50 psi into each injector. - Fuel is delivered through eight laser-drilled nozzle holes in each injector, producing a very fine spray and a highly combustible air/fuel charge for maximum combustion efficiency and power. - PGM-FI combines a sophisticated throttle sensor, advanced 3-D digital fuel injection and ignition mapping and precisely metered fuel delivery to produce smooth and linear throttle response. - ECU-controlled closed-loop emission control system utilizes two oxygen sensors to constantly deliver a precise air/fuel mixture, while two exhaust catalyzers further reduce emissions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen. - Auto-enriching system is integrated into PGM-FI module, optimizing the air/fuel mixture on cold starts and eliminating the need for a manual choke. - Four-into-two stainless steel exhaust system features a pair of attractive triangular-section, 5.4-liter mufflers with stainless steel heat shields. - Dampers on the transmission mainshaft, clutch and drive shaft reduce noise, vibration and driveline lash. - High-output, 660-watt air-cooled alternator is located between the cylinder banks, contributing to a shorter and more compact engine design. - U-shape aluminum radiator has excellent cooling capacity, and a ring-type fan draws air through the radiator at low speeds to ensure stable operating temperatures for consistent performance and long engine life. - Sturdy eight-plate hydraulic clutch. - Cassette-type five-speed transmission features gear ratios that allow for quicker acceleration and excellent roll-on performance. - Quiet and reliable shaft-drive system is virtually maintenance-free. Chassis/Suspension - Aluminum frame features a massive steering head casting and triple-box-section spars. The V-4 engine serves as a tuned, stressed frame member. The solid engine-mounting system utilizes specially designed hangers and carefully matched mounting bolts to provide both excellent road feel and minimal engine vibration. - Lightweight aluminum swingarm is carefully matched to the frame to provide an ideal balance of rigidity and tuned flex for optimal handling. - Rigid aluminum upper triple-clamp and a 45mm Honda Multi-Action System (HMAS) cartridge front fork provide excellent suspension control in a wide range of riding conditions. - The rear suspension incorporates a single shock, which mounts directly on the swingarm. The shock offers 1.2 inches of spring preload adjustability. - Linked Braking System (LBS) uses a second master cylinder and a proportional control valve (PCV) to couple the three-piston calipers of the dual-disc front and single-disc rear brakes for even better braking feel, while providing the peace of mind of an LBS system. Using the front brake lever activates the outer two pistons of the front calipers and the two outer pistons of the rear caliper. Rear pedal engagement activates the center piston of the rear brake caliper and the center pistons of the front calipers, and a delay valve slows initial front brake response to minimize front-end dive. - ABS model combines with LBS for a wide range of braking and steering control. ABS features an electric-motor-driven modulator that gives quick, precise braking pressure adjustments and smooth ABS operation. The system incorporates an integrated ECU controller, self-diagnostics with an interactive ECU test function, and automatic protection against system failure. - The ST1300's 310mm stainless steel floating front brake discs feature a lightweight seven-spoke inner rotor and 316mm rear rotor saves another 10.5 ounces, further reducing unsprung weight. - Silver wheels are three-spoke U-section cast aluminum. 5.0-inch-wide rear wheel is nearly 9 ounces lighter than the previous design and sports a large, low-profile 170/60ZR-17 radial tire. The 3.5-inch-wide front wheel carries a 120/70ZR-18 radial tire. Additional Features - Full-coverage bodywork features an Aero-Ellipse form that incorporates striking parabolic lines to accentuate the look of speed as well as enhance stability at high speeds. - Three-position rider's seat provides an adjustment range of 1.2 inches vertically and 1.0 inch horizontally. From the forward and lowest position, the seat can be moved up 0.6 inches and back approximately 0.5 inches to the middle position and again by the same amount to the highest rear position. - A motor-driven adjustable windscreen offers 7.4 inches and 13 degrees of adjustability for greater wind protection and touring comfort. A thumb-operated pushbutton on the left handlebar operates the windscreen motor. An additional 2.3 inches of manual adjustment is possible by repositioning the windshield on the mounting brackets. - Integrated lockable and detachable saddlebags hold 35 liters each (large enough for a full-face helmet). The saddlebags contain straps to limit bag opening to 90 degrees to better secure the contents. The straps are easily unbuckled when the bags are dismounted, permitting full access. - Rugged, plastic-covered body-protector stays extend outward to protect the bodywork in case of a tip-over. - Dual-section fuel tank places 5.5 gallons of fuel in the conventional tank location with an additional 2.2 gallons located in a sub-tank located low in the chassis. This results in an increase in fuel capacity and an even weight distribution for fuel. - An electric fuel pump operates inside the sub-tank, providing consistent fuel pressure for the PGM-FI system. - Headlight features dual lenses with twin-filament H4 low/high beam bulbs and multi-reflectors. - A convenient push button located on the left side of the fairing electrically adjusts the headlight height over a 2.5-degree range. - Roomy cockpit and ergonomically designed dual-density seat offer true long-haul comfort. - Attractive, lightweight two-piece aluminum handlebars. - A locking left-side fairing pocket offers the carrying capacity of an automobile console; a weather-resistant vinyl flap covers the right-side pocket. - Breakaway rear view mirrors minimize damage in the event of a tipover. - Padded passenger grabrails. - Convenient centerstand assist-lever folds neatly away when not in use. - Integrated front and rear turn signals. - Integrated ignition switch/fork lock. A single ignition key operates all locks. Just some thoughts: You know, as Americans weve never lived in fear and were not about to start now. No high gas prices, no lyin politician and no slithering terrorist will ever keep me from ridin my Harley because FEAR SUCKS! Freedom and wind will outlast hard times and I dont know about you, but Im gonna ride no matter what! Now dont you think its time for YOU to experience what our forefathers must have thought FREEDOM really looked like! Theres nothing like throwing your leg over the heart pounding V Twin engine that has been the heart and soul of a Harley Davidson for close 115 years. The feel youll get when youre cruisin the streets well thats something every man dreams of and every woman secretly desires. So follow your dreams and allow Harleys Direct turn your dream into reality, today. About My Prices: I do my best to offer higher quality, lower mileage bikes than anyone else and do it at a fair price. Others may be offering bikes for less, but not for a comparable machine. My bikes generally have significantly lower miles than "average" bikes for similar comparisons so mine would be more expensive than a same year bike often, with 40, 50 or 60,000 miles on it. If you think my price is unfair for the condition and mileage, be open with your reasoning, be fair and reasonable and I'll do my best to work with you and make every effort to bring your lifelong dream into reality. About Harleys Direct: I have been a Harley enthusiast for almost 35 years and enjoy them so much that I buy and sell them as a hobby. I handle only top quality machines and when I can get my hands on them, am able to offer them at better than average prices for identical motorcycles found at franchise dealerships. I can do this because I have no overhead and only one mouth to feed. My bikes are not purchased at Powersports Auctions; they are not repos or the bikes other dealers rejected. I purchase the majority of my bikes right out of the garages of the original owners and occasionally from auto dealerships where they are traded. I search high and low for the best motorcycles available and travel upwards of 250 miles in any one direction leaving home some days at 6am and returning many nights at 11pm to find my Harleys. I am positive that there isnt anyone on the internet that works any harder than I do to bring top quality machines to their clients. I only offer above average inventory to the select few who are fortunate enough to "run across" a "harleysdirect.com" offering. Every bike is carefully gone over by a certified Harley technician with adjustments to all necessary components, a fresh oil change and a thorough test ride. I guarantee all my Harleys to be of the best quality and the cleanest found anywhere with no stories or long explanations. If you aren't 100% satisfied with your purchase I will happily release you with no questions and a full refund of your deposit. I have sold bikes to more than 40 states, Costa Rica, Australia, Germany, Puerto Rico, Arab Emeritus Dubai, Canada, Laos, Thailand and many of my local communities and I do not have any unhappy client anywhere. I'm a very particular person and do this for a fun. I will tell you what I know and can see. People say I'm a little anal, I just think I'm particularly fussy. My personal bikes get no more attention when I clean, detail and service them. I like to keep it simple, no pressure, no sales pitches, no screaming or yelling about "this months special" just straight forward biker honesty. You WILL love dealing with "harleysdirect.com"! **ALERT** All of my machines are for sale outside of Ebay and I would estimate that 90% of my Harleys sell BEFORE the auction comes to a close so dont delay. Most of my buyers contact me and discuss the particulars and make their decision to buy directly. This causes many to miss out on some quality machines at extremely fair prices. So please know that I am happy to answer any questions you may have and understand that buying on line may be new to you. Give me a call and well see if we cant put you at ease. Out of state buyers are welcome to purchase a temporary transit tag at our local notary for an additional fee. You will need a valid motorcycle insurance identification card and a valid drivers license to do so. SCAM WARNING I have had two customers scammed by criminals who mostly function outside the USA and who contact them representing my listed or recently ended auctions. They will make you an offer that should seem too good to be true but two have fallen for it. They will also tell you that they want to do the deal through eBay to receive their protection service, but it is a farce. IF you receive ANY communication from ANYONE but my email address or my cell number I would suggest you do not get caught up in the smoke and mirrors. One of the two customers lost $9,000.00 and the other $6,000.00 so dont get suckered in. CALL ME on my cell number listed BEFORE you wire or PayPal ANYONE funds for one of my bikes. This incredible looking 1999 FLHRCI Road King Classic sporting ONLY 6,626 miles! That's not a missprint, ONLY 6,626 miles on this beauty. In the ever classic Vivid Black it was purchased from a gentleman about 55 miles from me just outside King of Prussia, PA when his wife came down with some debilitating physical issues and his full attention and efforts were needed for her well being. Sold new at Electric City Harley Davidson this beautiful "Like New" machine has had very impressive care. It comes with the original manuals and is very clean and has been well cared for by the previous owner. I personally inspected and detailed the bike and saw nothing to raise any concern. I see my share of older bikes and this one can stand its ground next to any brand new motorcycle anywhere. There is not a ding, scratch, dent or anything that I detected anywhere on the bike. It is one of the most impressive bikes I've seen in a long time. The bike is actually collectable caliber. The front and rear wide whitewall tires are both 90% or better. The leather seats are like new with no wear or damage. Every item on the bike works just as it should. And heres a thought to ponder as you considering this incredible machine. From 1999 to 2006 these bikes were virtually identical in every way. So buying a 1999 is really no different than buying a 2006 model. You just generally have more coin in your pocket for goodies to dress it up with. And the feel youll get when youre cruisin the streets well that is something every man dreams of and every woman secretly desires. When youre on the highway and the legs need a stretch, just flip the kickstand down and sit back and watch the onlookers drool. The Road King Classic is a motorcycle with enough traditional styling to drop jaws throughout the continent. The Road King Classic boasts laced wheels, fat white-walls and gorgeous leather saddlebags with hard inserts so they keep their shape across the long miles. Slightly narrower new handlebars provide improved ergonomics. Fender tips, tank and seat valance all boast a metal emblem. The model comes with a fuel-injected, chrome-and-black Harley- Davidson Twin Cam 88 engine.FLHRCI Road King Classic standard features:Heritage-rich stylingVibration-isolated, Black and Chrome Twin Cam 88 EngineLarge, Hiawatha headlight and chrome nacelleDetachable windshieldLarge, tank-mounted speedometerTwo-piece seatLeather saddlebagsVibration-isolated, Black and Chrome Twin Cam 88 EngineTriple-disc brakesAir-adjustable touring suspensionJust some thoughts:You know, as Americans weve never lived in fear and were not about to start now. OWN A PIECE OF MOTORCYCLE HISTORY !This is a limited production "Tuber", one of the last hand assembled by a few of Erik Buell's expert team in East Troy Wisconsin, back in the early days, only 384 were made this first year of the S3T in 1997. American Muscle, made in USA. Very light but strong hand laid fiberglass fender, fairing, gas tank, and rear tail section. Once Harley took over Buell in 1998, the expensive to make fiberglass components all went to mass production cheap ABS plastic. Ducati style hand crafted chrome-moly perimeter frame, Performance Machine front and Brembo rear calipers, and inverted WP forks. Corbin seat ($500), D&D Racing carbon fiber exhaust cannister ($500), lightweight quick release lockable luggage ($1500 option), new sport touring tires; front IRC ProTech SP-11F, rear Metzeler RoadTech Z6 ($400), newer AGM battery ($100) , newer front brakes, new rear brakes. That's already $3000 in stuff without even mentioning the rest of the bike. USA bidders only. MODEL YEARS PRODUCED 97-98, 00-02 APPROX. NUMBER BUILT 1,779 1997 = 384 1998 = 630 1999 = NIL 2000 = 349 2001 = 164 2002 = 252 Displacement: 1203cc 91HP@5800RPM Torque: 87 ft.lbs @ 5,200 rpm Bought it in September 2012 with 14665 miles, as a third bike that I always wanted, and have only put on a thousand miles in three years. Originally I was going to completely refreshen the bike to showroom condition...someday...well guess its time for a new owner. Another "Bueller" enthusiast would be perfect. Starts and runs excellent, it is tuned and piped for 100HP like the later Thunderstorm motor but without the troublesome head and cylinder gasket issues of the 1998 and later models. Has always been run on Mobil One synthetic 15w50. Primary chain and belt drive tension adjusted, valves are maintenance free hydraulic pushrods, self adjusting. Carburetor has been re-jetted for performance. Rear end lowered two inches for better comfort, can easily be redone to original. Handles incredible, upright sitting position and pretty comfortable in the saddle overall. I added rubber gel grips to smooth out some hand vibration. Bike is very light, only around 450lbs, top speed around 130 in under a minute for those adrenaline junkies. The luggage black tubing frame is one piece and removes in minutes for a very sport bike look, tail fender was also clipped by previous owner for a very clean modern look. Its imperfect, if it was showroom the value would be $5,000. It was almost $14,000 new in 1997. This rare Thunderbolt ST3 needs some small cosmetic details finished; gas tank ovals were going to be airbrushed with the new Pegasus Buell symbols, some small paint bubbles on gas tank, left foot peg rubber end is broken off, some scratches on saddle bags. Fairing leg lowers missing, removed for better cooling. Upper plastic belt drive cover missing, removed for easy drive belt inspection. Custom made license plate bracket, nice, but not original. Bonus: BUY IT NOW winner will also receive two authentic Buell saddlebag liners which are worth $200 (not pictured), they are no longer available from Buell and nearly impossible to find. Keep in mind Ebay charges $125 to the seller (me), so if you can come see it in person, cash in pocket will get a better deal. I am near the Pittsburgh Airport, fly in, I will pick you up, ride home. Its reliable enough to ride cross country on any given day. Everything works as it should. It's listed for sale local so I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. An outdoor fabric cover is included if needed. I have many other photos if you request, apologies for the poor quality. Mileage will go up slightly as I still ride it every week. Also I am open to trading my Buell Thunderbolt plus cash to anyone who has an adventure type bike I can occasionally ride off road; like a Buell Ulysses, Triumph Tiger, BMW, KTM, Husqvarna, etc. Unlike most motorcycles, consider this one an investment rather than an expense. The value goes up slightly every year instead of down, and in 2017, at twenty years, will appreciate even faster as a classic. (nice unedited article below for those curious about Buells. Here in Pittsburgh, where Erik Buell grew up, worked as a motorcycle mechanic, and attended the University of Pittsburgh; Buells are LEGEND.) THE 1999 BUELL S3 THUNDERBOLTBy Chuck Hawks Thunderbolt! That is the only way to understand this motorcycle. I had looked at Buell motorcycles, especially the top of the line S3 Thunderbolt, almost every time I visited my local Harley-Davidson dealer, but I never understood these motorcycles until I finally took a test ride. That is what the Buell motorcycles are all about: the ride. There are fancier, plainer, costlier, cheaper, prettier, homelier, faster, slower, lighter, heavier, bigger, and smaller motorcycles available, but in all my years of riding I have never ridden anything like a Buell. That also seems to be the opinion of the Buell owners I have talked to, including those who have owned a variety of expensive (read Italian) sport bikes. Speaking of which, Harley's investment in Buell appears to be paying off. Last year (1998), Buell outsold all of the other "specialty sport bikes" (a term which, I believe, excludes the regular production of the Japanese Big Four) in the U.S. except Ducati, who managed to stay in first place by the slimmest of margins. This year, Buell expects to outsell Ducati and take over the number one spot. As I write this, in 1999, the Buell line of Vee-twin sport bikes consists of three models. There is the surprisingly economical M2 Cyclone, the X1 Lightning street fighter, and the sport or sport-touring oriented S3 Thunderbolt. All exhibit similar, but not identical, styling and performance, and all three are powered by a modified Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 motor. All three are sporty motorcycles designed to get you off the line and down the road quickly, with the maximum amount of fun. Real world performance is the forte' of these bikes, and not much can catch them on the road. Like all Buells, but unlike most other sport and sport-touring bikes, the engine of the S3 is left open to view. There is no bodywork to hide that big powerplant. The visible V-twin motor is probably the easiest way to identify a Buell American Motorcycle. In a world of look-alike sport bikes, nothing else looks like a Buell. Because I am a fan of the sport-touring concept, the Thunderbolt S3T is the Buell for me. All Thunderbolts feature a frame mounted sport fairing designed to protect the rider and gas tank (without obscuring the motor), You get to pick from a variety of color combinations for the Thunderbolt. My favorite color scheme for 1999 is the "Molten Orange" (fairing, tank, and tail section) with "Nuclear Blue" (frame and wheels) color scheme. Hey, there's safety in conspicuity! I recommend the S3T touring package. This includes touring handlebars, fairing lowers, two fitted soft storage bags for the fairing, an underseat tote bag (perfect for a toolkit, and not much else), and the newly improved, color coordinated, detachable, hard saddlebags, which come with fitted removable liners. The saddle bags come with your choice of deep (read bulky) or narrow (read trim) covers. Although the deep covers will swallow a full face helmet, I prefer the sleeker and more attractive narrow covers, a triumph of form over function. The other covers can be ordered separately later, if it becomes necessary. I don't have much use for the color matched fairing lowers, included in the S3T touring package, because they trap even more of the already excessive heat generated by the big 74 cubic inch engine throbbing within inches of the rider's legs, and detract from the bike's appearance. Also, they are fairly flimsy (the body parts of these bikes are designed to be light in weight) and stick out to the sides, and are therefore liable to damage if the bike falls over in a parking lot mishap (or something similar). Fortunately, they are designed to be easily removed. Two options available only from the aftermarket (as I write this) are a taller "touring" windshield, and thicker, softer, gel handgrips (is anybody at Buell taking notes?). Buell does offer an excellent tank bag, which I recommend. The result is a sport-touring bike from the sporty end of the spectrum. Other neat features of the Thunderbolt include a chrome-moly tubular perimeter frame, digital electronic fuel injection (which eliminates the hassle of a fuel tank petcock, as well as a choke), hydraulic self-adjusting valve lifters, electronic ignition, belt drive, stainless steel header pipes, fully adjustable suspension with inverted front forks and a rear mono shock which operates in extension, aluminum arc swingarm, hollow 3-spoke cast wheels, "Z" rated radial tubeless tires, superb brakes, completely sealed maintenance-free battery, halogen headlight with an adjustment knob in the fairing, excellent fairing mounted mirrors (you actually see the traffic behind you, instead of your arms), European passing lamp flasher (a little trigger on the left handlebar controls that flashes the high beam), and folding footpegs. About all that is missing is self-canceling turn signals (Dear Buell representative: please note). All 1999 Buells come with a much improved dual seat, and I am happy to report that the new, wide, Thunderbolt seat is adequately comfortable for solo commuting and Sunday rides. I have not taken any long trips, so I cannot comment on its suitability for serious touring. A drawback to the wider seat is that it is a longer reach to the ground than it used to be from the old, uncomfortable but narrower, version. The factory specification says the seat height is 29.5 inches, but they must have measured it with the suspension at both ends set to the lowest possible setting, and the tires flat. It feels higher than that. The Thunderbolt would not be my first choice, given my 30 inch inseam, for a lot of complicated parking lot maneuvers. Nor is it a particularly good bike for riding with a passenger. The bike is somewhat top heavy to start with, and this top heavy feeling is aggrivated by a seat that puts the passenger too high and too far back. If you ride two up a lot, a Buell may not be the bike for you. After mentioning the new seat, I should mention that I find the rider's seating position quite comfortable. An average size rider is postioned in a relaxed position with a slight froward lean. It is better, in my opinion, than the seating position on a BMW R 1100RS sport-tourer, or a Triumph Thunderbird Sport (bikes with which it might reasonably be compared). The location of the rider's footpegs, in particular, is very good. So is the height and reach of the touring handlebar. The layout of the handlebar controls and switches is conventional, and easy to learn. Mounted in the dash are a large tach and speedo, plus a surprisingly useful quartz clock. Also on the dash are a variety of idiot lights, including a handy low fuel warning light which illuminates when .4 gallon of petrol remains. The large 5.4 gallon fuel tank means 225-265 miles (on average) before the low fuel warning light comes on. This is outstanding range, greater than that offered by most luxury touring bikes. On a recent 205 mile Saturday ride from Eugene to Sisters and back, involving both the old and new Mckenzie Highways over Oregon's Cascade Mountains, I actually averaged 59.94 miles per gallon. That would mean approximately 300 miles from a full tank of gas before the low fuel light comes on! More complete technical specifications for all of the Buells, and many other top sport bikes, can be found in the "Sport Motorcycle Comparison Chart," on my Travel page. The only area that needs improvement, to make the Thunderbolt a decent touring bike, is rider protection. The factory supplied windshield is pure sport bike. Combined with the smallish fairing, it offers good protection for the torso, none for the hands, and directs the slipstream coming over the windshield about at the chinbar of the rider's helmet. This is tolerable on a Sunday sport ride, but fatiguing on a long freeway ride. I fitted a Rifle brand replacement windshield 17 inches tall (the only aftermarket replacement I could find) and while this represents a marginal improvement, it is far from ideal. The factory windshield is very short, about 13 inches, and angled at what appears to be less than 45 degrees above the horizontal. The Rifle replacement is angled almost bolt upright, and still too low. The wind collapses behind and around this windshield, and hits the rider in the face and shoulders. It is marginally better than the factory windshield, in that you are being hit in the face by broken air (I believe the aerodynamic term is "burble"), rather than the almost laminar airflow off the factory windshield. Faint praise, to be sure, since at speed the rider's head is still continually buffeted by the wind. If I lay over the tank, the Rifle windshield provides excellent protection--but who wants to ride a long distance laying over the tank? What is needed is a windshield taller than the Rifle version by about 5 inches, and angled back at about 60 degrees. This would put it somewhere between the excessively upright stance of the Rifle windshield, and the very swept-back angle of the factory windshield, and hopefully it would send the slipstream over the rider's head. Certainly a competent designer, with a little practice, could produce a satisfactory touring windshield for the Thunderbolt fairing. It has been done for plenty of other motorcycles. It is no secret that Buell motorcycles have had something of a "kit bike" reputation. After all, Eric Buell originally started building them in his garage. (Bill Harley and the Davidson brothers started the same way, back in 1903.) Everyone agreed that they were a blast to ride, but niggling problems like cracks in ultra light body parts, excessive heat radiating from the engine and exhaust pipes, broken engine mounts, uncomfortable seats, saddle bag latches that didn't work, and similar problems have drawn criticism, and rightly so. The 1999 models are the first since Harley-Davidson acquired 98% of Buell American Motorcycles. Eric Buell remains in charge, and still owns 2% of the stock. Harley had previously owned half of the company, with Buell owning the other half. The changes allowed by Harley's deep pockets are apparent. Everything has been improved, including the frame, engine mounts, fuel injection, front forks, swingarm, rear monoshock, seat, handlebar controls, the S-3 fairing, the S3 saddlebags, and more. Unfortunately, work remains to be done to eliminate the small, niggling problems to which the bikes are still prone. Judging by my experience with the S3, build quality still does not appear to be as good as a Harley-Davidson. In fact, it is probably below that of an average Japanese motorcycle, not really bad, but not perfect. There is no assembly line at the Buell factory. Each motorcycle is built individually, by a small team of workers, who work only on that particular bike until it is finished. This system yields great job satisfaction, high employee morale, a lot of promise for the future, and motorcycles that are maybe a little less uniform than they might otherwise be. Before founding Buell American Motorcycles, Eric Buell worked as an engineer for Harley-Davidson. Based on what I have read about Eric Buell, the most basic ingredients of his design philosophy seem to be centralization of mass, low unsprung weight, and frame rigidity. Let's take a quick look at these concepts, because they are central to why a Buell is so much fun to ride. I am no engineer, but as a sailor I am familiar with the benefits of mass centralization. A boat designed with the weight concentrated in the center, instead of out at the ends, will respond more quickly. It will tend to ride over, rather than plow through, the waves. Two people with access to a small skiff, dinghy, or rowboat can experiment with this concept. First, have one person sit in the very bow, and the other at the stern. Note how the boat feels sluggish and responds slowly to the waves. Now move both people (the mass) to the middle of the boat. Suddenly it feels more lively, and responds faster, now that the mass is centralized. The same basic principle also holds true for motorcycles. This is why Buell concentrates the weight of the heavy components of the motorcycle, the engine/transmission, muffler, gas tank, rear monoshock, and battery near the center of the motorcycle. Everything is basically placed above or below the engine/transmission unit, the heaviest single component of the motorcycle. The result is that Buell motorcycles feel exceptionally lively, and a lively motorcycle is more fun to ride. Unsprung weight is the weight of the components not supported by the suspension, principally the wheels, tires, lower fork legs, and brakes. Lower unsprung weight allows the tires to maintain better contact with the uneven surface of the road, thus making for a safer, better controlled, and more enjoyable ride. Buell uses hollow 3-spoke alloy wheels of the lightest and most rigid type for all of their models. For the Thunderbolt, Buell uses expensive Showa inverted front forks. Inverted forks put the smaller diameter fork section on the bottom, which lowers unsprung weight. They are also extremely strong, and more rigid than conventional telescopic forks. Going further to eliminate as much unsprung weight as possible, the Thunderbolt has a single stainless steel floating front brake disc, rather than the dual discs found on almost all other specialty sport bikes. Brake discs and their associated calipers are very heavy. To ensure adequate swept area, that single disc is the largest found on any production bike, 340mm in diameter. To make it lightweight while retaining the necessary thickness in cross section, it is extremely narrow in profile, and to ensure an excess of stopping power, the Thunderbolt comes with a 6-piston front brake caliper. "Stoppies" are easy on a Buell. Other premium motorcycle manufacturers can and do take some of these same steps to lower unsprung weight, but none combine all of these strategies as Buell does. Almost everyone agrees that a rigid frame is crucial to precise handling and control. Buell selected the expensive but effective method of using chrome-moly alloy steel tubing to build a perimeter frame with triangulated sections. Buell calls it a "geodesic perimeter frame." In the best modern fashion, the engine serves as a stressed member of the frame. The result is an exceptionally light and stiff frame, which improves handling and control. A bike that handles precisely and delivers exceptional control is more fun to ride. The centralized mass, low unsprung weight , stiff frame, and premium suspension, when combined with a rather short 55 inch wheelbase and only 24.5 degrees of front-end rake, should result in a light and quick handling motorcycle, and indeed it does. You might think the same combination would also make for a twitchy feeling motorcycle, but it doesn't. I expected, and found, a fast handling bike, but what I found most surprising was the Thunderbolt's excellent static stability. Static stability means that left to its own devices, it will run straight. This is a bike that will run straight as a die with the rider's hands off the handlebar. I guess the 3.8 inches of trail has something to do with that. Whatever the reason, the bike responds quickly, handles superbly, and runs true. Of course, more than trick engineering is necessary to build a complete motorcycle. The motor is the key to performance, and all Buells use a highly modified Harley-Davidson Sportster V-twin engine. The hot-rodded 1203cc "Thunderstorm" power plant used in the Thunderbolt produces an ample 101 horsepower at the crankshaft, and a gut wrenching 90 ft. lbs. of torque. This translates to about 71-78 ft. lbs. of torque and 85-90 hp. at the rear wheel, depending on whose dyno you read. Remember that horsepower is a measurement of work performed over time, and torque is the turning force at the crankshaft (or rear wheel). This is why torque is more important in everyday riding. Torque is what is responsible for that slingshot feeling when you roll the throttle on, not to mention those "power" wheelies. The vibration produced by the compact 45 degree V-twin motor is isolated from the frame, and the rider, by Buell's proprietary "Uniplanar" mounting system. This system works. It is amazing to ride a bike, powered by what is basically a Sportster 1200 engine, that is so smooth. At idle it feels about like a Sportster, but as the RPM increases, vibration diminishes. By the time the tach has moved past 3000 RPM, vibration is almost completely absent. The Sportster, as I wrote in my article "The Harley-Davidson Sportster," is quite pleasant to ride below about 60 MPH (in 5th gear). But vibration intrudes as speeds increase, and becomes uncomfortable (to me) by about 70 MPH. But on its cousin, the Buell Thunderbolt, the faster you go the smoother it gets. At 70 MPH and above, it is uncannily smooth. It is hard to believe it is powered by a Sportster 1200 motor, let alone one producing about a third more power. It seems to me that the Thunderbolt is a pretty good sport-touring bike, by which I mean a great sport bike for Sunday rides, with its power and razor sharp handling, that still has the capability of making overnight and longer trips. It has the range, speed, smoothness, stability, comfortable seating position, and available luggage to serve as a solo touring bike, plus the benefit of a very extensive dealer network should something go wrong while on the road (a good point to consider before purchasing some exotic brand sport-touring bike). Rider protection is the primary deficiency at present, but all it needs is a properly designed touring windshield to bring it up to snuff in that area. I hope that someone, either at Buell or in the aftermarket, will eventually respond to fill this need. If you want a sporty looking motorcycle for cheap transportation, there are more economical alternatives. But if you're leaning toward a sport or sport-touring bike, and ride for the pleasure of the experience, you owe it to yourself to at least test ride a Buell Thunderbolt.

DISCLAIMEREbay has a glitch in their system which does not allow me to choose the "Sell to United States Only" successfully. The listing still says: Sells World Wide. This complaint has been registered and they have not corrected the problem. Therefore please note the following: I DO NOT ACCECPT INTERNATIONAL BIDS OR BUYSI DO NOT SHIP INTERNATIONALLYI SELL ONLY TO RESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1996 Honda 1500 Goldwing SE Trike This trike is raring to go with sound powered helmets included. All that is missing is you and a co-rider. This is a ride that the ladies will love. Beautiful green Honda Goldwing 1500 SE Trike. The bike is a 1996 SE which was top of the line in 1996 I am told. Two tone with darker green accent panels broken by a thin aqua line around panels. Clear title to bike and trailer. After a couple of years of great riding my wife and I decided because of our deteriorating knees to convert it to a trike. We looked at all the brands and designs and finally settled on a Motor Trike kit. The rear looks like a 1937 ford with teardrop tail lights. The work was performed by a well established bike conversion company and has been a great ride ever since. It’s nice to come around a curve and not have to worry about gravel in the roadway. Also it’s nice not to have to put your feet down when you come to a stop. No major repairs and has never been down or been in a vehicle accident. Starts every time, does not need anything that I know of. It is loaded. One little quirk that the ’96 SE’s had was that the display would not immediately come on when the bike was started until it warmed up a few minutes. But this only happened on damp or frosty mornings. And then only a half dozen times. This never was a problem for me. However I am telling you this so you won’t think there is anything wrong with the bike. The tech people said it was a moisture problem on the circuit board until it warmed up. The SE had just about everything you could get. I have also added a ton of stuff myself. I will attempt to list as much as I can think of. I will also show a lot of pics and if you need more you can contact me. And now for the stuff you really want to hear about. Runs excellent The bike has reverse Raked front end Good tires Aluminum mag wheels I installed the following: Big Drink Holder (Butler) Accessory Arm for GPS and/or other accessories 3 Accessory Switch Module mounted on master cylinder Ring of Fire on the front wheel Front Fender Light Trunk Side Lights Custom Comfort Grips Fog Lights LED Accent Lights Rear Accent LED Lights Front Fender Chrome Mud Guard Front Fender Rail Head Light Gravel Shield Trunk Cargo Rack Side Wind Deflectors 2 Accessory Pocket Caddies on both cowlings Running Boards with Heel & Toe Shifter Highway Boards (not pegs) Stock Road and Cornering lights on bottom cowling Several chrome replacement pieces, and I know I have forgotten something. For those of you that are not familiar with the Honda Goldwing (which is the (Cadillac of motorcycles) I will hit the highlights for you. Heat & Air Vents On Board hidden Air Compressor to fill tires or to adjust Air Shocks for the weight of the ride with just a push of a button 2 trunk areas for lots of storage (lockable) Chrome Trailer Hitch with wiring for trailer lights and cargo pod CB Radio, to keep in touch with other riders Stereo Radio and Tape Player with controls on left handle bar CB transmit switch and sound system volume control on left handle bar and the passenger seat as well Passenger Cup Holder Cruise Control Clock in Dash Gas Gauge Temperature Gauge Comfortable Co-Rider Seat with Arm Rests and Adjustable Foot Boards 2 top of the line ¾ Full Face Shield Bell Helmets (black) sound powered to talk to each other and listen to CB and/or Stereo. Also 2 older spare helmets. This trike also comes with a Cycle Mate (2000 CMT) pull behind Trailer, used only 2 times, has lockable top, new mounted spare never on the ground and tires that are practically new. Fitted with a cooler and insulated cover on the tongue. Also comes with a Cargo Pod for short trips. I built this out of the cargo trunks and rear fender that was removed when it was triked. It has been garage kept. It is always on trickle charge and I start it up and let it run a few times during the winter. It has 050234.4 miles on it which is considered low miles. We ride with people who are riding 1977 Interstates with over 200,000 miles and no major repairs. Clear Titles for Trike and Trailer The price of the trike with Matching Cargo Pod, and Cyclemate trailer is $14,000.00. If you are not interested in the Cyclemate trailer subtract $900.00 for a total of $13,100.00. These are pick up items only. All sales final. Sold as is where is. So please ask any questions before you commit to buy. I have more pictures I can send you if you need them. I will require a $500.00 NON REFUNDABLE Paypal down payment within three days of close of sale. Final payment must be made within 10 days of sale. You must either wire transfer the money from your bank account to mine or send a personal check. Personal checks will have to clear bank. Should you decide to ship some or all of the items, you will be responsible for all shipping arrangements and charges and it will be in addition to your winning bid. Called the Ducati 848, the new bike was essentially a smaller-displacement version of the larger 1098, which was released the same year. Coincidentally, the 2008 Ducati 848 will set a few precedents in its manufacturers history. The 2008 Ducati 848 represents the first time that a bike from Ducati uses a wet clutch. This was a swift departure from the dry clutch used on previous machines, which is a device built for performance and characterized by its noise. The wet clutch, on the other hand, emanates less noise, is lighter, and provides longer service intervals than the dry clutch. With this device installed on the 848, Ducati was placing less emphasis on a closed course circuit feel for its street racing-oriented sport bikes. The wet clutch of the 2008 Ducati 848 is harnessed to a six-speed manual transmission, which means that Ducati still wanted to retain the excitability of driving a sport-oriented bike. The gearbox is paired with a four-stroke longitudinal-twin cylinder, four-valves-per-cylinder desmodromic engine called the ""Testastretta Evoluzione."" The engine is where the bike gets its three-digit suffix; it displaces at 849.4 cubic centimeters (rounded down to 848). The 2008 Ducati 848 generates 134 horsepower at 10,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 70.8 pound-feet of torque at 8,250 RPM. The bore and stroke is measured at 3.7 by 2.41 inches, or 94 by 61.2 millimeters. Also, Ducati integrates a liquid cooler to each 2008 Ducati 848 engine to prevent overheating and consequently malfunction. Peak fuel capacity for the bike is 4.1 gallons. Each 2008 Ducati 848 has halogen headlights for exterior lighting, an engine immobilizer as a theft deterrent, rearview mirrors for improved visibility during driving, all-wheel disc brake layout for superior braking, and an exhaust guard for occupants protection from the exhaust heat. Huge 17-inch five-spoke aluminum wheels, a rear spoiler, a front and rear fender, and aggressively styled plastic covering add to the bikes sporty look. The 2008 Ducati 848 weighs 370 lbs. and possesses a wheelbase of 58.3 inches. The two-piece seat, large enough for a driver and one passenger, is set at a height of around 33 inches. Overall, the 2008 Ducati 848 shares many of its components with its larger 1098 counterpart, such as its body style, steel frame, and fuel tank. However, the 848 became the bigger seller. Ducati moved more than 1,200 units within the bikes first six months in the market. Such sales performance vaulted the 2008 Ducati 848 past the 1098 to the position of the fastest-selling Ducati motorcycle in history, accounting for 20 percent of Ducatis sales in the North American market. The manufacturers suggested retail price for the bike is $13,495. Happy Shopping!!..... The Superbike family for 2008 features two important changes: the introduction of a mid-engine size version, the light and nimble 848, and an extreme racing version for all those who demand the maximum performance, the 1098 R version that will take part in the 2008 World Superbike Championship. The priority in every step of the new Ducati Superbike development has been performance first. Every system, every detail and every component has been studied, pared down to its essence and performance increased to the maximum. If it didnt make our Superbike lighter, faster or deliver quicker lap times, it wasnt considered. The 848 and 1098 are the lightest, fastest stopping, quickest lapping Ducati Superbikes in history. For the first time Ducati MotoGP and World Superbike technology have been combined to create premier sport bikes. The results are stunning. The look and stance of the 848 and 1098 were designed by the combination of race track technology, track-derived components and Ducati heritage. Their striking aerodynamic shape naturally embraces a riding position, configured by our racers and test riders for optimum speed and agility. The racing spirit takes form. The new Ducati Superbikes immediately strike you with their purposeful, no-nonsense attitude. Performance is first and foremost in every detail.Trademark Ducati features like the high tail section and compact front-end meld with twin underseat silencers and single-sided swingarm to express aerodynamics and agility. Add the new Testastretta Evoluzione engine at the heart of the machines and you get all-out performance Ducati Superbikes that seem to be moving fast, even when at rest.A number of firsts for Ducati and production sport bike design have been introduced. The 848 and 1098 are the first to have a data acquisition system integrated as standard equipment and the first to use an ingenious construction method for their weight-saving single-sided swingarm. More firsts for a road-going Ducati include the direct application of MotoGP technology, like the power producing GP6-derived elliptical throttle bodies and the use of the information-rich instrumentation originally developed for the Desmosedici GP7. Furthermore, the 1098 is the first production motorcycle to have the amazing stopping power of Brembo Monobloc brakes. DUCATI 848 As agile and light as a Supersport, as powerful as a SuperbikeThe new 848 enjoys all the performance advancements of the entire Superbike family, while adding its own innovations to redefine the middleweight sport bike class. The words agile and refined aptly describe the 848. At 168kg (369lbs) the 848 is an amazing 20kg (44lbs) lighter than its predecessor, and a significant 5kg (11lbs) lighter than its larger capacity brother, the 1098.The highly advanced 848 engine uses an improved method of engine case production in which cases are vacuum die-cast formed. While providing significant weight savings of more than 3kg (6.5lbs), this method also ensures consistent wall thickness and increased strength. Further refinements include a sophisticated wet clutch that offers 1kg (2.2lbs) less weight, a much higher service life, improved clutch feel and quiet operation. With the first twist of the wrist, the powerful rush of the Testastretta Evoluzione engine confirms that the rules have changed. The 848s 134hp is not only 30% more powerful than its predecessor, but it provides a power-to-weight ratio even better than the potent 999. THE NEW ENGINE The new 848 Testastretta Evoluzione engine becomes the benchmark for the middleweight sportsbike category, benefitting from all the experience accumulated with the larger engine on the 1098. It successfully adopts the same design guidelines and the same compact cylinder and cylinder head layout, but introduces for the first time ever an innovative solution for the crankcase, which has been designed with a further weight reduction for this advanced engine in mind. The overall layout of this engine integrates a series of avant-guard solutions, confirming the close links with the experience of Ducatis racing department. The 849cc engine has bore and stroke values of 94mm and 61.2mm respectively, which produce a ratio that is only slightly inferior to the 1098 (1.54 compared with 1.61), while maintaining the highly over-square layout typical of racing engines.Power output is an impressive 134hp (98.5kW) at 10,000 rpm and maximum torque is 9.8kgm (96Nm) at 8250 rpm. The power and torque values confirm the high performance level of this engine, especially when compared to its predecessor, the Testastretta-engined 749.The cylinder head has been modified in line with the characteristic bore and stroke of the engine in order to optimize the fluid dynamics of the intake (straight and plunging) and exhaust ducts and combustion chamber. The compression ratio is 12:1.The valve angle is the same as the 1098 engine and diameter is 39.5mm for the inlet valve and 32mm for the exhaust. The technology used sees the application of a bi-metallic alloy that combines increased lightness with resistance and reliability required for these particular components. The desmodromic control system has also been designed with the weight and the inertia of the new components in mind, allowing extremely efficient valve lift during intake and exhaust phases. The excellent results achieved are confirmed by the engines power figures, producing outstanding performance thanks also to the use of MotoGP-derived elliptical throttle bodies, which have been fitted to the 1098 engine. The design of a dedicated elliptical throttle body for the 848 demonstrates the attention that Borgo Panigale engineers have devoted to the development of the Superbike range. The cross-section is reduced from the 60 sq. mm of the 1098 to 56 sq. mm so as to optimize fluid dynamics at every engine speed. Just like on the 1098, the new cylinder heads benefit from fewer components and include magnesium covers. For the first time ever, this Testastretta Evoluzione engine sees the introduction of a special technology for the construction of the engine crankcase: Vacural casting. This is a forced vacuum die casting method that allows jet characteristics to be improved thanks to the absence of porosity, gas inclusion and oxidation. This allows extremely high measurement precision and greater ductility for aluminium alloy. Designers have been able to harness the benefits of this innovative process by redefining the shape and the wall thickness of the new crankcase by means of FEA (Finite Element Analysis) checks, which allowed the required reliability standards to be achieved, while simultaneously obtaining a significant weight saving of 3.5kg.The 848 engine is fitted with a silent modular wet clutch, characterized by an exceptional resistance to wear that will lead to superior duration. This solution makes a useful contribution to weight saving, estimated to be around 1.6kg, which is also due to the use of a different type of clutch cover. The high power figures achieved by this engine also come from the use of the same type of oil cooler and coolant radiator as the 1098s engine, with an increased surface area assisted by lightweight, high flow electric fan assemblies. Finally, the 848s exhaust system follows the same layout and uses the same innovative technology as the 1098. The system terminates with Ducatis trademark twin under-seat silencers, delivering the unmistakable signature sound of the big bore 90 L-Twin. This power unit, just like all the other Ducati engines, has been designed to comply with Euro 3 exhaust emission norms. CHASSIS Trellis frame Developed in cooperation with Ducati Corse, the 848 Trellis frame has a simplified tube layout featuring main section tubes increased in diameter from 28mm to 34mm, while being reduced in thickness from 2mm to 1.5mm. The result is a 14% increase in rigidity and a weight saving of 1.5kg (3.3lbs). Single-sided swingarm The 848, as all the Superbike family, is equipped with a unique single-sided swingarm. The engineers were encouraged to re-think the construction technique of this element. The solution was to produce the main operational components using individual aluminium castings so as to ensure strength around the pivot points, wheel hub and suspension links, with fabricated aluminium sections used to complete the construction into a single, beautifully engineered component. Rear suspension Highlighting the way in which individual components are influenced by each other, the new lightweight Trellis frame and single-sided swingarm have enabled a more compact and further weight-saving rear suspension linkage system to be used featuring separate lower pick-up points for the push-rod and suspension unit. This tandem design effectively reduces stress around the linkage pick-up area of the Trellis frame. Working together with this highly efficient linkage is a fully adjustable Showa single shock for the 848, the same as the 1098. Front suspension At the front the new 848 is equipped with fully adjustable 43mm Showa forks with radial mounts. This type of front suspension is professionally track-tuned and offers superior road holding, delivers superior feedback, and helps every rider to be more confident and in control. CONTROLBrembo Monobloc calipers The 848 brake system is characterized by M4 calipers using four 32mm pistons and two radial mounted pads. Matched to the calipers are two 320mm discs and the combination of these elements achieves spectacular braking power. Super lightweight wheels The new 848 also benefits from lightweight Marchesini Y-shaped spoke wheels. The weight saving of 250gr achieved on the front wheel substantially reduces the moment of inertia and enhances the 848s change of direction and braking performance. The rear wheel is just as impressive with a complete redesign for its single-sided swingarm application that has resulted in a reduction of over 1kg compared with traditional Ducati single-sided swingarm fitments. Finally a 5.50 wheel fitted with a 180/55 tyre guarantees the maximum agility at the rear.
