Up for auction is a real nice un-messed with 71 HD. It has 26,583 actual miles on it and except for the sheet metal that was removed and repainted years ago, this bike has never been touched or disassembled in any way. I found the bike stashed in a barn where it had been for many years. Upon close inspection I could see that none of the covers such as the coil cover, shifter cover, battery box or speedo had any vibration damage, a good indication of a good runner. After purchase I took it home, cleaned the tank, changed the oil, put in fresh gas and it fired right up. I replaced the seat with a leather solo, new drive chain, tires and tubes, battery, plugs and points. The bike runs and drives excellent. The bike was painted black years ago and has some really cold pin striping on the tank and fenders from back in the day. I consider the 71 to be a benchmark motorcycle as far as Harley's go because of the fact it is the last year for drum brakes. Both front and rear and throttle thru the handlebars as well as the cool old switches on the bars such has horn button, headlight switch, etc. The bike retains all the stock wiring so the dash lights all work and the wiring appears to be in real nice shape. I converted the exhaust to single with an old panhead fishtail muffler I had in the barn, and heat tape wrapped the head pipes for a nice old school look. I still have the chrome covers.
