Kawasaki claims that the new Voyager was inspired by 1960s sports cars, but I suspect it would struggle to say exactly which cars inspired any particular aspects. That's because the bike is clearly inspired by – and pitched directly against – Harley-Davidson's Electra Glide Ultra.Many would be hard pushed to tell them apart, suggesting that Kawasaki has at least got the styling right. For all its kitsch appearance, the Voyager is a convincing rival visually.Where many bikes fail in taking on Harley, however, is in matching other qualities of the troubled Milwaukee marque. To be convincing, the Voyager must be an effective tourer and have a good stab at matching the less easily defined qualities that have persuaded more than 50 per cent of big-bike buyers in the States to buy Harley-Davidsons.Some of the detailing will be given nods of approval, such as the white-on-black, simple serif script on the clocks, the chunky chrome ignition switch and of course the overall look of the big V-twin engine, which looks air-cooled even though there's liquid and a tucked-away radiator.But when it comes to feel, the Voyager isn't quite there. The top box, for example, is made of flimsy plastic with cheap catches that were already rusting on my test bike, while the lock wouldn't defeat a nine-year-old. The panniers are of similar quality and out of place on a near-£14,000 motorcycleThe gearchange is too far in the other direction, with a very heavy feel. The clutch's biting point is vague, making tight manoeuvres harder work than they need be, while the engine lacks the rawness of a Harley. That's a difficult criticism to make (many riders would find the smoother Kawasaki preferable) but for me the essence of Harley is the balance between crudeness and sophistication.Like a Harley, the Voyager's top gear is overdrive-tall, poviding a relaxed feel at motorway speeds. But the height of the unadjustable screen cuts right across the field of vision for taller riders such as myself. Even if you are able to look through it, there's no way of clearing rain drops from it – with a layer of winter road sludge, forward visibility is going to be a real issue.If you can see over the top, there's a relentless vibrating turbulence at anything over 80mph, and since the riding position could well induce backache, longer distances can become more tiring than they should. The seat pushed me too far forward, while the forward footboards didn't allow me to take any weight through my legs.There's plenty of Harley-type equipment, including a radio with ambient sound compensation which is surprisingly clear even at high speeds, although it lacks RDS station recognition which is almost universal these days. There are no rear speakers though, the sound is a lot less clear for the pillion. The passenger's legs rub on the bike's paintwork, too, although it's a comfortable place to be. I'm not keen on the radio buttons elbowing the horn push out of its usual place, while the equally busy right switch cluster includes cruise control, which is useful if sometimes jerky when it engages.As with a Harley, there's a lot of heat coming off the engine. This will be welcome in winter but too much, I suspect, on hot summer days.The bike handles well; neutral right down to walking pace and very stable at high speeds – not like a Harley, for once, and all the better for that. However the underdamped suspension can bounce you around on rougher roads, while the 4.4-gallon tank means that you'll need to worry about refuelling after only 150 miles, despite the Harley-beating 40mpg the bike returns.What you get on the Kawasaki is a consistency of quality that Harley still struggles with. The finish and detailing are to a high standard generally (luggage aside) and you know you won't start seeing major components corrode as soon as you roll it out of the showroom. Please read all of this and know what your getting into before jumping the gun on buying or offering. Your clicks hold you responsible for follow through. First a little about me: I am in my mid 50's and have been riding and racing since I was 15. I know these two strokes inside and out. Your not buying from some young squid who beat the life out of a bike and never did maintenance. Now about the bike... 1998 KX250 two stroke. This was Dirt Bike Magazine's and MXA Bike of the year in 98. Great low to mid range power. I have it completely set up for Hare Scramble racing. It's great in the woods and for trail riding. It is NOT set up for MX and I wouldn't suggest using it that way without some changes in gearing and suspension. I started this build by completely sandblasting and inspecting the frame for damage or cracks. Then reinforcing the bottom of the frame for strength and those many hits a woods bike gets on bolders and logs. Powder coated in silver. Skid plate installed also. I fine bead blasted the rims which give them a nice look different from everyone else. The rear wheel is 18". The wheels have new bearing installed. The motor was completely redone. It is bored out to a 265 then sent for replating by US Chrome (who doesn't scrimp on their plating thickness). Brand new crank, rod, and bearings by Wisco. Porting professionally done by Boyesen. I extended the clutch arm lever by 1/2" for an easy 'hydraulic like' pull. Installed new VForce3 reeds and the icing on the cake is a APT cast Smart Carb ($400 alone). No jetting to mess with. It's as close to fuel injection as you can get. Runs spot on no matter the temperature or altitude. NO SPOOGE! Mixing at 32:1. The bike is equipped with an FMF Gnarly pipe with aluminum pipe guard. Repacked silencer. Runs nice and crisp. No Bog or hesitation. I installed an 8oz flywheel weight to help in both keeping more traction to the ground with easier starting and less stalling when lugging. Running 52 tooth rear sprocket enables me to climb anything short of Mt Everest (haha). Very easy to bunny hop over any obstacle. The bike has all brand new plastics. A 3 Gallon Clark tank with Acerbis reserve petcock. Oversize double row radiators. High output coil with Icat. Wide pegs, Brand new kick start lever. Guts tall soft seat foam and new ribbed gripper seat cover. Bark busters of course! All new bearing in linkage, swing arm, and steering stem. IMS shifter. I never got around to getting the suspension re-valved. As far as I know it's pretty much stock. All I did was replace the bushings, seals, and fresh oil. I weigh 175lbs and it works ok for me although the forks seem a little hard while the shock seems a little soft. I've Only raced it twice since finished and don't have time to go out riding. I think I could find my sweet spot adjusting the clickers, but like I said, no time right now. The previous owner weighed like 220 I think. The tires are geomax and not new, but not bald, they will get you by for awhile but I suggest putting on a fresh set of your choice. Don't waste your $$ on a $1200 bike that you have to put another $1000 or more into to bring it up to snuff. This bike DOES NOT have a TITLE. You will get a Bill of sale. As such, I post my personal motorcycles for sale in the dealer section. For vintage motorcycles, you may want to view "All Motorcycles" to find what you are looking for. Twins and singles are the engine configurations I work on. With this custom lowered seat, almost anyone can safely touch the ground with their feet flat on the ground! This custom cafe racer is the continuation of someone else's project. The starter motor was pulled and plugged, the forks were rebuilt and reconfigured, new rear shocks were installed, the front fender/ultra strong fork brace was modified, the swing arm was paint stripped and clear coated, tubes and tires were mounted, clip-ons were installed, engine cases were polished, 2 into 1 header system was created from stock CB350 headers, front drum, front brake plate, front sprocket cover, and rear brake plate had been drilled for cooling, stainless steel Allen head screw conversion installed, new headlight ears mounted, tapered steering stem bearing upgrade installed, and a few other items before I laid hands on it. I added the rear set configuration for both shifting and rear brake, wired the electrical system with modern solid state rectifier, added the cafe seat, added the invisible battery, installed the integrated turn signals with the mirrors and tail light, installed the new halogen headlamp, throttle cable, front brake cable, custom length clutch cable, POR-15 lined fuel tank, VHT epoxy painted tank in matte finish, balanced the wheels, rebuilt the carburetors, tuned up the engine, replaced the drive chain, added the polished aluminum velocity stacks, rebuilt and polished the horn, new kicker rubber, new brake and shifter arms with rear sets, new rear tank rubber mount, Notice the trending void behind the engine by having removed the battery, battery box, side covers, air filters, etc... All color has been removed from the bike leaving only black and metal. Turn signals LEDs are amber, brake and tail lights are red, but only when activated through the smoke lenses. The CL350 Honda was first created in 1968 and every Scrambler came with the traditional Darth Vader tank through the last one produced in 1973. Star Wars was not released until 1977. You take a look at the tail of the CL350 tank and do the math. Darth Bike is a radical ride without the benefit of electric start. I hope to have a lady CB200 rider start the bike in the video to be produced when completed and ready for the photoshoot as well. Will be edited in after her visit. This is my third custom creation since Bike Week Daytona. I have more bikes and have two more custom projects lined up. Contact me to have one built custom for you. Darth was created to be an actual vintage race bike. With only a few modifications, Darth is ready for the track to race in the WERA GP350 and bump up to the GP500 race classes.
