Once a fiercely hard-edged motocrosser, the new and improved KTM is showing a more refined compliance that should gain it some new track-addicted fans in 2009.Right away you know this KTM is different than last years bike. One look into its graphics, one stare at the factory-colored fork and one glance at the blacked-out triple clamps and youll see KTMs forward-thinking style is alive and well. But the beneficial changes dont stop with aesthetics.Clearly the most noticeable improvement and most obvious to the eye is the new front suspension components. The fork on the 2009 450 SX-F shares similar construction refinements with the 250 XC weve already tested. Thinner tubes, stiffer springs and new valving put the fork action in a different direction: a much softer one. Really, KTM engineers accomplished something directly in line with what American customers will appreciate: a more supple, friendlier ride aboard an orange bike. Surely, more riders will feel at home with the new plushness. While the combination of the flex character of the setup and overall softer damping makes fans from novice to intermediate, pro-level riders will need to stiffen up the front end to keep from getting stuck in the wallows. Same goes for the shock, which has its own upgrades.The linkageless shock out back on the 450 SX-F has an all-new PDS needle. This is the linkage in a dual-piston shock system. It acts similar to a carb needle in that upon compression, the amount of oil passing by the needle is reduced the farther the shock travels. When the needle closes off the bypass, the valving includes the secondary piston and the rate of damping force increases. The angle of the shock puts a certain amount of rising rate (like a linkage) on the shock, but the internal valving adds even more dimension to this.The result of all this fluid dynamic needle business is a great rear shock feel. Again, better than the 08 and more friendly to a wider range of riders. Were pretty sure the shock plushness has a lot to do with the improved front end feel, too. Also mirroring the front, the shock seems to be on the soft side for the fastest riders in our testing posse. Dial it in by stiffening it up, and dont forget to use rebound adjustments for traction control!Speaking of adjustments, the only really strange thing about KTMs suspension this year seems to be the sensitivity of the clickers. Our testers all felt the range of one click was huge. So huge that we were looking for half clicks. So click wisely. Or if you want to learn what things do, click recklessly and pay attention.Inside the KTMs renowned motor is some enhancement worth noting. The motor nicely packages more bottom-end than a year ago with the same great overrev and top-end superiority. Everyone is in love with this motor, and since theyve proven to have a solid track record in the durability department, were more than confident giving it a positive endorsement. Changes internally include a new, lighter weight piston which is at least partially responsible for getting the SX-F motor into the revs sooner. The valve train has some updates (lighter finger followers, new valve springs and slightly different timing) to enhance this rev-up further. Also new in the head are revised intake and exhaust ports that match the all-new intake and exhaust manifolds which bookend the top end. In a refinement year, youd think a suspension overhaul and major motor character enhancements would be enough. Especially since KTM has the control and style market more than cornered with its juice clutch, radical braking power and gnarly graphic treatments. But for 09, that game is stepped up, too.New levers and master cylinders for both the brake and clutch side make another nice addition. The clutch is now less-funky feeling with a normal sized lever, and the front brake system (which is all new down to the caliper) is smaller, lighter and easier to modulate. The braking power is still there, though, trust us. The clutch lever also features great position adjustability and boasts fold-away crash-damage resistance.Weve given this orange ride the First Test treatment over here at the Dirt Rider shop, for sure. MSRP - $9298 NVC Price - $8699 The KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition has warmed the hearts of riders for the past four years and now 250F lovers can get a trick Factory Edition machine from KTM, as 2015 marks the first year the Austrian brand has released a 250 SX-F Factory Edition. A bonus to the release of Factory Editions is they are a reliable preview of what the KTM SX-F models will be for 2016. In fact, wed bet all the money in your bank account that the 2016 KTM SX-F models will be almost identical to the Factory Editions, minus the graphics and a few of the bling items. We loved the new 2015 450SX-F Factory Edition (read the test here) and are now big fans of the new 250SX-F Factory Edition as well. KTM went all out when designing and building the Factory Editions, creating two of the lightest production motocross bikes ever. The Factory Editions are all about weight loss, mass centralization and improved performance. The new 250SX-F Factory Edition engine is not only smaller, its 2.4 pounds lighter and more powerful. The clutch is raised 26.9mm and moved back 11.1mm. The crank was moved up 6mm and the connecting rod is 6mm shorter. The cylinder is 130 grams lighter and the camshafts are 150 grams lighter, while the finger followers have a 30% harder DLC coating. Engine changes and improvements allowed KTM to raise the rev limiter to an incredible 14,000 rpm. The clutch basket is revised, to improve oil flow and cooling, and the clutch now uses seven plates instead of eight. The 250SX-F Factory Edition uses the same 44mm Keihin fuel injection system as its 450SX-F counterpart and the Keihin throttle body no longer uses linkage. New throttle cables feature the adjusters up at the throttle tube housing. An all new exhaust system sources a 40mm shorter muffler that is 60mm closer to the center of mass. I have another streetbike for sale and if that sells first I am going to keep the KTM, so I have the right to end this listing at any time. This bike is showroom new with no visible wear anywhere. The bike has a $2300.00 aftermarket carbon fiber dual exhaust system that was installed by the dealer. The entire exhaust system was also sent out and ceramic coated. The bike sounds amazing and gets attention everywhere. The cdi was updated, the bike de-restricted, jetted and put on a dyno to tune all by the dealer. Aftermarket rear signals and a tail tuck kit. Bar end mirrors. All stock parts available. New battery for this year. The bike runs 100% perfect. With only 800 miles, everything is like new. The bike was in the dealer this summer for a 600 mile break-in checkup. The bike is way over 100hp, super light and a joy to ride. Will out run any sport bike in the turns and cruises with no effort on the highway. Very comfortable on the highway. The bike has been geared down slightly for my riding conditions. This is the twin 950 LC8 motor that has incredible power and is known to run to 50k with no problems. This bike was $13,000 new and has over $3500 of aftermarket parts on it.
