1953 Bentley R Type. Chassis Number B295TO This truly is that rare, rust/damage free motorcar so many advertise but can't deliver. Finely preserved original, NOT a restoration. Perhaps one of the finest four-speed manual gearbox equipped Bentleys left IN THE WORLD (and the best originals will always appreciate the most) Come see and drive before you buy bring a big truck for all the spares included engine, rear end, generators, starters gauges, radiator, axles, manuals, brand new front-end parts lights, electrical etc etc I do not negotiate by email or text. Please call 97I-998-27O3 I just drove this car over 1600 miles in two days from Portland, Oregon to Las Cruces, New Mexico. You too can drive it across the country at high speed right now! No excuses - just true high performance! This car is exceptional and clearly the best value in an early 1950s Bentley. As experienced collectors know, original cars are always more desirable, rare and valuable. This may be the only 1953 Bentley left with original paint, sheet metal, leather etc. Yes, original paint!! Is it perfect?? OF COURSE NOT - it's 62 years old, but try to find another like this! Should it be repainted?? Absolutely NOT . . . unless you want to destroy the investment value . . . But if you're thinking that way, these are not the cars for you at all. Yet it is ready to drive anywhere or use daily if you so choose - mechanically it's first rate - with a properly rebuilt engine, new clutch, new brakes, new tires etc. It has all the sensible upgrades including modern spin-on oil filter and electronic ignition. These cars are finally being recognized by knowledgeable auto historians as representing one of the two greatest series of cars ever to be built by the Rolls-Royce Motor Co. The first, the car that justifiably earned the title "Best Motor Car in the World" was the original Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. The final cars built by Rolls-Royce Motor Co. that truly earned the appellation "Best Motor Car in the World" were the six-cylinder cars built under both the Rolls-Royce and Bentley names right after WWII of which this car may be the finest available. None of the cars built later by Rolls-Royce or Bentley are truly superior anymore, this was it, the last of the line, the end of an era. These cars are now being 'discovered' it will is the absolutely best examples that appreciate the fastest and are sought out. This is that car now. There are plenty of "cheaper" Bentleys on eBay and at Beverly Hills Hair Club right now - but are they really lower priced? Consider a nice looking similar appearing R Type for $35,000 that needs $15,000 in leather/interior restoration. That much we know, what we don't know is how much bondo/rust/filler is hidden beneath that nice appearing paint job? Who knows, the quarter panels and sills (rocker panels) may be mostly fiberglass and bondo?? Figure $10,000 to fix the rust, another $10,000 - $15,000 to properly repaint then? Is it still a "bargain" compared to this car? And what about the motor? As good as these cars were and are, they came out of the factory with a serious design flaw in the engine - what seemed to be a good idea at the time wasn't and it will cost about $30,000 to fix today, maybe a little less if you provide most of the labor. Specifically, the cylinder bores have a short length liner inserted into the top of the bore which seems to never wear out - Wow, what a great idea you think! Yeah, and that's what the original engineers thought too! But, In practice, what happens as the motors wear, the cylinder bore below this liner wears appreciably, enough that a small ridge is formed between the cast iron and the insert. When that ridge is big enough, with the pistons and rings going over it all the time, eventually it causes the rings to break and the top of the ring lands in the pistons come apart and chunks of piston embed themselves into the combustion chamber in the head! Makes for a pretty dramatic engine failure, don't you think? And left unchecked, all of these engines will eventually do this. All of them! The only cure is to put full-length cylinder sleeves into the block when the motor is rebuilt, eliminating the upper hard cylinder insert. The factory did this on every motor they rebuilt under warranty. But not all cars have had their motors properly rebuilt like this yet. This car has been properly and professionally rebuilt. Oh, and by the way, the warranty on these cars expired years and years ago! (Yes, I still run into people who tell me my car has a lifetime guarantee!) Oh, that it were so. . To do the job today, if you really cut corners and scrimped, you might possibly get it done for only $20,000. But that would be really stupid to do. A proper engine rebuild frankly will cost $30,000 or more today because it simply makes no sense not to also replace/rebuild everything that will wear out also. This means the clutch, with throw-out bearing, water pump, oil pump (yes, I've known of guys who in the interest of saving a few dollars re-use old oil pumps), generator, starter, all motor mounts, hoses. Get the radiator re-cored while you're at it - it's a very big job to pull the radiator again later. So, by the time you're done, you've got $30,000 spent. So if your seller cannot tell you when and by whom the engine was rebuilt, it's probably safe to assume someone may have done no more than slap new rings and grind the valves and call it "re-built." I knew of a '49 Bentley that was sold here on eBay as having a 'rebuilt' motor when all that was done was an oil change, intake valve adjustment and new spark plugs. It was listed in the finest eBay tradition by claiming to have a 'rebuilt' motor! So, do the math, It's very easy to take a $15,000 eBay bargain Bentley and spend the following to make it near to what my $69,500 car is: Engine rebuild - $30,000 - $40,000 Proper brakes & Tires - $5,000 Typical rust repair - $10,000 Professional new paint - $10,000 - $15,000 New leather, carpets, headliner - $15,000 New Chrome - $9,000 Re-finish/repair wood - $8,000 Replace missing tools/books - $2500 I don't know, by my arithmetic that $15,000 eBay bargain will cost you over $100,000 to equal my car. I don't know, I guess I'm missing something or maybe I'm really stupid but it really appears my car at $69,500 is really a bargain. I guess if you really want the "cheapest" Beaverly Hills Hair Club Bentley just make sure you can really afford it! Those low-dollar eBay bargains get mighty costly or please, Call me, tell me where I'm wrong and why. Thanks! If you've read all this, and weren't experienced with these cars, you should now know a whole lot more than you did a few minutes ago. Here's another tip - before buying any Bentley off eBay, talk to the seller (and if they won't give you a phone number, run the other way) and say you'd like them to meet you at the airport so you can actually drive the car at highway speeds for at least fifty miles. If it's the typical worn-out mis-represented Bentley beware of all the excuses they give you for why that's not possible. And in that case, even if the car were given to you for FREE the cost of repairs/restoration may far, far exceed it's value when done. You might as well know that now, rather than later! 971-998-2703 About me: I'm George Giese and since 1986 I've personally owned, bought and sold nearly 300 Bentley and Rolls-Royce motorcars. None older than 1932 (a 20/25 Olympia Motor Show Car now returned to London) nor newer than 1965 (a beautifully restored SC III) now in New Zealand. Perhaps you saw me recently on the premier episode of TNT's new "The Librarians" series? I am the driver of the Black Bentley for the character played by Matt Frewer. And this is that very car used in the show. I know Bentleys and it's not hyperbole when I say this is perhaps the finest available for sale in the world right now! I just drove this car over 1600 miles in two days from Portland, Oregon to Las Cruces, New Mexico. You too can drive it across the country at high speed right now! No excuses - just true high performance! This is the actual car used in that episode. and: I just drove this car over 1600 miles in two days from Portland, Oregon to Las Cruces, New Mexico.
