DESCRIPTION OF AUCTION ITEM: THIS IS A 2013 BMW K 1600 GTL. THIS BIKE IS PERFECT EVERYWHERE AND WAS TRADED IN BY A GUY FROM OUR LOCAL AIR FORCE BASE. THIS BIKE HAS NO SCRATCHES AND IS PERFECT EVERYWHERE YOU LLOK ON IT. THIS IS NO DIFFERENT THAN BUYING A BIKE OFF THE SHOWRROM FLOOR EXCPET ITS ALOT CHEAPER. THE TIRES ARE PERFECT, IT DOES HAVE ABS AND NAV AND ALL BAGS WORK PERFECT AND IT RUNS OUT LIKE A DREAM BELOW ARE SOME SPECIFICATIONS ON THIS BIKE. The BMW K1600GTL is a luxury mega-tourer. It falls into that category of bikes that has next to zero relevance to me at this point in my riding life cycle, as I've got no current plans to circumnavigate Australia or have a crack at the Saddlesore 1000. And yet I've actually been hanging out to get my hands on one of these things, because it features what I'd call the single coolest innovation I've seen on a motorcycle since I first put aside my prejudices and felt just how good the Piaggio MP3 tilting 3-wheeler is to ride. It's the second coolest thing I've thrown a leg over this week. We'll get to the headlight later. To start with, the GTL is a bit of a beast when it comes to basic specs. It starts with a 1649cc, inline 6-cylinder engine block that by all rights should make the bike a barrel-chested brute of a thing like Honda's old CBX. Except that it doesn't. Despite more than a whole supersport bike's worth of extra engine capacity, the K1600 engine barely makes itself noticed poking out of the fairings. You'd easily mistake it for a K1300 4-cylinder job if it didn't have a big chrome 6 on it, and BMW tout it as the lightest and narrowest 6-cylinder engine ever mass produced for a liter-plus motorbike. Tilted forward at a slightly odd-looking 50 degrees, the motor produces a healthy 158 horsepower and a stonking 175 newton-meters of torque, while revving out to around 8500 rpm. That's more than enough to make light work of the GTL's 348 kg wet weight – pulling power simply never feels like an issue and I'd happily hook up a caravan if I couldn't already make camp in the huge luggage allotment. K1600GT vs K1600GTL The GTL is the luxury upgrade to the K1600GT. As such it features slightly altered ergonomics for a more upright riding stance, and a standard top-box with built in passenger backrest. I didn't personally get along so well with the seating position, I found it made me slump a bit – but that's very much a personal thing. For reference, I'm a shade under 6 foot and weigh around 110 kg. None of the passengers I took out on the GTL had any complaints whatsoever. They're looked after with a big wide seat, nice chunky footrests and that most effective of selling points, the sturdy, reliable backrest. The luggage is enormous and spacious. Each of the removable side panniers will fit an XL helmet with room to spare, and you can fit two more lids in the top box. The top box is also removable, although you have to rummage around underneath all your stuff to get to the latch. There's also another two small compartments in the side fairings big enough for phones, wallets and the like – one of them has a built-in USB charger with an iPhone connection. Each of the luggage compartments opens at the touch of a button, and since there's so many, BMW has endowed the K1600GTL with central locking off the key fob so you can lock and unlock them all at once. Audio system The GTL also comes with a standard audio system (pretty much every extra on the GTL bar the ergonomics are options on the GT) that's nicely integrated into the bike's multi-control menu and operable off a toggle and scroll wheel on the left handlebar that's quite nice to use once you get the hang of it. The stereo on our test bike came pre-set on our local hits and memories station – and that felt pretty much spot on, so that's where it stayed. The audio system shares is also integrated with the in-dash, touch screen GPS, and can also plug into an iPhone or other USB audio player, complete with the ability to choose tracks directly through the dashboard menu. And if that wasn't enough, the whole thing is Bluetooth enabled so that if your tunes are lost in the wind noise of freeway riding, you can pipe them straight into your Bluetooth helmet. Bodacious. I'm not usually the kind of rider that likes listening to music as I go, but I thought I'd give it a go. The stereo adjusts its volume to account for wind noise as you speed up, and it sounds great around town. But at freeways speeds it gets pretty difficult to hear through a full face lid. And it's also easy to forget you're on a motorbike – I pulled up and parked outside a university campus at one point and wondered why everyone was staring at me … it took a minute to remember that it's not normal for motorcycles to blast "Money for Nothing" at ear-splitting volumes. Whoops. Other gadgetry BMW makes a good argument for consideration as the most technology-forward motorcycle company in the world. And the K1600GTL is more or less its technology flagship. So here's a quick rundown of some other gadgets it features that you wouldn't ordinarily find on your motorcycle: Fully electronic cruise control – I can't stress enough how lovely it is to have a good cruise system on a bike. You can rest your wrists on the highway, or just use it to keep yourself under your local area's idiot-friendly speed limits. Electronically operated suspension – this makes quite a noticeable difference. Set on "comfort" you can enjoy a nice soft ride that cushions the bumps on a highway very nicely but decks out the centerstand fairly early if you try to ride it hard. Pop it on sport, and the whole thing firms itself up to let you turn much more aggressively in the twisties. Tyre pressure warning system – over the years I've developed the ability to tell when my bikes are maybe 4-5psi down on tire pressure. This system takes away the need. Electrically adjustable touring screen – honestly, this is one of the most annoying features of this bike for me. I don't like screens much at the best of times, but the GTL's is a shocker. You have to drop it all the way down if you want to see the road surface in front of you clearly, but when you do, it forces a lumpy stream of buffeting wind right at your helmet. Raise it up higher and the buffeting wind disappears, but you have to look at the road through a curved bit of perspex, and it also creates a slight negative air pressure hole that draws your upper body forward at freeway speeds. There's probably an aftermarket fix out there but I spent a lot of time fiddling with the switch that I could have spent concentrating on other stuff. Switchable engine mappings, ABS and traction control – almost not worth a mention given how common these features are becoming on modern motorcycles, but all three systems work well here. Unfortunately it's a bit of a slog to go and turn off the traction control if you want to chuck a wheelie – but that's probably for the best. The ride You've doubtless read a tonne of other megatourer reviews that praise the way these behemoths handle once they're moving – and this is a fantastic example. At 348 kg (767 lbs), there's no getting around the fact that the GTL is a handful to push around. You'd better think about where you park it, and if you end up nosed into a downhill parking spot, you may well need help to get the big bugger out. Slip the clutch and get it moving though, and from walking pace upward the big K handles beautifully. At low speeds it's responsive and maneuverable enough to do figure-8s on, or dodge around blockages while you're lane-splitting in stopped traffic. Credit for the K1600GTL's superb steering has to go at least partially to Norman Hassock – BMW basically out-waited the patent life of the Hossack front end suspension system and re-branded it as "Duolever." It works superbly to deliver pinpoint-sharp steering at all speeds, to eliminate front-end dive under braking and maintain constant steering geometry under all conditions. Riding the GTL hard in the twisties, you're certainly aware you're on a weighty bike – particularly when you have to pull up hard from high speed for a corner entry. But the big ABS brakes are up for the job, and the bike's steering is light as a feather at all times, so it's actually a pleasure to play, even if its performance envelope is well down on sportier machines. Firing it out of turns is also quite a pleasure thanks to the surprisingly loud and throaty engine roar that develops when you wind the K1600 up – and there's muscle aplenty to trouble the traction control as you do. I will note that the GTL suffers a little from what I'd term overapplication of the luxury brush. I don't like it in cars either – there's a big difference between the immediacy and responsiveness and instant feedback of a sportscar, and the soft, neutered, unmechanical feel through the pedal of some luxury cars. In the K1600GTL, this manifests as a vagueness through the clutch lever that makes it difficult to find the clutch point, and a weird sense of disconnection between the throttle and the engine. It might add a touch of "class" to the feel of the ride, but I didn't appreciate stalling this giant thing more than a dozen times, often in embarrassing places. And I'm not a bloke that normally stalls bikes. The Headlights And now, with all that riding around rubbish out of the way, we get to the best bit. The K1600 series is the first in the world to feature an optional adaptive headlight that freakin' looks around the corners when you tip in. Here's the problem – headlights are designed to illuminate as much of the road in front of you as possible, but without shining directly in the eyes of other road users coming the other way. So they cut off with a horizontal line. Of course, when you lean a motorbike into a turn, that horizon line tilts with the bike, putting the side that you're turning towards downward and basically ensuring that you can't see where you're going: SHIPPING FREE SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE LOWER CONTIGUOUS 48 STATES. OWN A PIECE OF MOTORCYCLE HISTORY !This is a limited production "Tuber", one of the last hand assembled by a few of Erik Buell's expert team in East Troy Wisconsin, back in the early days, only 384 were made this first year of the S3T in 1997. American Muscle, made in USA. Very light but strong hand laid fiberglass fender, fairing, gas tank, and rear tail section. Once Harley took over Buell in 1998, the expensive to make fiberglass components all went to mass production cheap ABS plastic. Ducati style hand crafted chrome-moly perimeter frame, Performance Machine front and Brembo rear calipers, and inverted WP forks. Corbin seat ($500), D&D Racing carbon fiber exhaust cannister ($500), lightweight quick release lockable luggage ($1500 option), new sport touring tires; front IRC ProTech SP-11F, rear Metzeler RoadTech Z6 ($400), newer AGM battery ($100) , newer front brakes, new rear brakes. That's already $3000 in stuff without even mentioning the rest of the bike. USA bidders only. MODEL YEARS PRODUCED 97-98, 00-02 APPROX. NUMBER BUILT 1,779 1997 = 384 1998 = 630 1999 = NIL 2000 = 349 2001 = 164 2002 = 252 Displacement: 1203cc 91HP@5800RPM Torque: 87 ft.lbs @ 5,200 rpm Bought it in September 2012 with 14665 miles, as a third bike that I always wanted, and have only put on a thousand miles in three years. Originally I was going to completely refreshen the bike to showroom condition...someday...well guess its time for a new owner. Another "Bueller" enthusiast would be perfect. Starts and runs excellent, it is tuned and piped for 100HP like the later Thunderstorm motor but without the troublesome head and cylinder gasket issues of the 1998 and later models. Has always been run on Mobil One synthetic 15w50. Primary chain and belt drive tension adjusted, valves are maintenance free hydraulic pushrods, self adjusting. Carburetor has been re-jetted for performance. Rear end lowered two inches for better comfort, can easily be redone to original. Handles incredible, upright sitting position and pretty comfortable in the saddle overall. I added rubber gel grips to smooth out some hand vibration. Bike is very light, only around 450lbs, top speed around 130 in under a minute for those adrenaline junkies. The luggage black tubing frame is one piece and removes in minutes for a very sport bike look, tail fender was also clipped by previous owner for a very clean modern look. Its imperfect, if it was showroom the value would be $5,000. It was almost $14,000 new in 1997. This rare Thunderbolt ST3 needs some small cosmetic details finished; gas tank ovals were going to be airbrushed with the new Pegasus Buell symbols, some small paint bubbles on gas tank, left foot peg rubber end is broken off, some scratches on saddle bags. Fairing leg lowers missing, removed for better cooling. Upper plastic belt drive cover missing, removed for easy drive belt inspection. Custom made license plate bracket, nice, but not original. Bonus: BUY IT NOW winner will also receive two authentic Buell saddlebag liners which are worth $200 (not pictured), they are no longer available from Buell and nearly impossible to find. Keep in mind Ebay charges $125 to the seller (me), so if you can come see it in person, cash in pocket will get a better deal. I am near the Pittsburgh Airport, fly in, I will pick you up, ride home. Its reliable enough to ride cross country on any given day. Everything works as it should. It's listed for sale local so I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. An outdoor fabric cover is included if needed. I have many other photos if you request, apologies for the poor quality. Mileage will go up slightly as I still ride it every week. Also I am open to trading my Buell Thunderbolt plus cash to anyone who has an adventure type bike I can occasionally ride off road; like a Buell Ulysses, Triumph Tiger, BMW, KTM, Husqvarna, etc. Unlike most motorcycles, consider this one an investment rather than an expense. The value goes up slightly every year instead of down, and in 2017, at twenty years, will appreciate even faster as a classic. (nice unedited article below for those curious about Buells. Here in Pittsburgh, where Erik Buell grew up, worked as a motorcycle mechanic, and attended the University of Pittsburgh; Buells are LEGEND.) THE 1999 BUELL S3 THUNDERBOLTBy Chuck Hawks Thunderbolt! That is the only way to understand this motorcycle. I had looked at Buell motorcycles, especially the top of the line S3 Thunderbolt, almost every time I visited my local Harley-Davidson dealer, but I never understood these motorcycles until I finally took a test ride. That is what the Buell motorcycles are all about: the ride. There are fancier, plainer, costlier, cheaper, prettier, homelier, faster, slower, lighter, heavier, bigger, and smaller motorcycles available, but in all my years of riding I have never ridden anything like a Buell. That also seems to be the opinion of the Buell owners I have talked to, including those who have owned a variety of expensive (read Italian) sport bikes. Speaking of which, Harley's investment in Buell appears to be paying off. Last year (1998), Buell outsold all of the other "specialty sport bikes" (a term which, I believe, excludes the regular production of the Japanese Big Four) in the U.S. except Ducati, who managed to stay in first place by the slimmest of margins. This year, Buell expects to outsell Ducati and take over the number one spot. As I write this, in 1999, the Buell line of Vee-twin sport bikes consists of three models. There is the surprisingly economical M2 Cyclone, the X1 Lightning street fighter, and the sport or sport-touring oriented S3 Thunderbolt. All exhibit similar, but not identical, styling and performance, and all three are powered by a modified Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 motor. All three are sporty motorcycles designed to get you off the line and down the road quickly, with the maximum amount of fun. Real world performance is the forte' of these bikes, and not much can catch them on the road. Like all Buells, but unlike most other sport and sport-touring bikes, the engine of the S3 is left open to view. There is no bodywork to hide that big powerplant. The visible V-twin motor is probably the easiest way to identify a Buell American Motorcycle. In a world of look-alike sport bikes, nothing else looks like a Buell. Because I am a fan of the sport-touring concept, the Thunderbolt S3T is the Buell for me. All Thunderbolts feature a frame mounted sport fairing designed to protect the rider and gas tank (without obscuring the motor), You get to pick from a variety of color combinations for the Thunderbolt. My favorite color scheme for 1999 is the "Molten Orange" (fairing, tank, and tail section) with "Nuclear Blue" (frame and wheels) color scheme. Hey, there's safety in conspicuity! I recommend the S3T touring package. This includes touring handlebars, fairing lowers, two fitted soft storage bags for the fairing, an underseat tote bag (perfect for a toolkit, and not much else), and the newly improved, color coordinated, detachable, hard saddlebags, which come with fitted removable liners. The saddle bags come with your choice of deep (read bulky) or narrow (read trim) covers. Although the deep covers will swallow a full face helmet, I prefer the sleeker and more attractive narrow covers, a triumph of form over function. The other covers can be ordered separately later, if it becomes necessary. I don't have much use for the color matched fairing lowers, included in the S3T touring package, because they trap even more of the already excessive heat generated by the big 74 cubic inch engine throbbing within inches of the rider's legs, and detract from the bike's appearance. Also, they are fairly flimsy (the body parts of these bikes are designed to be light in weight) and stick out to the sides, and are therefore liable to damage if the bike falls over in a parking lot mishap (or something similar). Fortunately, they are designed to be easily removed. Two options available only from the aftermarket (as I write this) are a taller "touring" windshield, and thicker, softer, gel handgrips (is anybody at Buell taking notes?). Buell does offer an excellent tank bag, which I recommend. The result is a sport-touring bike from the sporty end of the spectrum. Other neat features of the Thunderbolt include a chrome-moly tubular perimeter frame, digital electronic fuel injection (which eliminates the hassle of a fuel tank petcock, as well as a choke), hydraulic self-adjusting valve lifters, electronic ignition, belt drive, stainless steel header pipes, fully adjustable suspension with inverted front forks and a rear mono shock which operates in extension, aluminum arc swingarm, hollow 3-spoke cast wheels, "Z" rated radial tubeless tires, superb brakes, completely sealed maintenance-free battery, halogen headlight with an adjustment knob in the fairing, excellent fairing mounted mirrors (you actually see the traffic behind you, instead of your arms), European passing lamp flasher (a little trigger on the left handlebar controls that flashes the high beam), and folding footpegs. About all that is missing is self-canceling turn signals (Dear Buell representative: please note). All 1999 Buells come with a much improved dual seat, and I am happy to report that the new, wide, Thunderbolt seat is adequately comfortable for solo commuting and Sunday rides. I have not taken any long trips, so I cannot comment on its suitability for serious touring. A drawback to the wider seat is that it is a longer reach to the ground than it used to be from the old, uncomfortable but narrower, version. The factory specification says the seat height is 29.5 inches, but they must have measured it with the suspension at both ends set to the lowest possible setting, and the tires flat. It feels higher than that. The Thunderbolt would not be my first choice, given my 30 inch inseam, for a lot of complicated parking lot maneuvers. Nor is it a particularly good bike for riding with a passenger. The bike is somewhat top heavy to start with, and this top heavy feeling is aggrivated by a seat that puts the passenger too high and too far back. If you ride two up a lot, a Buell may not be the bike for you. After mentioning the new seat, I should mention that I find the rider's seating position quite comfortable. An average size rider is postioned in a relaxed position with a slight froward lean. It is better, in my opinion, than the seating position on a BMW R 1100RS sport-tourer, or a Triumph Thunderbird Sport (bikes with which it might reasonably be compared). The location of the rider's footpegs, in particular, is very good. So is the height and reach of the touring handlebar. The layout of the handlebar controls and switches is conventional, and easy to learn. Mounted in the dash are a large tach and speedo, plus a surprisingly useful quartz clock. Also on the dash are a variety of idiot lights, including a handy low fuel warning light which illuminates when .4 gallon of petrol remains. The large 5.4 gallon fuel tank means 225-265 miles (on average) before the low fuel warning light comes on. This is outstanding range, greater than that offered by most luxury touring bikes. On a recent 205 mile Saturday ride from Eugene to Sisters and back, involving both the old and new Mckenzie Highways over Oregon's Cascade Mountains, I actually averaged 59.94 miles per gallon. That would mean approximately 300 miles from a full tank of gas before the low fuel light comes on! More complete technical specifications for all of the Buells, and many other top sport bikes, can be found in the "Sport Motorcycle Comparison Chart," on my Travel page. The only area that needs improvement, to make the Thunderbolt a decent touring bike, is rider protection. The factory supplied windshield is pure sport bike. Combined with the smallish fairing, it offers good protection for the torso, none for the hands, and directs the slipstream coming over the windshield about at the chinbar of the rider's helmet. This is tolerable on a Sunday sport ride, but fatiguing on a long freeway ride. I fitted a Rifle brand replacement windshield 17 inches tall (the only aftermarket replacement I could find) and while this represents a marginal improvement, it is far from ideal. The factory windshield is very short, about 13 inches, and angled at what appears to be less than 45 degrees above the horizontal. The Rifle replacement is angled almost bolt upright, and still too low. The wind collapses behind and around this windshield, and hits the rider in the face and shoulders. It is marginally better than the factory windshield, in that you are being hit in the face by broken air (I believe the aerodynamic term is "burble"), rather than the almost laminar airflow off the factory windshield. Faint praise, to be sure, since at speed the rider's head is still continually buffeted by the wind. If I lay over the tank, the Rifle windshield provides excellent protection--but who wants to ride a long distance laying over the tank? What is needed is a windshield taller than the Rifle version by about 5 inches, and angled back at about 60 degrees. This would put it somewhere between the excessively upright stance of the Rifle windshield, and the very swept-back angle of the factory windshield, and hopefully it would send the slipstream over the rider's head. Certainly a competent designer, with a little practice, could produce a satisfactory touring windshield for the Thunderbolt fairing. It has been done for plenty of other motorcycles. It is no secret that Buell motorcycles have had something of a "kit bike" reputation. After all, Eric Buell originally started building them in his garage. (Bill Harley and the Davidson brothers started the same way, back in 1903.) Everyone agreed that they were a blast to ride, but niggling problems like cracks in ultra light body parts, excessive heat radiating from the engine and exhaust pipes, broken engine mounts, uncomfortable seats, saddle bag latches that didn't work, and similar problems have drawn criticism, and rightly so. The 1999 models are the first since Harley-Davidson acquired 98% of Buell American Motorcycles. Eric Buell remains in charge, and still owns 2% of the stock. Harley had previously owned half of the company, with Buell owning the other half. The changes allowed by Harley's deep pockets are apparent. Everything has been improved, including the frame, engine mounts, fuel injection, front forks, swingarm, rear monoshock, seat, handlebar controls, the S-3 fairing, the S3 saddlebags, and more. Unfortunately, work remains to be done to eliminate the small, niggling problems to which the bikes are still prone. Judging by my experience with the S3, build quality still does not appear to be as good as a Harley-Davidson. In fact, it is probably below that of an average Japanese motorcycle, not really bad, but not perfect. There is no assembly line at the Buell factory. Each motorcycle is built individually, by a small team of workers, who work only on that particular bike until it is finished. This system yields great job satisfaction, high employee morale, a lot of promise for the future, and motorcycles that are maybe a little less uniform than they might otherwise be. Before founding Buell American Motorcycles, Eric Buell worked as an engineer for Harley-Davidson. Based on what I have read about Eric Buell, the most basic ingredients of his design philosophy seem to be centralization of mass, low unsprung weight, and frame rigidity. Let's take a quick look at these concepts, because they are central to why a Buell is so much fun to ride. I am no engineer, but as a sailor I am familiar with the benefits of mass centralization. A boat designed with the weight concentrated in the center, instead of out at the ends, will respond more quickly. It will tend to ride over, rather than plow through, the waves. Two people with access to a small skiff, dinghy, or rowboat can experiment with this concept. First, have one person sit in the very bow, and the other at the stern. Note how the boat feels sluggish and responds slowly to the waves. Now move both people (the mass) to the middle of the boat. Suddenly it feels more lively, and responds faster, now that the mass is centralized. The same basic principle also holds true for motorcycles. This is why Buell concentrates the weight of the heavy components of the motorcycle, the engine/transmission, muffler, gas tank, rear monoshock, and battery near the center of the motorcycle. Everything is basically placed above or below the engine/transmission unit, the heaviest single component of the motorcycle. The result is that Buell motorcycles feel exceptionally lively, and a lively motorcycle is more fun to ride. Unsprung weight is the weight of the components not supported by the suspension, principally the wheels, tires, lower fork legs, and brakes. Lower unsprung weight allows the tires to maintain better contact with the uneven surface of the road, thus making for a safer, better controlled, and more enjoyable ride. Buell uses hollow 3-spoke alloy wheels of the lightest and most rigid type for all of their models. For the Thunderbolt, Buell uses expensive Showa inverted front forks. Inverted forks put the smaller diameter fork section on the bottom, which lowers unsprung weight. They are also extremely strong, and more rigid than conventional telescopic forks. Going further to eliminate as much unsprung weight as possible, the Thunderbolt has a single stainless steel floating front brake disc, rather than the dual discs found on almost all other specialty sport bikes. Brake discs and their associated calipers are very heavy. To ensure adequate swept area, that single disc is the largest found on any production bike, 340mm in diameter. To make it lightweight while retaining the necessary thickness in cross section, it is extremely narrow in profile, and to ensure an excess of stopping power, the Thunderbolt comes with a 6-piston front brake caliper. "Stoppies" are easy on a Buell. Other premium motorcycle manufacturers can and do take some of these same steps to lower unsprung weight, but none combine all of these strategies as Buell does. Almost everyone agrees that a rigid frame is crucial to precise handling and control. Buell selected the expensive but effective method of using chrome-moly alloy steel tubing to build a perimeter frame with triangulated sections. Buell calls it a "geodesic perimeter frame." In the best modern fashion, the engine serves as a stressed member of the frame. The result is an exceptionally light and stiff frame, which improves handling and control. A bike that handles precisely and delivers exceptional control is more fun to ride. The centralized mass, low unsprung weight , stiff frame, and premium suspension, when combined with a rather short 55 inch wheelbase and only 24.5 degrees of front-end rake, should result in a light and quick handling motorcycle, and indeed it does. You might think the same combination would also make for a twitchy feeling motorcycle, but it doesn't. I expected, and found, a fast handling bike, but what I found most surprising was the Thunderbolt's excellent static stability. Static stability means that left to its own devices, it will run straight. This is a bike that will run straight as a die with the rider's hands off the handlebar. I guess the 3.8 inches of trail has something to do with that. Whatever the reason, the bike responds quickly, handles superbly, and runs true. Of course, more than trick engineering is necessary to build a complete motorcycle. The motor is the key to performance, and all Buells use a highly modified Harley-Davidson Sportster V-twin engine. The hot-rodded 1203cc "Thunderstorm" power plant used in the Thunderbolt produces an ample 101 horsepower at the crankshaft, and a gut wrenching 90 ft. lbs. of torque. This translates to about 71-78 ft. lbs. of torque and 85-90 hp. at the rear wheel, depending on whose dyno you read. Remember that horsepower is a measurement of work performed over time, and torque is the turning force at the crankshaft (or rear wheel). This is why torque is more important in everyday riding. Torque is what is responsible for that slingshot feeling when you roll the throttle on, not to mention those "power" wheelies. The vibration produced by the compact 45 degree V-twin motor is isolated from the frame, and the rider, by Buell's proprietary "Uniplanar" mounting system. This system works. It is amazing to ride a bike, powered by what is basically a Sportster 1200 engine, that is so smooth. At idle it feels about like a Sportster, but as the RPM increases, vibration diminishes. By the time the tach has moved past 3000 RPM, vibration is almost completely absent. The Sportster, as I wrote in my article "The Harley-Davidson Sportster," is quite pleasant to ride below about 60 MPH (in 5th gear). But vibration intrudes as speeds increase, and becomes uncomfortable (to me) by about 70 MPH. But on its cousin, the Buell Thunderbolt, the faster you go the smoother it gets. At 70 MPH and above, it is uncannily smooth. It is hard to believe it is powered by a Sportster 1200 motor, let alone one producing about a third more power. It seems to me that the Thunderbolt is a pretty good sport-touring bike, by which I mean a great sport bike for Sunday rides, with its power and razor sharp handling, that still has the capability of making overnight and longer trips. It has the range, speed, smoothness, stability, comfortable seating position, and available luggage to serve as a solo touring bike, plus the benefit of a very extensive dealer network should something go wrong while on the road (a good point to consider before purchasing some exotic brand sport-touring bike). Rider protection is the primary deficiency at present, but all it needs is a properly designed touring windshield to bring it up to snuff in that area. I hope that someone, either at Buell or in the aftermarket, will eventually respond to fill this need. If you want a sporty looking motorcycle for cheap transportation, there are more economical alternatives. But if you're leaning toward a sport or sport-touring bike, and ride for the pleasure of the experience, you owe it to yourself to at least test ride a Buell Thunderbolt.

A bike that goes beyond the wildest dreams of even the most hardcore enthusiasts - the rider who, given the chance, would use a race bike just to go for a coffee. For riders like these and for those with power in their veins, Aprilia has created a motorcycle with the indomitable spirit of the RSV4 with a streetfighter physique that is in its element when accelerating and braking with unimaginable violence, that eats up curves of any radius and swallows straights whole. The performance and features of a superbike, the agility of a naked and the legacy of an innovative concept born in 2002 with the Tuono 1000 R – a bike that earned both critical acclaim and sales success – but with an extraordinary ace up its sleeve: the performance of a 65° V4 engine and the most advanced electronics available in a motorcycle today. Like the original Tuono, the V4 is also immediately recognisable with its triple headlight fixed top fairing, the distinguishing trait of a bike which, like its twin cylinder predecessor, has the body and soul of its WSBK homologated sibling, but now - as well as having two world championships (the 2010 constructors' and riders' titles) under its belt - features two more cylinders and 41 horsepower more than before, while weighing over 22 pounds less. These astonishing figures are a testimony to the technological evolution that made this exciting model a reality. THE MOTORCYCLE With its 65° V4 engine brazenly flaunted and framed by the brushed aluminum twin spar frame, the Tuono V4 is a naked clad only with the bare minimum necessary to let you saddle up and teach it to respond to your will. Adding yet another touch of aggressiveness is the aerodynamic top fairing tipped with two polyelliptical headlights and LED indicators at the sharp end, which gives the bike the unequivocally mean, daunting stare that you'd expect from a machine with an incredible 167.3 horsepower. Tuono V4 boasts more power than ever seen before in a naked, achieved by reconfiguring the V4 engine of the RSV4 to make it better suited to street use.The features inherited by the Tuono V4 from the RSV4 include the exhaust system with bypass valve, which is two kilos lighter than the system used on the RSV4 R, and latest generation Ride by Wire throttle control with three rider-selectable maps (Track, Sport and Road). The first three gear ratios are now shorter, while the maximum torque (82 ft. lbs.) is on tap at 9,500 rpm: characteristics that make the Tuono V4 a wild beast at low and mid-engine speeds, with the ability to unleash a devastating hurricane of power at higher engine speeds. The Tuono V4 maintains a clear lineage with the SBK world champion, RSV4, in the proportions of the tail fairing, saddle, tank and side panels, and is one of the best examples of Italian motorcycle design from the past decade for its perfect balance between formal beauty and function. The rider benefits from a riding position tailored to create a symbiotic relationship between the body and the bike, for unparalleled feedback through the three points of contact - the saddle, footpegs and handlebars. On the Tuono V4 however, the rider sits with less weight on the arms, making the bike less strenuous to ride and extraordinarily nimble and controllable on the road. THE ENGINE The Tuono V4 is the only naked powered by the world championship-winning 65° V4 cylinder engine with unique characteristics. Extremely compact, as slim as a twin-cylinder and installed in an ultra-compact chassis, the 65° V4 engine is the epitome of Italian engineering ingenuity. The Tuono gives away very little to its RSV4 sibling in terms of pure performance, but in exchange offers a greater fluidity that make it more enjoyable and rewarding to ride on the road and when carrying a passenger. Power: 167.3 hp at 11,500 rpm Torque: 82 Ft. lbs at 9,500 rpm Rev limiter: 12,300 rpm in all gears To achieve these results, a number of different modifications were made to the Aprilia V4 engine: · New valve timing diagram · Fixed intake ducts now 20 mm longer · Crankshaft flywheel with increased inertia for improved smoothness and overall balance · Shortened gear ratios for the first three gears · Engine speed at maximum power reduced to 11,500 rpm on the Tuono V4 The Aprilia 65° V4 engine specifications in short: Engine capacity: 999.6 cc Architecture: 65° V4 Crankcase: monobloc with integrated crankcase liners Timing system: 4 valves per cylinder operated directly by a camshaft driven by a mixed chain/gear system (lateral timing chain and central gear train) Fuel system: electronic injection with a single injector per cylinder and integrated independent Ride by Wire system for each bank. Three maps selectable from the handlebar (Track, Sport and Road) Antivibration countershaft Compression ratio: 13:1 Gearbox: 6-speed direct-control cassette type gearbox Clutch: Multiplate wet clutch with mechanical slipper system Electronic management: Magneti Marelli control unit managing ignition, injection and Ride by Wire system The narrow V architecture translates into an engine that is incredibly compact in length, offering advantages in terms of mass centralisation and making it possible to define a chassis architecture centre of gravity that is both very low and almost perfectly centralised in the engine and vehicle for neutral, intuitive behaviour and maximum responsiveness on the road. The innovative valve timing system (with the chain camshaft driving only the intake camshaft, which in turn drives the exhaust camshaft via a single gear) has allowed the use of just 250 mm at the rear of the engine), especially in the area beneath the frame spars, which are thus much narrower than would otherwise be possible. The electronic management system is another example of the 65° V4 engine's technological supremacy. Full Ride by Wire technology eliminates any direct connection between the throttle grip and the throttle valves, which are entirely controlled by a latest generation Marelli control unit that also controls the ignition and the 4 injectors Each bank has a dedicated servo unit actuating its own two throttle bodies. This means that the aperture of the throttle valves and, as a consequence, the quantity of fuel injected can be controlled independently. Aprilia has refined power delivery control. This technology, adapted appropriately for the prevalently road based usage of the Tuono V4, offers immediately tangible benefits to the rider, with triple mapping (adjusting power delivery and maximum power) selectable directly from the handlebar allowing the character of the bike to be modified to suit the rider's personal riding style or the track conditions at any time. T - TRACK: All 167.3 hp of power available at the slightest twist of the throttle. S - SPORT: Smooth delivery, maximum power. Torque limited in all gears for fun yet less demanding riding. R - ROAD: Smooth delivery and power attenuated by 25% across the rev range. Greater usability in all conditions. Ideal for the city or wet road conditions. The transmission has also been designed to the meet most advanced criteria to offer the maximum performance possible. To underscore the racing soul of the 65° V4 engine, it is mated to a cassette gearbox with a wet sump lubrication system (with oil in the crankcase). The wet clutch features a mechanical slipper system for optimised engine braking torque control and stability under hard braking. The Aprilia APRC Electronics Package APRC is based on an automotive inertia sensor platform, with two gyrometers and two accelerometers allowing the engine ECU to determine the dynamic state of the motorcycle and control engine torque accordingly to help the rider exploit the full performance potential of the bike. The APRC electronics package on the Tuono V4 includes: · ATC (Aprilia Traction Control) With eight different traction control settings for in relation to turn angle and throttle aperture. The system has been tweaked to make the more conservative settings even more suitable for road use, while leaving the racing spirit of the less restrictive levels intact. · AWC (Aprilia Wheelie Control) Helps the rider maintain control by gradually bringing the front wheel back to the ground. AWC has been appropriately adapted for the different weight distribution of the Tuono V4. · AQS (Aprilia Quick Shift), Allows instantaneous upshifts without closing the throttle or using the clutch. Completing the suite of four functions is the most exhilarating of all: ALC (Aprilia Launch Control). · ALC (Aprilia Launch Control) - Simultaneously pressing both buttons on the joystick on the left hand handlebar arms the system, as confirmed by the specific message on the display. From this moment on, all 167 horsepower of the beast from Noale are ready to slingshot the Tuono V4 like a missile as soon as the rider releases the clutch, unleashing the astonishing power onto the tarmac through every available square millimeter of the 190/55 rear tyre. And tire size does not matter to APRC, as with its Calibrating function, it is the only system of its kind on the market capable of self-adapting to tire size. CHASSIS In keeping with the Aprilia tradition of creating state of the art chassis architectures, the aluminum frame of the Tuono V4 R exploits the strength and flexibility of cast and pressed elements in a structure that sets new benchmarks in terms of balance and dynamic efficiency. Unlike the previous generation twin cylinder Tuono 1000R, the frame developed for the Tuono V4 R has been completely revised with respect to the unit used in the RSV4 to maximise directional control and stability while maintaining the legendary safety and impeccable precision typical of Aprilia frames. This in turn led to new solutions in terms of chassis geometry, such as modifying the trail and lowering the engine in the frame to lower the centre of gravity, for exceptionally neutral behaviour and truly catlike high speed stability. This means that the Aprilia Tuono is not just a bike with devastating performance, but one whose greatest strength is precisely the incredible ease with which any rider can access its full potential. The swingarm also uses the same constructional technology as the frame and offers the same perfect balance between flexional and torsional stiffness to contribute to the extraordinary responsiveness of the Tuono V4 R. The unique construction technology of the frame and swingarm allows them both to proudly flaunt the naturally gleaming colour of brushed aluminium, yet another feature that is increasingly rare in production bikes that contributes to pure racing look of the Tuono V4. The Tuono V4 comes equipped with the best components available on the market. BRAKES AND WHEELS A state-of-the art Brembo brake system with radial calipers and 320 mm floating discs at the front and 220 mm at the rear. The three spoke aluminum wheels weigh 4.4 pounds less than the five spoke version. SUSPENSION A fully adjustable Sachs upside down front fork with 43 mm stanchions provides incredible feel no matter the riding situation. While a Sachs rear monoshock with separate piggy back nitrogen canister features adjustable spring preload, compression and rebound damping and length. You can modify the setup of the bike to suit different riding styles, roads and loads - including a passenger. TIRES The choice of dual-compound tires is new, with three different sizes approved for the rear wheel: the 190/55 tire fitted as standard may be replaced with a 200/55 or a 190/50 tire to explore the full performance potential of the bike.Technical InfoEngine: Aprilia longitudinal 65° V-4 cylinder, 4-stroke, liquid cooling system, double overhead camshafts (DOHC), four valves per cylinderFuel: Unleaded petrolBore x Stroke: 78 x 52.3 mmTotal displacement: 999.6 ccCompression ratio: 13:1Maximum power at the crank: 167.3 CV (123 kW) @ 11,500 rpmMaximum torque at the crank: 111.5 Nm @ 9,500 rpmFuel system: Airbox with front dynamic air intakes. 4 Weber-Marelli 48-mm throttle bodies with 4 injectors and latest generation Ride-by-Wire engine management. DORSODURO 750 ABS Developed in close collaboration with Aprilia Racing (the department of Aprilia responsible for thirty-seven world titles), the Dorsoduro 750 combines the best technology from the worlds of supersports and racing supermotards. The result is a distillation of performance and technology, a special, extreme, and elite motorcycle that is capable of elevating its rider to motorcycling excellence. To Stand Out. Always Developed in close collaboration with Aprilia Racing, Dorsoduro 750 ABS was designed by taking the best features of sports bikes and supermotards, producing a perfect combination of performance, technology and fun. Power, lightness and agility, but also directionality, responsiveness and steering precision are therefore its main characteristics. Aprilia Dorsoduro ABS has components, technical features and finish of the highest quality which contribute to the uniqueness of the project. For the entire Dorsoduro 750 range, as the Shiver 750 range and the automatic Mana 850 from Aprilia, 35 kW powered-down versions are also available, in compliance with the criteria of the new A2 license. The Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 is equipped with the best braking technology currently available. The front brakes feature 4-piston radial calipers, state-of-the-art for the motard market. The light weight, 320 mm wave discs ensure shorter than ever stopping distances. The bikes aggressive stopping power is emphasized by the mean look of the braking system, in keeping with the Dorsoduros overall styling. The rear brakes incorporate another wave disc, 240 mm in diameter this time, plus a single piston caliper. Both the front and rear brakes are fitted with aeronautical type metal braided brake lines to eliminate the sponginess associated with conventional rubber hoses and to deliver maximum braking precision. A sophisticated two channel Continental ABS system provides maximum active safety on the Dorsoduro 750. The ABS controller is specially calibrated to make full use of the Dorsoduros impressive braking power and tire grip on dry surfaces. Riders can therefore still enjoy this amazing fun bike to the full. ENGINE Numerous improvements have been made to the Aprilia 750 cc, 90 V twin engine, which now features mapping specially developed to bring out the Dorsoduros aggressive character. Improvements have been made to various areas of the749.9 cc engine with its bore and stroke of 92 x 56.4 mm. As a result the electronic and mechanical content of this V-twin engine sets new standards not only for engines of this size but for many far larger units too. The electronic engine management on the Dorsoduro 750s engine leads the field in technology and performance. The Dorsoduro features a second generation electronic throttle with Tri-Map selectable triple mapping. Three performance modes, Sport, Touring and Rain, can be selected from a switch on the handlebars (with the throttle closed for safety reasons). The Dorsoduro changes its character radically, depending on what mode you select. Sport mode gives you aggressive instant power; Touring mode gives you a smoother action, better suited to relaxed long distance riding; and Rain mode gives you ultimate safety slippery surfaces. The Tri-Map electronic throttle also means smoother, more consistent power thanks to more accurate and precise throttle control based on parameters including engine speed, gear selection, air flow, throttle position and temperature. Whatever mapping you select, the engine is always ready to deliver the best possible performance in terms of acceleration and rev range, giving you an amazingly satisfying and entertaining ride. The exhaust is made entirely from stainless steel. The collector pipes meet in a single silencer under the seat before splitting again into two tail pipes. The large volume of the exhaust system also aids engine breathing and boosts efficiency. Thanks to its advanced electronic and mechanical technology, the Aprilia V twin engine develops 92 HP at 8,750 rpm and a maximum torque of82 Nm at 4,500rpm. These figures enable the Dorsoduro to compete directly with motorcycles powered by far bigger engines. The Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 is also available, right from its introduction, in a restricted 25 kW version. The use of a ride-by-wire electronic throttle has allowed Aprilia to avoid cutting power right across the range, as happens with less advanced restricted versions. Instead, the power curve of the restricted Dorsoduro is identical to that of its full-power sister right up to the point where the permitted power limit is reached. The 25 kW Dorsoduro 750 therefore delivers far superior acceleration to the equivalent models of the competition, to the benefit of riding satisfaction and pleasure. FRAME: PERFECT BALANCE Aprilia motorcycles have always been acclaimed for the excellent chassis designs. The Dorsoduro 750is no exception, thanks to a chassis that makes it the best balanced and most effective bike of its type. The new Dorsoduro is easy and intuitive to ride despite its blistering performance. It is designed to be ridden at the limit under all conditions, to perform extreme power slides, and to blast out of bends under full power. The secret lies in an ultra-responsive chassis, whose ergonomics suit riders of all statures and allow you to take it to the limit and enjoy the thrills of a motorcycle built for pure entertainment. The frame incorporates all of Aprilia's vast racing experience, and makes full use of the latest mixed steel and aluminum designs derived from the world of Super motard World Championship racing. The top half of the frame is a tubular steel trellis. This is secured to generous aluminum side members by special high strength bolts. The resulting structure is extremely rigid and light weight, and provides the best possible means of harnessing the exuberant power of the Aprilia V90 engine while still communicating a strong impression of lightness, high technology and Italian style. Continuous co-operation between engine and frame designers has led to the perfection of high-tech, performance-oriented solutions and to total integration between engine and frame. The intelligent design solutions applied to Aprilia's V-twin engine have made it shorter than ever, permitting the development of a rational and efficient frame and a superbly agile and incredibly responsive motorcycle. The lateral position and acute angle of the rear monoshock has freed up the space needed to ensure optimum exhaust geometry without any increase in the bikes overall length, and without subjecting the monoshock to thermal stress. The aluminum swingarm is robust enough to withstand the asymmetric stresses generated by the lateral positioning of the rear suspension. The swingarm has been specially developed to satisfy the needs of a supermotard like the Dorsoduro 750, and combines excellent torsional rigidity with the elasticity needed for precision under acceleration and intuitive control under changing conditions. SUSPENSION: ABSOLUTE EFFECTIVENESS The optimal definition of suspension has always been the pride of Aprilia designers and the Aprilia test team. The 43 mm upside-down front fork with shell-cast feet has spring preload and hydraulic brake adjustable in extension. The lateral shock absorber with is directly hinged to the swingarm in a cantilever configuration and has adjustable spring preload and hydraulic return; the front and rear wheel travel is 160 mm, which is also in line with the superbike philosophy that requires effective and controlled but long stroke suspension. Both steering yokes are forged, the upper also anodized, as a demonstration of the excellent level of finish of the Dorsoduro. BRAKES: RACING TECHNOLOGY The 4-piston radial caliper front brake system represents the current state of the art for a bike of this segment. The 320 mm floating wave discs are lightweight, ensure shorter stopping distances and underline the aggressiveness of braking thanks an incisive cool look, in line with the overall style of the Dorsoduro 750 ABS. Also the 240 mm rear disc is "wave" and braked by a single piston caliper. Both the front and rear systems use braided metal aeronautical type hoses to ensure maximum performance, even under stress. A sophisticated two channel Continental ABS system increases the safety level of the bike. Its specific calibration lets you to take full advantage of the sporting character of the Dorsoduro 750. DESIGN: STYLE AT THE SERVICE OF FUN Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 ABS is a project that focuses on the rider, a slim and agile bike, in which each element is designed to achieve the maximum riding pleasure. Superstructures are kept to a minimum, the design of the central area highlights the compactness of the bike, while the tail, compact and curvy, includes the dual exhaust, to the benefit of correct weight distribution. This 2014 350 XC-F has been a dealership demo for the past few months and ridden by one of our retired Air Force buddies for about four races in the +40 B class of the recently completed Texas State Enduro Championship circuit. He ran a Rekluse clutch which has been removed and replaced with the factory original clutch and clutch cover. This bike is in great condition, has a flashy look with the custom graphics and really has very little wear. The rear fender has a scratch and that is the most noticeable item.
