If you have any trouble viewing the slideshow above, please be sure to click on the thumbnail image below to view the web-album with all 33 super-sized photos of this bike: 1938 BMW replica sidecar motorcycle CJ-750 I am the second owner of this nearly exact clone of a 1938 BMW R-71 motorcycle with side-car, just like the German Military used during World War II. A little known fact is that Harley Davidson ALSO copied this BMW design and built a hand full (nearly identical to this bike, except with a springer front fork setup) for the US Military called the Harley XA. None were sold as civilian motorcycles, although they eventually wound up in civilian hands, & are highly sought-after collector’s items. They had this same horizontally-opposed engine configuration and were NOT a transversely mounted V-twin like the rest of Harley’s motorcycles. The U.S. Military even commissioned Delco Corporation (GM?) to build one in a Servi-Car Trike configuration. Indian also copied the BMW design, and built a model called the 841, all with this same style frame & shaft-drive design (a revolutionary idea in the '30s and '40s)! I know it's unbelievable, but you can do a Google Image search to see pictures of all of the above mentioned configurations. Later, the Russian companies Ural & Dnepr acquired the molds from Germany after the two countries signed a non-aggression pact. These motorcycles continued to be built using the original BMW designs until 1950 when Russia put all the molds & dies onto a train, and sent them to the People's Republic of China allegedly as a gift of Communist solidarity. Production resumed under the name CJ-750 which is the brand of this particular motorcycle for sale (CJ stands for the Chang Jiang Aircraft Company, & 750 designates the engine’s displacement). They continued to be built the same way up until 2010, so parts are still quite readily & inexpensively available on eBay & various sites on the internet, which is one of the best things about owning one of these bikes! Some sources say that this is likely the most common motorcycle on the face of the planet… it’s just that extremely few of them ever made it onto U.S. soil because it was such an antiquated design by the time the CJ-750 was being produced by the millions, and Americans wanted the latest styling & modern performance so they were never imported here as new machines. I've learned SO much from the 3 of these bikes I've now owned (cite history-lesson above), and never had a problem finding anything I needed for them. This motorcycle is all original, & it’s a complete bike. As I mentioned above, the engine is a 750cc horizontally-opposed Flathead 2-cylinder 4-stroke with the original points & condenser distributor upgraded to electronic ignition. It has a 4 speed transmission with reverse! Heel-Toe foot-shift, or hand-lever “suicide shifter” on the side of the transmission (I have a linkage kit which attaches to the right side of the tank included with the bike to make it hand-shift if you like the nostalgia of that)! It has a High-speed rear end (goes 60mph). It’s pretty heavy (about 800 pounds with the sidecar plus then you add the weight of 1, 2 or 3 people on top of that), so it’s not a speed-demon (I have a rear-seat which is spring-loaded like the front one, and mounts to the rear fender). Some of the newer models of the CJ-750 have engines with overhead-valve style cylinder heads which can be interchanged, but aren’t as authentic to the original design, and are only slightly more powerful than the old flattie design. They also make the bike a lot wider, and the right jug must be notched if you want to run a sidecar with it. I really prefer the look of this flat-head design. This one features both kick start AND electric start, as well as a modern 12 volt charging system (modern upgrades for reliability). It has modern Mikuni style carbs. Both cylinder’s connecting rods are hinged on the same crankshaft journal (much like a Harley V-Twin), so the engine has a great sound to it. There’s Dual Exhaust, with way-cool fish-tail mufflers. It has very unique clutch & brake levers hinged from the outside. I have it legally titled, licensed & insured in my name as a 2003 Reconstructed Vehicle, and it was inspected by the Iowa D.O.T. to ensure it has front & rear brakes, working high & low beam headlight, turn signals & brake light, etc to be street-legal. The original VIN stamp matches the VIN number on the title. The sidecar headlight & taillight come on when the other lights are on as well, which is a neat touch! The bike fires right up on the first kick (see video above), runs very well and has no known mechanical issues. The carbs are PZ28s, recently cleaned and balanced. This is incredibly RARE, but there are actually NO leaks from the engine, transmission, or rear-end on this bike! All electrical accessories (lights, horn, starter) work properly. Odometer is in Kilometers, BUT you can buy decal-overlays which show both MPH and KPH online for cheap (I did this on the gauge of my last one of these bikes). This machine tracks straight down the road with the sidecar attached, which is easily removed and the bike can be run solo. In my opinion, the dirtier it gets, the better it looks (patina). I kept some pictures from the previous owner in Beverley Hills, California where this bike never saw anything but cobblestone streets and pavement, but mostly I like cruising it on winding, scenic, dirt river-roads (where you would normally never take a 2-wheeled bike). It's got a giant training-wheel off to the side making it incredibly stable. It cleans up beautifully, but just looks more authentic dusty... like it just came out of 75 year barn-storage. I hope you agree... otherwise, I apologize, and can have it polished up before it leaves. Upgrades A number of mechanical and electrical improvements for performance and reliability were made: · The original pistons and rings were replaced with aftermarket high performance 4-ring pistons which give a noticeable boost in power. · Installed a deep sump oil pan and oil pickup to help keep the engine cool. There is a temp gauge on the oil dipstick as it is important to monitor temp on these air-cooled bikes in hot weather. · Replaced the stock fuel lines with clear fuel lines and dual in-line filters. · Added brass fittings to the carbs to assist in synchronizing with a manometer. · Replaced the stock air cleaner with a smaller BMW-style filter unit, resulting in a less cluttered appearance and better engine breathing. · Upgraded the electrical system with solid-state electrics including a modern voltage regulator, rectifier board and starter solenoid. These parts are enclosed in a locked toolkit mounted to the side of the bike, resulting in far better reliability and a more vintage appearance than standard. I have a matching primered toolkit for the opposite side of the bike for symmetry, which could be painted black to match, and installed as well. Most noticeable when riding with the sidecar removed. · Installed a smaller high-power Yuasa battery in a custom battery box in the stock location, saving several pounds of weight. · Replaced the center stand with a side kick stand, making it easier to park the bike when running “solo” without the sidecar. · A seat-belt was installed in the sidecar. While I doubt it improves the safety of an adult passenger, it might help them feel secure... perhaps keep a child or a dog from exiting the ride during motion. My dog rides in the sidecar, and I even have a pair of goggles for her (they say "Doggles" on them). I can provide pictures upon request! I have a truck & trailer, so delivery is a possibility if within a reasonable driving distance, otherwise, we have had a good deal of success with Atlas Auto Shippers (888) 285-2706. Patricia can get you a quote right over the phone from Mason City, IA 50401. If you have any further questions, or would like to come take the bike for a test-ride, I can be reached afternoons & evenings at (641) 512-5229. Never in all the many, many vehicles I've owned have I ever had one generate so much attention. Everywhere I take this thing, people want to take pictures with it, and sit in the sidecar, etc. Just puts a smile on everyone's face like nothing else I've ever driven. A real Harley XA or BMW R-71 would cost more than my house. This clone will get you the same experience for thousands of dollars less, and 99% of people will be none-the-wiser. I've taken it to shows, and people absolutely go nuts over it. It is currently titled, registered, and insured, so test rides are welcome. I'm driving it daily, so a few more Kilometers may rack up on the odometer by the end of the auction. The weather is nice, but I had fun riding it in the snow as well at the end of winter. You could ride this bike year-round! Thanks for looking. Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

1969 year DNEPR with sidecar and reverse gearPROFESIONALY RESTORED POWERFUL MILITARY BIKE! HISTORY Everywhere you look, this bike screams 1939! Frame, sheet metal, wheels, handlebars, tractor seats, exhaust, 750cc engine, 4-speed transmission, the list goes on and on. The story of Ural&Dnepr begins late in 1939. A secret meeting was held in the Defense Ministry of the USSR. The matter under discussion, what model of motorcycles was going to be the most suitable for Soviet Armed Forces. Now despite the fact that planed was peacefully split between two dictators right after the Molotov/von Ribbentrop pact, the Soviet Union, to be more specific Joseph Stalin, know it would soon be going to war with Adolph Hitler, the ruthless dictator of the German Third Reich. Most recent historic research proves that Joseph Stalin being as much a ruthless dictator as Adolph Hitler himself, if not more, was planning on striking the Nazis first, Joseph Stalin ordered the military to prepare all areas of operation, including ground forces. During the same time period there was also, unknown to the majority of the world, tremendous growth in the Soviet Air Force that would enable the Soviet Army to strike the Nazis first with a devastating surprise attack. Having seen the effects of Blitzkrieg (lighting war) against Poland, upgrading of military vehicles was of dominant importance to Joseph Stalin. Official version reads, after long discussion the BMW R71 motorcycle was found the closest match to the specific requirements and five of these motorcycles were secretly acquired in Sweden. Everything about the bike was reverse engineering and in early 1941 the first trial samples of M-72 motorcycles were shown to Marshall Stalin and the decision was made to produce them. Unofficially, and a more likely story is that the BMW factory supplied the construction drawings and casting molds. Transfers in technology had taken place, as a result of the Molotov/Ribbentrop Pact, in support of their soviet friends in different areas. Soviet engineers toured the German aircraft factories and had brought back complete cannons as samples. The OPEL Kadett was given to the Soviets just prior to the war however, it commenced series production only toward the end of the war as the Moskvitch 400. In 1941, BMW began series production the R75, and did not resume production of the R71. After the WWII the Factory was further developed and in 1950 the 30,000th motorcycle was produced. Since then over 3.2 million motorcycles, mainly sidecar outfits have been produced. The history of the URAL had begun with the glory of helping to defeat the terror of Hitler's armies on the Russian and European battlefields. The URAL was built for the military only, up until the late 1950's when another plant in the Ukraine (Kiev Motorcycle Zavod - KMZ) took over that job with same model, but different name - DNEPR and the Irbit Motorcycle Zavod (IMZ) began to concentrate on making bikes for domestic consumption. Today both plants manufacture bikes for domestic as well as for military needs. For sale fully restored MOTORCYCLE DNPER of 1969y. with sidecar. It was restored in military USSR style. Bike after restoration past about 10 miles that check and regulated all systems. It comes with everything what you see on pics: ammo-boxes, shovel, muchine gun's mount, spire tire, antenna and BRAND NEW BATTERY. Sale and restoration of motorcycles DneprOur company have long been successfully engaged in the professional restoration of old motorcycles Dnepr (KMF). All equipment is complete restoration, worn parts are replaced with new ones, eliminating problems in the further operation of the motorcycle. The whole process of restorationis under the full control specialists. Trained and qualified staff and modern art equipment assures maximum similarity with the restored motorcycle released from the assembly line many years ago. The restoration process is very long and laborious. It begins with the delivery of a motorcycle shop in disassembly. Here, he fully understands, then all items are sorted by degree of wear and suitable for further use. Unsuitable details sent for scrap. The next phase of the restoration - restoration of worn parts. It begins with the welding. To further the process is very important to take a responsible approach to the sandblasted parts motorcycle, in which details of getting rid of old paint, rust and other visible contamination. The final stage of preparing the same parts is glass blasting processing. It is necessary to remove all the fine contaminants are not visible to the naked eye. Continues the process of restoration of parts of motorcycle Dnepr powder painting. This provides uniform and continuous application of the paint on the item, even in tight spaces. Coverage of paint on parts formed by Polymerization in a special chamber with a very high fever. Thus the paint melts and fills the pores of the coating, which is marked. This was originally built for Nicolas Cage, and was the actor's favorite bike of his collection. Unfortunately, his insurance severely restricted his off-screen riding, and this bike only has a total of 1232 klms (765 miles) on the odometer. It is practically a new bike! This beautiful machine is part of a wonderful collection of Superbikes. These bikes are owned by a friend who is 70 years young, and he has reluctantly decided to sell off some of them. He's not computer savvy, so he asked if I would list the bikes for him as a favor, and we decided to list them individually rather than listing all the bikes at one time. This bike was featured on RareSportBikesForSale / featured listing Nico Bakker (Google this to find the website). I don't think I'm allowed to post a link here. Here is an excerpt from the feature with special thanks to the Rare Sports Bikes team: When it comes to collectible machinery, it helps to have a rare and desirable model, or something from an exclusive manufacturer, or something with super low miles, or something that was once owned by someone famous. Or in this case, all of the above. This super rare, Nico Bakker Barracuda (with vaunted Suzuki TL1000 power) was built exclusively for Nicholas Cage. Yes, the one with Ghost Rider film creds to his name. Talk about one in a million, here is a bike that can tick all the right boxes on every level. Star power never hurts, although it is seldom the single driver behind a collectible. Rather, this Barracuda, designed and constructed by the true Dutch Master known as Nico Bakker, could be the only one of its kind imported into the United States. You want rare, I challenge you to find a more meaningful or significant opportunity than this. This bike was recently serviced and a new battery installed. It starts immediately and runs strong, with a wonderful exhaust note. This bike is close to mint condition and the cosmetics look extremely nice. I could not find any issues to note other than a few tiny blemishes that are too small to photograph. It is evident that this bike has led a very pampered life. Buyer will be extremely happy with this bike - no unwelcome surprises! The VIN number is actually "BAKKER 007" How cool is that? A fantastic piece of exotica for the rider, collector, or museum. Seller still has the California title in Nicolas Cage's name. I will be listing other classic and exotic machines as time allows. Good luck, and let's complete this transaction like gentlemen- Terms: The bike has been brought to my shop in Ventura, CA so it can be shown more easily, and I am happy to do this during the auction period. Ask all questions before you place a bid and I will do my best to get the answer for you. Serious buyers only please. Sold As-Is like any used vehicle with no warranty. I have described it to the best of my ability, and am not responsible for errors or omissions. If you win the auction, be prepared to pay a $500 nonrefundable immediate deposit and payment in full within 7 days. Bike can be safely stored for 2 weeks free of charge while waiting for transport. I can assist with getting transportation arranged, but I do not have quotes available. Buyer is responsible for all transport costs. Overseas buyers are welcome to bid. Article courtesy of Carole Nash / Insidebikes If you’ve never heard of Dutchman Nico Bakker, then take a glimpse at some of this man’s handiwork...Over the last two decades the Bakker specials have taken several manufacturers motorcycles into another dimension, in terms of speed, handling and styling. Delve into this section to learn more about the pure engineering genius of Mr Bakker and consider some of the more radical sportbike options. Six wins from six races in the 1999 Dutch BoT championship suggested Nico Bakker’s latest creation was, well, a winner. Jumping on and hitting the button, Roland Brown soon found out why, the Barracuda’s hooligan heart - a Suzy TL1000 V-twin - complemented by sleek, sexy styling and great handling. Oh yes, he found it quite fast too! Nico Bakker has been improving on Japanese bikes for years often by pushing the limits of chassis engineering. New ideas, lightweight materials, advanced technology... the Dutchman has used them all, from single-shock rear ends in the late Seventies, via aluminium frames before they became common, to various ingenious front suspension systems. Bakker’s latest bike, the TL1000-engined Barracuda V-twin, is one of his best yet. The Barracuda, named after the fast, fierce grey fish, is lean, light, great fun to ride, and has a great racing pedigree. But this is a Bakker bike with a difference. This time, words like innovative and advanced don’t really fit. Instead, Bakker has gone back to basics. The Barracuda, powered by the 996cc V-twin engine from Suzuki’s TL1000S, abandons the Japanese bike’s oval-section aluminium frame tubes in favour of good old round steel, and replaces the TL’s controversial separate rear spring and damper unit with a conventional vertical monoshock. Like many of Bakker’s bikes, the first Barracuda was built for the track. Six wins from six races so far in this season’s (1999) Dutch BoT championship for Bakker’s engineer/rider Jeroen Oudenman who had good but less spectacular results in the same series last year on a more standard TL makes a pretty good argument that simple is sometimes best. And now Bakker has begun producing a small series of near-identical roadgoing Barracudas. This bike might not be the most radical to come out of Bakker’s workshop amid the flat green fields of northern Holland, but it is definitely one of the sexiest. With its slanted twin headlights (sourced from Cagiva’s parts bin), sculpted full fairing, single seat and all-grey paintwork, the Barracuda looks lean, light and racy, with a hint of Honda VFR and a whole lot more aggression. Bakker’s engineering skill is clear from one glance at the frame, which bolts a ladder of steel tubes to a billet aluminium swing-arm pivot at each side. The steel tubes are hand-welded from 38mm diameter, aircraft-quality chrome-molybdenum. Bakker says his frame weighs no more than Suzuki’s TL-S trellis but is as rigid as the TL-R’s twin-spar aluminium frame, which is 7.5kg heavier. In contrast to the standard TL’s separate rear shock and damper unit, the Barracuda has a conventional rising-rate monoshock, not unlike the ones that Bakker pioneered on Yamaha TZ250 road-racers almost 30 years ago. ’Our system is lighter, and easier to set up in conjunction with the suspension companies,’ he says. ’When something is good, why change it? Suzuki has two systems instead of one. It’s not necessary to be so complicated.’ Bakker added 10mm to the length of his bike’s aluminium swing-arm, bringing the wheelbase to 1425mm, to help keep the front wheel on the ground. He added a little trail by reducing fork offset by 1mm (the lighter racebike has even more trail, to increase stability further), and retained the Suzuki’s 23.7-degree fork angle. ’Weight distribution is 51 per cent on the front, a little bit more than normal, because of the swing-arm, and we can also adjust the swing-arm pivot to keep the front wheel down.’ The roadgoing Barracuda will come with either an Ohlins or WP shock unit (to customer choice). This prototype compromised by having a WP body with an Ohlins spring, as part of Bakker’s development process. Front forks are the standard TL’s 43mm upside-down units revalved with WP internals, although customers can pay more for a complete WP or Ohlins front end if they prefer. Wheels are five-spoke Marvics, slightly lighter than standard. The front brake system combines the standard four-pot calipers with Brembo discs. Even the all-conquering racing Barracuda incorporates very little engine tuning: just slightly more compression and new cams, plus carburettors instead of fuel-injection, as demanded by Dutch BoT rules. So it’s no surprise that the roadgoing version is powered by a completely standard TL-S powerplant, with fuel-injection retained. The only modification is an Akrapovic exhaust, which increases power by a few horses to 126bhp at the rear wheel. This prototype wore just a pair of the Slovenian firm’s end-cans, as the full Akrapovic system with which production machines will be fitted hadn’t arrived in time for my test. The Barracuda still sounded the business, though, when I threw a leg over the fairly low single seat and hit the button. This bike was designed for lanky Dutchmen, and unlike the standard TL-S its screen wasn’t cut so low that it obscured the retained Suzuki instruments when I leant forward to the fairly low clip-ons. One thing was very familiar, though, as I pulled away: despite Bakker’s efforts to tame it with his chassis layout, the torquey Suzuki V-twin motor was still just as much of a hooligan as ever. Okay, so the Barracuda is slightly longer and fractionally more front-heavy than the standard TL-S. But the Dutch-built special is also 10kg lighter at 177kg dry. Simply winding on the throttle in first gear was enough to send the front Marvic inadvertently lifting off the ground as the eight-valve V-twin’s midrange torque came thundering in. Doubtless the Bakker bike’s reduced weight and few extra horses gave it a tiny edge over the standard TL Thou in a straight line, but I couldn’t really tell. The Akrapovic cans certainly hadn’t marred the Suzuki V-twin’s delicious midrange response, and this bike ran very cleanly and reliably at low revs, which isn’t true of all TLs. And when I found a straight bit of road, crouched behind the tinted screen and wound open the throttle, the Barracuda was every bit as rapid as you’d expect. It stormed to over 150mph with plenty of speed to come, that delicious 8000rpm-plus rush of power very much in place. High-speed stability was excellent, best illustrated by the rapid way the bike recovered after a couple of not-too-scary handlebar flaps when I went over a slightly raised strip of road spanning a small canal, at over a ton. But my first impressions of the chassis had earlier been surprisingly mixed. At slow speed, even with the WP steering damper on its lowest setting, the Barracuda swayed very gently from side to side, to much less a degree but in similar fashion to the way the TL1000S does when wearing its over-stiff factory-fitted damper. Once out of town and up to speed, though, that feeling was immediately forgotten and the Barracuda showed why it has been so successful on the track. The front wheel might have been keen to get some airtime in the lowest gears, but at higher speeds, when powering out of corners with that mighty midrange kicking in, the Dutch bike felt superbly well planted when the standard machine would just possibly have been giving the odd twitch. Holland is so flat that most roads are too straight to be much fun, but ex-racer Bakker knows where a few good bends are to be found. Cranking the Barracuda hard into one particular long, smooth second-gear right-hander showed the bike at its best, as it could be flicked effortlessly and fast into the turn, felt superbly planted and stable as I carved through, and then catapulted out onto the next straight without any bar-wiggling drama. Chassis details were sorted with the efficiency that’s to be expected of Bakker, whose customers over the years have ranged from Dutch GP heroes Wil Hartog and Boet van Dulmen to firms including BMW and Laverda. There was masses of ground clearance, even given the huge grip of the Michelin Pilot rubber, the rear of which was a 180/55-section tyre instead of the standard TL’s 190. In fast bends and slow, the whole bike gave such a feeling of control that I could easily understand why the racing version, 20kg lighter and wearing slicks, has been so dominant on the track. Occasionally the Barracuda’s racing background worked against it, as its suspension was a bit firm for bumpier bits of road. There’s plenty of potential for reducing preload and compression damping if necessary, but most roads were smooth enough that it didn’t matter. My only slight cornering concern was that, when hanging off the bike, my oversize feet felt as though they might slip off the custom-made, adjustable pegs, though in reality it wasn’t a problem. The extra stopping power provided by the change of discs was very welcome, too. The standard TL-S’s front brake is nothing special, and Bakker considered substituting its four-pot Tokico calipers with the TL-R’s superior six-potters. Instead he replaced the rotors with Brembo rotors in the same 320mm diameter, which gave a big increase in the stopper’s bite with no loss of feel at the lever. Testing exotic bikes like this comes with the big drawback that you have to give them back at the end of the day, and this was particularly tough with the Barracuda. As a satisfied TL1000S owner I reckon the much-maligned standard Suzuki is a blinding bike, with distinctive looks, torquey and characterful engine, light weight and quirky but generally effective chassis. The Barracuda, by comparison, is sleeker and much more distinctive, fractionally more torquey and just as full of character. It’s also lighter, and handles and stops better. The hand-built Bakker bike is also inevitably a lot more expensive than the mass-produced Suzuki. But if you like the TL Thou, you’ll love the Bakker Barracuda. 1956 year M-72 w/ SIDECAR ( MILITARY USSR STYLE)PROFESIONALY RESTORED POWERFUL MILITARY BIKE! GERMAN STYLE HISTORY Everywhere you look, this bike screams 1939! You are looking excellent Motorcycle M-72 of 1956y with sidecar. "The BMW R 69 S VIN 658506 was manufactured on February 10th, 1964 and delivered on February 14th, 1964 to the BMW importer Butler & Smith in New York City. The bike was equipped with a bench seat." The BMW R69S, produced from 1960 to 1969, was BMW’s sport bike of its day. With 42 horsepower, it was by far the most powerful bike BMW made at the time. You had to pay to play ($1,564 in 1966), but that extra money bought you one of the most prestigious motorcycles available in the day. This is one of my favorite motorcycles of the 1960’s. But I’ll leave the explanation of why that is to Cycle World, who put it best in a 1962 review: "Whatever the BMW’s merits in a contest of speed, it is still the smoothest, best finished, quietest and cleanest motorcycle it has ever been our pleasure to ride. To be honest, we think that anyone who would worry much over its performance-potential is a bit of a booby. The R69S is fast enough to handle any encounter, and it has attributes that are, in touring, infinitely more valuable than mere speed. All things considered, if we were planning a two-wheel style vacation/tour, the BMW would have to be our choice of mount." IF AN OFFER IS SUBMITTED AND ACCEPTED THE BUYER WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR SHIPPING CHARGES BUT WE WILL HELP YOU WITH THE SHIPPING CHORES. FOR SALE A 1967 BMW R60/2. It is a very nice and all serviced up bike. I have notes of the service work that have been performed by the previous owner in 03/1993 and only 500 miles ago. See the last pic for extensive maintenance record. "The BMW R 60/2 VIN 1812208 was manufactured on December 15th, 1966 and delivered on December 16th, 1966 to the BMW importer Butler & Smith in New York City. The bike was equipped with a bench seat." Bike was sold originally in 1967 hence it was titled as 1967 and that was a common practice back in the days. Matching frame, engine, tag and title numbers. It is a very honest bike, one of the nicest riding and looking pre-1970 BMW bikes I have had in my collection. It is all original bike w/o any mods. This bike has been stored in various conditions in its life and it shows. It is quite clean machine, not perfect but a great every day runner. The motor has had a recent top end disassembled, inspected, one helicoil professionally installed at the machine shop for the right side spark plug. New rings were installed, new top end gaskets and seals, torqued back to factory specs. Valves and timing was set, carbs re-adjusted. DESCRIPTION OF AUCTION ITEM: THIS IS A 2013 BMW K 1600 GTL. THIS BIKE IS PERFECT EVERYWHERE AND WAS TRADED IN BY A GUY FROM OUR LOCAL AIR FORCE BASE. THIS BIKE HAS NO SCRATCHES AND IS PERFECT EVERYWHERE YOU LLOK ON IT. THIS IS NO DIFFERENT THAN BUYING A BIKE OFF THE SHOWRROM FLOOR EXCPET ITS ALOT CHEAPER. THE TIRES ARE PERFECT, IT DOES HAVE ABS AND NAV AND ALL BAGS WORK PERFECT AND IT RUNS OUT LIKE A DREAM BELOW ARE SOME SPECIFICATIONS ON THIS BIKE. The BMW K1600GTL is a luxury mega-tourer. It falls into that category of bikes that has next to zero relevance to me at this point in my riding life cycle, as I've got no current plans to circumnavigate Australia or have a crack at the Saddlesore 1000. And yet I've actually been hanging out to get my hands on one of these things, because it features what I'd call the single coolest innovation I've seen on a motorcycle since I first put aside my prejudices and felt just how good the Piaggio MP3 tilting 3-wheeler is to ride. It's the second coolest thing I've thrown a leg over this week. We'll get to the headlight later. To start with, the GTL is a bit of a beast when it comes to basic specs. It starts with a 1649cc, inline 6-cylinder engine block that by all rights should make the bike a barrel-chested brute of a thing like Honda's old CBX. Except that it doesn't. Despite more than a whole supersport bike's worth of extra engine capacity, the K1600 engine barely makes itself noticed poking out of the fairings. You'd easily mistake it for a K1300 4-cylinder job if it didn't have a big chrome 6 on it, and BMW tout it as the lightest and narrowest 6-cylinder engine ever mass produced for a liter-plus motorbike. Tilted forward at a slightly odd-looking 50 degrees, the motor produces a healthy 158 horsepower and a stonking 175 newton-meters of torque, while revving out to around 8500 rpm. That's more than enough to make light work of the GTL's 348 kg wet weight – pulling power simply never feels like an issue and I'd happily hook up a caravan if I couldn't already make camp in the huge luggage allotment. K1600GT vs K1600GTL The GTL is the luxury upgrade to the K1600GT. As such it features slightly altered ergonomics for a more upright riding stance, and a standard top-box with built in passenger backrest. I didn't personally get along so well with the seating position, I found it made me slump a bit – but that's very much a personal thing. For reference, I'm a shade under 6 foot and weigh around 110 kg. None of the passengers I took out on the GTL had any complaints whatsoever. They're looked after with a big wide seat, nice chunky footrests and that most effective of selling points, the sturdy, reliable backrest. The luggage is enormous and spacious. Each of the removable side panniers will fit an XL helmet with room to spare, and you can fit two more lids in the top box. The top box is also removable, although you have to rummage around underneath all your stuff to get to the latch. There's also another two small compartments in the side fairings big enough for phones, wallets and the like – one of them has a built-in USB charger with an iPhone connection. Each of the luggage compartments opens at the touch of a button, and since there's so many, BMW has endowed the K1600GTL with central locking off the key fob so you can lock and unlock them all at once. Audio system The GTL also comes with a standard audio system (pretty much every extra on the GTL bar the ergonomics are options on the GT) that's nicely integrated into the bike's multi-control menu and operable off a toggle and scroll wheel on the left handlebar that's quite nice to use once you get the hang of it. The stereo on our test bike came pre-set on our local hits and memories station – and that felt pretty much spot on, so that's where it stayed. The audio system shares is also integrated with the in-dash, touch screen GPS, and can also plug into an iPhone or other USB audio player, complete with the ability to choose tracks directly through the dashboard menu. And if that wasn't enough, the whole thing is Bluetooth enabled so that if your tunes are lost in the wind noise of freeway riding, you can pipe them straight into your Bluetooth helmet. Bodacious. I'm not usually the kind of rider that likes listening to music as I go, but I thought I'd give it a go. The stereo adjusts its volume to account for wind noise as you speed up, and it sounds great around town. But at freeways speeds it gets pretty difficult to hear through a full face lid. And it's also easy to forget you're on a motorbike – I pulled up and parked outside a university campus at one point and wondered why everyone was staring at me … it took a minute to remember that it's not normal for motorcycles to blast "Money for Nothing" at ear-splitting volumes. Whoops. Other gadgetry BMW makes a good argument for consideration as the most technology-forward motorcycle company in the world. And the K1600GTL is more or less its technology flagship. So here's a quick rundown of some other gadgets it features that you wouldn't ordinarily find on your motorcycle: Fully electronic cruise control – I can't stress enough how lovely it is to have a good cruise system on a bike. You can rest your wrists on the highway, or just use it to keep yourself under your local area's idiot-friendly speed limits. Electronically operated suspension – this makes quite a noticeable difference. Set on "comfort" you can enjoy a nice soft ride that cushions the bumps on a highway very nicely but decks out the centerstand fairly early if you try to ride it hard. Pop it on sport, and the whole thing firms itself up to let you turn much more aggressively in the twisties. Tyre pressure warning system – over the years I've developed the ability to tell when my bikes are maybe 4-5psi down on tire pressure. This system takes away the need. Electrically adjustable touring screen – honestly, this is one of the most annoying features of this bike for me. I don't like screens much at the best of times, but the GTL's is a shocker. You have to drop it all the way down if you want to see the road surface in front of you clearly, but when you do, it forces a lumpy stream of buffeting wind right at your helmet. Raise it up higher and the buffeting wind disappears, but you have to look at the road through a curved bit of perspex, and it also creates a slight negative air pressure hole that draws your upper body forward at freeway speeds. There's probably an aftermarket fix out there but I spent a lot of time fiddling with the switch that I could have spent concentrating on other stuff. Switchable engine mappings, ABS and traction control – almost not worth a mention given how common these features are becoming on modern motorcycles, but all three systems work well here. Unfortunately it's a bit of a slog to go and turn off the traction control if you want to chuck a wheelie – but that's probably for the best. The ride You've doubtless read a tonne of other megatourer reviews that praise the way these behemoths handle once they're moving – and this is a fantastic example. At 348 kg (767 lbs), there's no getting around the fact that the GTL is a handful to push around. You'd better think about where you park it, and if you end up nosed into a downhill parking spot, you may well need help to get the big bugger out. Slip the clutch and get it moving though, and from walking pace upward the big K handles beautifully. At low speeds it's responsive and maneuverable enough to do figure-8s on, or dodge around blockages while you're lane-splitting in stopped traffic. Credit for the K1600GTL's superb steering has to go at least partially to Norman Hassock – BMW basically out-waited the patent life of the Hossack front end suspension system and re-branded it as "Duolever." It works superbly to deliver pinpoint-sharp steering at all speeds, to eliminate front-end dive under braking and maintain constant steering geometry under all conditions. Riding the GTL hard in the twisties, you're certainly aware you're on a weighty bike – particularly when you have to pull up hard from high speed for a corner entry. But the big ABS brakes are up for the job, and the bike's steering is light as a feather at all times, so it's actually a pleasure to play, even if its performance envelope is well down on sportier machines. Firing it out of turns is also quite a pleasure thanks to the surprisingly loud and throaty engine roar that develops when you wind the K1600 up – and there's muscle aplenty to trouble the traction control as you do. I will note that the GTL suffers a little from what I'd term overapplication of the luxury brush. I don't like it in cars either – there's a big difference between the immediacy and responsiveness and instant feedback of a sportscar, and the soft, neutered, unmechanical feel through the pedal of some luxury cars. In the K1600GTL, this manifests as a vagueness through the clutch lever that makes it difficult to find the clutch point, and a weird sense of disconnection between the throttle and the engine. It might add a touch of "class" to the feel of the ride, but I didn't appreciate stalling this giant thing more than a dozen times, often in embarrassing places. And I'm not a bloke that normally stalls bikes. The Headlights And now, with all that riding around rubbish out of the way, we get to the best bit. The K1600 series is the first in the world to feature an optional adaptive headlight that freakin' looks around the corners when you tip in. Here's the problem – headlights are designed to illuminate as much of the road in front of you as possible, but without shining directly in the eyes of other road users coming the other way. So they cut off with a horizontal line. Of course, when you lean a motorbike into a turn, that horizon line tilts with the bike, putting the side that you're turning towards downward and basically ensuring that you can't see where you're going: SHIPPING FREE SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE LOWER CONTIGUOUS 48 STATES. The name comes from the Osborn Engineering Company of Portsmouth where Frederick Osborn built motorcycles before the First World War. His son resumed production in 1920 and with Fred Wood introduced duplex steering to racing motorcycles for the TT race in 1927. The firm kept going until 1954, latterly mainly producing speedway motorcycles. The Osborn Engineering Company was very active in designing and building special frames for racing and record breaking machines. A famous design was also the duplex-steering spring-chassis, an invention of John Osborn. It was introduced as a new standard in two wheel stability in 1927. The duplex forks gave both a unique but superior steering capability and road holding quality. The World Speed Record was taken briefly by a duplex-steering OEC fitted with a supercharged 1000 cc JAP V-twin. Top speed was 137.32 miles per hour! This bike is in excellent overall condition. It can be seen started and running on YouTube: www.sinlesscycles dot com
