1978, everything works. runs well, 11,000 miles. Easy restoration or daily rider. These have some collector status and replacements are abundant.I took this bike on a trade knowing nothing about them. It is kick-only, there-in lies the problem. With my feet and knees being what they are, I simply cannot get it started consistently, thereby making it of no use as a daily rider to me. Was recently serviced, oil change etc. Runs very well and everything works. Want to trade for another UJM daily-rider machine that will make it through DMV with no issues. I have a Clymer manual and title in hand for the SR. What do you have??

Up for sale is my excellent 1978 Yamaha SR500. I've absolutely loved owning and riding this bike, however I'm moving to the mountains in Utah and it won't get the attention it deserves. It has always been garaged and has less than 16,000 miles on it (I have put 1,500 miles on it since I purchased it 2 years ago) and has less than 20 miles since its last service.Here is a video of a walk around: s://youtu.be/oFYYhUo6o3UThe title is clear, the registration is paid through April 2017 and it comes with the custom vanity plate "SEVNT8". I have never had any issues with it and everything runs absolutely great. I just installed a brand new Seat and super bright LED taillight and it comes with the old fender and light as well as 2 extra rear fenders. I'm happy to show it to locals or upload any additional pics or videos upon request. Disclaimer: There are no turn signals or horn installed, however the wiring is there. Just picked it up from its oil change/service. Everything checks out great! Just got a new valve cover gasket, fuel ratio is perfect, turns over with first kick (maybe 2 if its sat for over a week), and has a new Shorai LFX09L2-BS12 Extreme Rate Lithium Iron Battery so you never have to worry about a dead battery or the maintenance required of the old liquid batteries.

This is a 1978 Yamaha SR500. It is mostly stock but stripped down a bit with plastic side covers removed and the seat very slightly modified for simplicity. It has been kept covered with a vinyl cover and under a carport for the past few years when I have not been riding it. THE GOOD: It starts and runs every time and I have been riding it regularly for a the past few years. Everything works as it should (lights, signals, breaks, etc.) and the bike runs and responds well. It is an absolute joy to ride. It has torque for days - good compression. THE BAD: Well, its an old bike and it smokes when it starts and fouls out the spark-plug on occasion. I'm not much of a mechanic but I have friends that have helped me out. It could use a tune up I'm sure. There is a leak in the exhaust manifold near the engine so it smokes up there when it first starts up after a few days off. Years ago, there was a leak in the engine case but it was professionally repaired with an aluminum patch and there has not been a problem since. Apparently this problem was common and the standard way of fixing then has been more a robust condition than the original state. THE UGLY: Look at it. I think it's beautiful but we all have different tastes. The tank has been rattle canned flat white and none of the side covers are on the bike. It's dusty but not too terribly dirty. Paint on the engine and wheels are chipping. There is rust in places but nothing is weakened or compromised. The seat has been recovered/reconditioned and the plastic part on the back has been painted white. The center stand broke at some point and I had it welded together with some reinforcement. That is stronger than before. It's just not a shiny bike. It reminds me of a well used hammer. It's a cool kind of ugly to me but there is no accounting for my taste, I'm sure. I have some extra parts (headlight bucket and blinker arms, the side covers -- I think, and some other stuff that you are welcome to have) Email me with any questions and I'll answer them to the best of my ability (and to my own amusement). Below, there is a video of me starting the bike after it had been sitting a week. It's a thumper so it tries to scoot away from me while its on its center stand. There are dog toys in the background of the pictures and I've not mowed my back yard in a bit. Don't judge!!! I can help deliver the bike within 200 miles at $0.75 a mile - otherwise you're on your own.
