Nicely restored, and meticulously maintained 1963 Honda CB77 Superhawk Engine #: CB77E 212347 Frame #: CB77 22276 Soichiro Honda will go down in history as the man who truly changed the face of motorcycling forever. Honda founded his enterprise in 1947, using war-surplus Tohatsu generator motors clipped to bicycles. After his supply of engines dried up, he designed his own 50cc two-stroke clip-on motor, the first Honda Cub. Sales boomed, but Honda wanted more, and in 1954 he made the unheard-of plan of visiting Europe and learning as much as he could, directly from the best motorcycle factories in the world. He met with Triumph’s Edward Turner, who was impressed by Honda, but could not see beyond his own legendary ego that the man before him would, within 15 years, come to ruin his home industry! ? Honda visited the Isle of Man to see the TT races, and spoke with helpful emissaries at the NSU, Horex, and DAF factories. Realizing that fine production tolerances could only be achieved using European and American tooling, Honda was granted enormous government grants and bank loans to create two state-of-the-art factories, at Hamamatsu and Saitama. He had deeply studied the world’s best lightweight racing motorcycles – the all-conquering NSU Rennfox and Rennmax, and taken them as his template for a new series of production motorcycles. The result was the C70 Dream model of 1956, whose engine profile would be instantly familiar to any motorcyclist awake in the 1960s; it had a single overhead-cam parallel twin-cylinder motor with all-aluminum construction, fine pitch finning, and a slight forward cant to the cylinders. The frame was light and strong, made from welded steel pressings. Honda had taken the Rennmax and brought it to the street; no other manufacturer in 1956 could boast of such a sophisticated and affordable package, and within a year it boasted an electric starter as well. ? In 1959 the next iteration of the Dream line arrived, this time a super-sports machine, the CB72 Hawk. Gone was the gawky Teutonic styling of the Dream, replaced by clean lines which promised great speed – and the bike didn’t disappoint. With a 10,000rpm rev limit and top speed around 90mph, the Hawk was an instant hit. In 1961 an added 45cc was found, and a true Middleweight arrived, the 305cc CB77 Superhawk. With 28.5hp and 95mph top speed, plus utter reliability and sound handling, Honda had arrived, and the world took notice. ? The factory offered a comprehensive list of racing items to bring the Superhawk onto the track, including a bump-stop seat, special carb bellmouths, special rearsets, megaphone exhaust, etc. This 1966 CB77 has the ‘race kit’ installed, and was fully restored several years ago, with minimal mileage since. As the ‘race kit’ is now unavailable from Honda, this machine represents a rare opportunity to own a historic machine with the every one of the desirable ‘goodies’ from the 1963 Honda Racing catalogue, including the megaphone exhaust, solo seat, aluminium rear fender and number plates, clip-on handlebars, and high compression pistons and high lift cam ? The bike is offered in excellent condition throughout, both mechanically and cosmetically. The engine is strong and taut and has great power. It shifts perfectly through an excellent clutch. Brakes, suspension and all cycle parts are in excellent working order including the GT750 front brake. ? The blue frame is just about perfect and the finish on the rest of the bike is as exquisite. The bike was restored some years ago, but it has held up well – testament to the meticulous care taken in maintenance and storage since. ? The previous owner started to work on the engine and had the carburetors serviced. It is remembered today as Honda's first sportbike. It is a landmark model in Honda's advances in Western motorcycle markets of the 1960s, for its speed and power as well as its reliability, and is regarded as one of the bikes that set the paradigm for modern motorcycles. The CB77 had, at only 305cc, a relatively big engine in comparison to most other Japanese bikes of the period, although it had performance to rival much larger motorcycles from other countries. It quickly built a reputation for reliability, and was equipped with luxuries such as an electric starter. The CB77 was built on the experience Honda had gained in Grand Prix racing, and differed greatly from previous models.It had a steel-tube frame instead of the pressed frames of earlier Hondas, and a telescopic front fork. The parallel twin engine (the biggest then available in a Honda) was an integral element of the bike's structure, providing stiffness in a frame that had no downtube, and was capable of 9,000 rpm. It could propel the bike at over 100 mph; as fast as British parallel twins with higher displacements, and with great reliability. It is now regarded as 'the first modern Japanese motorcycle...that established the motorcycle paradigm that we still operate under now, more than forty years later. 1964 Honda Superhawk , I won't give a history lesson on the significance of the CB77, but if you don't know it's past I encourage you to check it out. This is one of the first models Honda imported into the U.S. and an early front runner for their racing program. You also may have heard about a little story book which featured one of these trusty bikes, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I bought this bike a few years back as a basket case from a gentleman in Indiana. The bike had not seen the road since 1969, and the odometer is correct. I brought the bike home and did a complete teardown on it, every nut and bolt. Using factory parts & service manuals I went through and noted all parts that needed replaced/repaired. The bike has now been rebuilt, repainted, rechromed, or replaced from front to back. There isn't a part on the bike that hasn't had some type of work done to it. Some of the highlights are: Powder coated frame, swingarm, kickstand (rare option), center stand, fork legs, Total engine rebuild including .010 over bore and Wiseco pistons, New Avon Roadrider tires, New seat, BRAND NEW nos mufflers ($1000), Updated voltage regulator, All sheetmetal stripped and painted, New stainless spokes and replated factory rims, Correct plastic badges (not metal repops). I finished the bike, rode it a few times, and then started another project. As it goes with old bikes, it wasn't long before the carbs were gummed up and the battery was dead. I moved the bike into my kitchen where it provided me with much viewing pleasure over the next few years. I wanted to get the bike rideable again but have been very busy lately, so I took it to a buddies shop to get it squared away. He rebuilt the carbs, replaced the battery, stripped the inside of the tank and coated it with Caswell gas tank sealer. Now the bike starts right up and runs like a dream. I have a ton of extras to go with the bike, including: frame, engine (seized but rebuildable), original stainless steel mufflers (a little beat up but not too bad), 2 sets of forks (1 aluminum tubes, 1 steel tubes), set of wheel hubs, stock seat (needs redone), 2 fenders (1 front, 1 rear), misc engine/bike parts, literature used in restoration. Bike does have a few minor cosmetic flaws but nothing major. I think it looks a little better in person but you judge for yourself the quality of this bike from the pictures. This truly is a beautiful machine. I put alot of love into restoring this gem, and have enjoyed its company very much, but now its time for me to allow it to go to a new home. One note, the original title has been lost to time. Most states won't re-issue titles for bikes this old & don't require them for registration. Up for sale is my 1967 Honda CL77 Scrambler 300 with the legendary 305 twin cylinder engine.This bike was and is beyond cool. It bleeds nostalgia. It was the dual sport version of the CB and featured a stronger frame with higher ground clearance and upswept dual exhaust. It was clad with knobby tires and long travel suspension. This bike conjures up images of James Dean and Elvis Presley; and the naked girl riding in circles around Kowalski in the movie Vanishing Point.This is a survivor bike in very good operating and cosmetic condition. It has less than 8400 original miles. It is complete and and it starts right up, shifts smooth and stops as it should. It has had a recent tune up including carb service, new air filters and intake boots, spark plugs and oil service. The front shocks were overhauled and resealed. The tank was cleaned and resealed. It has brand new tires (not shown in these photos). There is a little surface rust on the rear chrome fender and on the lower handlebar but nothing to apologize for on this great riding bike. Vintage bikes are commanding lots of attention and the 305 Scramblers are as hot as they come.I am the third owner. The original owner's California title was lost and was subsequently sold on bills of sale. Title searches in California and Texas came up clean. The pictures tell the rest of the story. I have a very nice example of a 1973 TX650 (XS650) cafe racer for sale with 14,700 original miles. I put a lot of work and money into this bike over the summer, and she is running like a champ.
