BIGGER IS BETTER (back Ground) The MOV was doing so well that a larger version was needed & by lengthening the stroke, they created the 350cc Velocette MAC in 1934. It became the real bread winner for Velocette Motorcycles, their best-selling model. The much-needed capital was invested in an entirely new design, a big 500cc OHV single sport version to be called the MSS in 1935. This utilized an all-new frame, developed from the MkV KTT race machines & shared this frame with the KSS MkII, 1936-48. The MSS was another runaway hit for Velocette Motorcycles. World War II halted production which did not resume until much later. The 1935 MSS was a much more modern machine with the same frame as the Velocette MAC and was fitted with sidecar lugs and had optional panniers to appeal to the touring market. Buyers started tuning the MSS for speed, however, and the factory responded by producing the sports Velocette Venom model. Burt Monro from New Zealand, featured in the film "The World’s Fastest Indian" chose a 1936 MSS 500cc raced a heavily modified Velocette MSS. Racing preparations including making special pistons, changing the frame and increasing bored out engine capacity to 650cc. His top speed record on this motorcycle was 138 mph. with a 1/4 mile time of 12.31 seconds. This fine example is reported to be an excellent runner and fun to ride. This is the first of the swing arm frame models. This bike is in very nice tidy condition and looks good from every angle. This bike is fitted with the optional Wellworthy Alfin alloy cylinder barrel, which is a nice addition and looks great. This motorcycle is entered for sale under 'BSA' as there is no Velocette section and these great British motorcycles get lost in all the dross advertised in "Other Makes" amidst the others etc. The bike runs and rides well and is ready to go. Will help all I can with Safe Shipping. Utah title. From 1948 Velocette turned their attention to building the LE and discontinued the MSS, but a re-worked 500 returned in 1954 with all the mods cons of the time. The light-alloy engine now used square dimensions of 86mm bore and stroke, and featured hairpin valve springs and a bonded-in iron cylinder liner. Its output of just 25bhp sounds modest, but the MSS made the most of Velocette's excellent sprung frame which Cyril Ayton once described as 'virtually faultless'. Velocette's own telescopic front forks provided superb steering with fully-adjustable rear suspension provided by Woodhead-Monroe springs. Many a rider on a 650 parallel twin was startled to find a 500 single keeping pace on A-roads, and on twisting B-roads the MSS would have the measure of Turner's flexi-frames of the 1950s and early 60s. So Velo's MSS was an easy starting, tractable and good natured all-rounder which weighed in a 385lb, capable of cruising at 70mph with shorts bursts of speed up to a little over 80. The MSS looked smart, too, in gleaming black and gold, with its fishtail silencer and slightly stepped dual saddle. Although Velocette were never a mass manufacturer as such, the MSS stayed in production in this guise until 1971.

The name comes from the Osborn Engineering Company of Portsmouth where Frederick Osborn built motorcycles before the First World War. His son resumed production in 1920 and with Fred Wood introduced duplex steering to racing motorcycles for the TT race in 1927. The firm kept going until 1954, latterly mainly producing speedway motorcycles. The Osborn Engineering Company was very active in designing and building special frames for racing and record breaking machines. A famous design was also the duplex-steering spring-chassis, an invention of John Osborn. It was introduced as a new standard in two wheel stability in 1927. The duplex forks gave both a unique but superior steering capability and road holding quality. The World Speed Record was taken briefly by a duplex-steering OEC fitted with a supercharged 1000 cc JAP V-twin. Top speed was 137.32 miles per hour! This bike is in excellent overall condition. It can be seen started and running on YouTube: www.sinlesscycles dot com
